Save the Date! – Race for Education — Friday, Oct. 29

Are you interested in helping Atlantic Christian School raise $40,000 in order to continue to provide a quality education and affordable tuition?

Would you be willing to give a minimal amount of time to help our school raise needed funds?

Parents, guardians, and students from PreK3 to the 12th grade will soon have the opportunity to get involved in our exciting fall fundraiser — the Race for Education.  A Race “Kick-Off” packet with all the information about how to get involved in the fundraiser will be sent to parents and guardians the week of September 20.  Last year’s goal was to raise $30,000 and this year, we have set our goal higher — to reach or exceed $40,000.  With so many new students and families this year, we are confident that we will reach our goal.  A special Race website that will enable family and friends to donate online will soon be ready to launch.

Here are some facts about this year’s Race:

  • Our Race for Education is a jog-a-thon, which will involve our PreK3-12th grade students walking and/or jogging around the school track for 30 minutes.
  • Our Race for Education will be held on Friday, October 29, 2021.
  • The success of our Race for Education is based on sharing your child’s personal fundraising webpage address with potential sponsors by EMAIL, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or by sending individuals a sponsor mailer.
  • Potential sponsors may be family members, relatives, close friends, and neighbors. Don’t forget to include relatives and friends that live out of town and may not normally be able to contribute to other school fundraising efforts. Our Race for Education makes it easy for them to participate as well!
  • There are student and classroom incentives and prizes to help promote the success of our Race, including Snack Passes, Dress Down Day Cards, “Five Below” Gift Cards, and Class Outings).
  • Our Race for Education is great fun for our students, no hassle to parents, and will fully benefit our school’s educational program!

Soccer News — Varsity Teams Off to a Winning Start; Middle School Tryouts Rescheduled to Monday, Sept. 13

Congratulations to our Varsity Soccer teams for both chalking up a win on Friday, September 10 in a non-league game at home against Veritas Christian Academy from Sparta, NJ. The Varsity Boys won 5-1 and the Varsity Girls won 5-3.  We’re excited to see these teams continue to grow and get stronger as they begin conference play next week against Pilgrim Academy and Gloucester County Christian School. Tryouts for our Middle School Soccer Teams will be on Monday, September 13. The tryouts were rescheduled from September 9 due to rain.  Come out, bring your cleats and a water bottle, and be part of a great program that focuses on building skills, confidence, and good sportsmanship.

In the Varsity Boys’ game on Friday, three players led the team on offense — 12th grader Aaron Glancey, who scored two goals, 10th grader Manny Johnson, who also scored two goals, and 9th grader Chase Leach, who scored one. Working on defense in the goal were 11th grader Jacob DeNick and 10th grader Nathan Mills. The 24-member Boys’ team is under head coach Andres Tortola, joined by assistant coach and ACS alumnus, Tommy Tillis (’10).

In the Varsity Girls’ game, five players shared the stage on offense, each scoring one goal — Sophia Johnson (9th), Rebecca Kelley (10th), Reyna Lewis (11th), and sisters Eden and Eve Wilson (11th).  9th grader Taylor Sutton had five saves in goal. The 14-member Varsity Girls’ team is coached by ACS alumnus Carly Witherow (’08). Since 2015, Coach Carly has led the Lady Cougars to six consecutive appearances in the Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference (TSCAC) Tournament finals and five consecutive TSCAC Championships.

Both Varsity teams will face off next week in their first TSCAC conference games of the season — on Thursday, September 16 away at Pilgrim Academy and on Friday, September 17 at home against Gloucester County Christian School.  Come on out and cheer for our teams. Go Cougars!

Parents in Prayer Group to Meet Weekly on Tuesday Mornings — Starts Sept. 14

Impact your children’s lives and ACS through prayer. Be a part of the ACS Parents in Prayer Group that will meet throughout the school year on Tuesday mornings from 9:00-9:45 a.m. in the Extended Care annex trailer. The first prayer meeting will be Tuesday, September 14 and all parents and guardians are welcome to attend. Masks must be worn when indoors.

The goal of the prayer group is to ask God to move at every level of the school, to work in the hearts of our students and their families and in the lives of everyone connected to ACS. We will be praying that our young people will grow in their faith and that their lives will be transformed by God’s Word and the power of the Holy Spirit. We will be praying that our entire school community would live their lives devoted to one another in love, through Jesus, to the glory of God.

Fall Schedule of After-School Classes Coming Out Soon — Band Classes Start Week of Sept. 20

The fall schedule of After-School Classes will be coming out soon and there will be something for everyone. The first classes to be offered on the schedule — Beginning and Intermediate Band — will start the week of September 20.  There will also be STEAM-focused classes and classes promoting the benefits of health and exercise, including intramural cheerleading and baseball. The fall schedule will be sent home with students the end of next week along with class registration forms and will also be posted on the ACS website.

The Beginning Band after-school class is for 4th graders and will be held weekly on Mondays, beginning September 20. The Intermediate Band after-school class is for 5th graders and will be held weekly on Tuesdays, starting September 21.  Both classes are free and run from 3:15-4:00 pm. The classes are led by ACS Choral and Instrumental Director Tim Rosie.

Please check the soon-to-be released schedule for the start dates and any fees for the other classes being offered this fall.

Philly Pretzel Mondays, Popcorn Wednesdays Start this Week During Lunch

PTF Philly Pretzel Mondays and Popcorn Wednesdays are back! This coming Monday, September 13, the Parent-Teacher Fellowship will be selling Philly Pretzel Factory Soft Pretzels during lunch for $1, and on Wednesday, September 15, will be selling bags of popcorn for $1. Pretzels and popcorn cannot be purchased online through lunch ordering on RenWeb.

Pretzel and popcorn lunchtime sales will continue weekly throughout the school year.  Please know that the funds raised by the PTF go to support student scholarships and awards and teacher equipment and supplies.

COVID-19 Plan, Procedures, and Protocols Released for 2021-2022 School Year

The ACS Administration has finalized its COVID-19 School Reopening Plan and information regarding protocols and procedures for the 2021-2022 school year. An email was sent by Chief School Administrator Karen Oblen to all school families and staff on Thursday, September 2.  Please read the email and the details of the reopening plan and complete and submit the applicable forms described in the email.

“It is our goal for the 2021-2022 school year to give all of our students the opportunity to safely return to Atlantic Christian School for in-person instruction every day,” Oblen said in the email. “Current guidelines, as well as the current data on the status of COVID-19 in our community, indicate that with these precautions and the defined protocols in place we will be able to meet that goal.”

Oblen noted that parents and guardians must complete and submit the ACS COVID-19 Waiver of Liability, by utilizing a link to a JotForm, for their children to return to school on September 8. Oblen also noted that pursuant to Governor Phil Murphy’s Executive Order 251, all staff, students, and visitors to the indoor premises of the school are required to wear face masks, except under various circumstances, which are enumerated in the Executive Order and detailed in the email sent this week to parents and guardians.

Thank you for your cooperation and we look forward to welcoming our students and their families to begin this new school year together, putting our hope and trust in God and Him alone.

Important Updates Made to ACS Family App for Mobile Phones – Please Update or Reload App

Important updates to the new ACS Family App for mobile phones went into effect last week so anyone who has already downloaded the app to their Android or iPhone mobile phones needs to update the app or delete it and reload the app from the app store as soon as possible. If you not have the ACS App yet, you will automatically receive the updated version when you download the app.

The ACS App is a useful tool designed as a new service for school families, faculty, and staff. Ordering lunch, paying tuition, checking a student’s grades and homework, donating to ACS, and much more can now be done quickly and conveniently right from your cell phone.  All of the applications currently available to families and staff on RenWeb can be accessed through the ACS Family App, in addition to other useful resources, such as school and athletic calendars and links to ACS social media.

Peter Pan Jr. Musical Coming to ACS — Auditions on Sept. 8-9

Calling All Actors! — The adventure-filled musical, Peter Pan Jr., is coming to ACS this November. Auditions are open to ACS students in grades 3-12 and will held be on September 8 and 9. Please register online to select your audition time slot. Students can also select the specific role for which they would like to audition.

Auditions will be from 12:30-2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 8, the first day of school, and from 3:30-5:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 9. The registration fee is $150 and is payable as part of the online form and a part in the cast will be assigned to all students who sign up to audition.

ACS faculty member Genevieve Huff is excited to be producing and directing the show. She said there is room for lots of students from elementary to high school to be part of the cast. Any questions? Contact Mrs. Huff at: ghuff@acseht.org

Weekly rehearsals will be on Wednesdays from 3:30-6:30 p.m. from September 15 to November 10. There will be two performances — Friday, November 19 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 20 at 2 p.m.

Get Ready for Middle School Soccer Tryouts on Thursday, Sept. 9 After School

Calling all middle school boys and girls to put on their cleats and come out for soccer tryouts on Thursday, September 9, starting at 3:30 p.m.  Our middle school teams will be playing against public and non-public schools in the competitive Atlantic Cape Junior High League. Come on out and be a part of a program that focuses on teamwork, building skills, and learning the importance of good sportsmanship.

Leading the teams as coaches will be Casey Hopwood, in her 8th year as head coach of the Girls’ team, and ACS parent David O’Donnell, in his first year as head coach of the Boys’ team.

The first games of the middle school season will be on Thursday, September 16 away at Gloucester County Christian School in Sewell. Information on all upcoming middle school games is posted on the ACS website on the “Middle School Athletic Calendar” page under the “Athletics” tab and can also found on the ACS App. The calendar is updated as needed.

Please make sure that all your student’s athletic participation forms are completed by the first day of practice. The packet of Athletic Forms is available in the school office and on the ACS website and App under “Athletics.” An Athletic Fee of $150 for Middle School players will be due for all players who make the team rosters.

Lunch Program Starts First Day of School, Place Order on RenWeb on Sept. 7

The ACS Lunch Program will be available to students starting on the first day of school, Wednesday, September 8. Our delicious, healthy hot and cold catered lunches, which include a fruit and beverage, are once again being provided by Towne & Country Cafe, owned by ACS alumni parent Steve Thomas. Lunches must be ordered online through RenWeb by 3 p.m. on the day prior.

Some of the tasty lunch menu choices will include a turkey burger, baked ziti, chicken pot pie, grilled cheese and vegetable soup, a beef rice bowl, and more. A cheese pizza meal will be offered every other Friday, starting September 10. A Chick-fil-A sandwich or 8-nugget meal will be offered every other Friday, starting September 17.

The meal price for hot and cold lunches provided by Towne and Country and the cheese pizza meal will be $5.50. The Chick-fil-A sandwich or 8-nugget meal will be $6.00 and a Chick-fil-A sandwich or 8-nuggets ordered singly and not as a meal will be $4.75.

The Parent-Teacher Fellowship will also be selling Philly Pretzel Soft Pretzels for $1 every Monday during lunch, starting on Monday, September 13, and bags of popcorn for $1 each every Wednesday during lunch, starting on September 15. Pretzels and popcorn cannot be purchased online through RenWeb. The funds raised from pretzel and popcorn sales support the mission and programs of Atlantic Christian School.

Microwaves are available in the lunchroom for 6th-12th grade students to use. Please note that elementary students should not bring lunch items that need to be microwaved.

Highlights of New Additions, Upgrades to our School Campus

ACS staff members, contractors, and a number of volunteers worked diligently over the summer to accomplish important facility improvements on our school campus. The largest project involved renovating seven classrooms in modular buildings across from the main school building. Parents and students had a chance to tour the new classrooms on September 2 as part of New Family Orientation.

Some of the important upgrades accomplished in the classrooms included replacing tile floors with laminate, adding new windows and bathrooms, painting the inside and outside of the classrooms, adding new landscaping around the buildings, and installing new HVAC units. The classrooms are also all equipped with projectors, WiFi, security cameras, and a communications system connected to the main school building.

“We praise God for the way this very challenging project was accomplished in a short amount of time over the summer,” said Chief School Administrator Karen Oblen. “The addition of these new classrooms has made it possible for us to welcome many more students and their families to be a part of our ACS family.”

Other new additions to the ACS campus include the installation of new carpeting in six classrooms in the main school building, new striping of parking lot lines, and painting throughout the school. A new sensory exploration path was also added to a first floor hallway and students in the Early Education summer program got the first opportunity to use it. ACS parent Mike Jorgenson is also nearing completion of a face-lift to a gazebo that was relocated to be near the new modular classrooms.

We hope you will come out to see these upgrades and more at our Elementary Back-to-School Night on September 14 and our Middle School/High School Back-to-School Night on September 21.

Thank You to Volunteers Who Served at Back-to-School Work Days

An enthusiastic team of some 30 student and parent volunteers turned out for our two Back-to-School Work Days on August 26 and 30.  Faculty, staff, and volunteers worked side-by-side and helped relocated six classrooms to our newly renovated modular buildings. They also built health and safety shields to place on the cafeteria tables, helped with cleaning, and much more. Thank you for your hearts to serve. Your help really made a difference.

A special shout out to former student George Harmon for volunteering and bringing his George’s Landscaping truck to help transport boxes and furniture. Thank you also to ACS parent Cassandra Dix for donating delicious Philly Pretzels on August 26 for the group to snack on.

The ACS Family is all about teamwork and doing everything to the glory of God. What a great way to kick off the school year!

 

Student Spotlight — 10th Grader Evangelina Kim Makes Her Mark at National Softball Championship, Northeast Region

10th grader Evangelina Kim knows her way around the softball field and in late July the talented shortstop helped her team — the NJ Firecrackers — excel at the USSSA softball league’s Northeast Regional National Championships held in Salisbury, Maryland. The NJ Firecrackers placed 3rd out of 48 teams from North Carolina to Maine that competed in the week-long tournament. Even more impressive is that Eva’s team was comprised of 14- and 15-year-olds who played up in the 16- to 17-year-old division.

Eva’s stats during the tournament were a testament to her skills, with a batting average of .286 and OBP of .390,  and hitting 9 doubles, 1 triple, 21 RBI’s, 42 runs scored, and 31 stolen bases. This is the second exceptional youth travel team that Eva has played on during her budding softball career. Eva was also part of the Egg Harbor Township 12U Tornadoes softball team that captured the Babe Ruth World Series title in 2019.

The tournament concluded the season for the NJ Firecrackers, who are based out of Mays Landing and played year-round. The team, coached by John D’Agostino, opened each game with prayer in the huddle.

Congratulations, Eva, and we look forward to watching you play for the Lady Cougars softball team next spring.

 

Cougar Camp, Under the Sea Early Ed Program Wrap Up Fun-Filled Summer

The ACS campus was buzzing with activity all summer long as children from preschool to the sixth grade attended our popular, award-winning Cougar Camp and Early Education summer program. Faculty member Eric Tardif, in his second year as Cougar Camp Director, put together an exciting schedule of weekly-themed activities for nearly 90 campers who attended two or more days a week. “It was a summer filled with laughter, joy, and making memories,” said Tardif on the final day of camp on August 27. Early Education Director and Elementary Principal Gail Alford oversaw the Early Ed summer camp program for nearly 100 preschool and kindergarten-aged children.

In Cougar Camp, the children enjoyed field trips to Young’s Skating Center, Birch Grove and Estell Manor Parks, the Cape May Zoo, the Funny Farm Rescue, bowling at DiDonato Family Fun Center, and more. The campers also looked forward each week to water days on Wednesdays and Fridays, especially enjoying the Big Kahuna water slide and “foam fun days.”

Thursdays were STEM days and the challenging projects included constructing a tower using popsicle sticks, making a flashlight, and designing an aluminum foil boat that could hold marbles and float in a basin of water. The students also enjoyed learning more about alpacas, who visited the campus in June, and experienced the wonders of magic performed by Mr. Magico. The campers cooled off on several hot summer days with treats provided by Kona Water Ice.

The campers also held their own Camp Olympics, coinciding with the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, and even made their own Olympic medals out of oreos and fruit leather. The school garden was a favorite place of activity each week, where campers watered, weeded, and harvested tomatoes, beets, carrots, and much more, with some of the produce donated to the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, Southern Branch.

Each day in Cougar Camp began with the worship and devotions. The older campers led the group in several worship songs and devotions were presented by one of the camp counselors.

“One of the most memorable parts of camp for me was seeing the hearts of a number of children transform to desire to know God and to learn about what He wants for their lives,” Tardif said. “The seeds of the gospel were sown and we started seeing fruit from that.”

Congratulations to our camp directors and camp counselors for a memorable and life-changing summer.

ACS SpiritWear Now on Sale — Order by Friday, Sept. 10

ACS SpiritWear is now on sale, sponsored by the Parent-Teacher Fellowship (PTF), featuring a variety of hoodies and sweatshirts and a new personalized water bottle. Your purchase of ACS SpiritWear promotes school spirit and raises funds for the school.  SpiritWear is for ACS families, with sizes available from preschool to adult. SpiritWear is also approved apparel that can be worn by students during the school day. The deadline to place your order is Friday, September 10.

SpiritWear sweatshirts come as an ACS hoodie or crewneck in green or gray and feature the school name, logo, and Cougar paw. Green full-zip hooded sweatshirts are also available with the school logo. COVID-19 Mask Policy to Be Distributed to School Families Next Week

The ACS Administration will be finalizing and distributing the school’s COVID-19 Mask Policy for the 2021-2022 school year to school families next week.  The policy will incorporate the unanimous decision by the ACS Board of Directors at its regular August 16, 2021 meeting to give parents the ability to choose, through the use of an informed consent form, whether or not their children will be wearing a mask during school hours.

The school’s policy and important related documents will be sent via email to parents and guardians and will also be posted on the ACS website. Please keep an eye out for this important email. All families will be required to complete and submit a form indicating their wishes regarding mask wearing for their children.

The Board and Administration are also in full support of continuing to implement all health and safety protocols instituted in the 2020-2021 school year to combat the spread of COVID-19, including temperature checks upon arrival to school, protective barriers around student desks and on cafeteria lunch tables, encouraging hand washing, and posting of sanitation stations in various locations in the school.

High School Soccer Pre-Season Starts Aug. 23; Middle School Tryouts on Sept. 9

Our high school soccer pre-season will get underway next week — on Monday, August 23 — and will run for two weeks for the Varsity Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer Teams. Middle School Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer Try-outs will be on Thursday, September 9, starting at 3:30 p.m. Come on out and be a part of our outstanding and competitive soccer programs.

Any high school student interested in playing on an ACS team should come to the daily practices from Monday, August 23 to Friday, September 3. The Varsity Girls’ practice will be from 6:00-8:00 a.m. and the Varsity Boys’ practice will be from 8:00-10:00 a.m.  We are pleased to welcome back our two Varsity Coaches — Boys’ Varsity Coach Andres Tortola and Girls’ Varsity Coach Carly Witherow.

Two high school scrimmage games are tentatively planned for both teams next week — away at Pleasantville High School on Thursday, August 26 and at home on Friday, August 27 against Lancaster Christian School.

Lunchroom Volunteers Needed to Serve During School Year

We need volunteers to serve lunch and help with light clean-up. Volunteers can be parents, grandparents, and other friends of ACS. Services Coordinator Anne Block is now putting together her fall schedule so please contact her as soon as possible if you are able to serve our school and students in this way.

Volunteers can choose to serve daily, once a week, once a month, or any other frequency that fits your schedule. The serving time is from 10:00 am to 1 pm.

Volunteer Work Day — Thursday, August 26; Help with Classroom Set-up for School Year

Volunteers are needed on Thursday, August 26 to help us get ready for the new school as we relocate some classrooms and open new classrooms in our modular buildings. We’re excited about the way God is growing our school and we welcome our school families to help us get ready for the new year.  There are two 3-hour shifts for volunteers to choose from — 9 a.m. to Noon and Noon to 3 p.m.

Please let us know the specific shift that you are able to volunteer — 9 am to Noon OR Noon to 3 p.m. — so that we can prepare for and organize the specific tasks to be accomplished. There are lots of opportunities to be involved, including helping move boxes, desks, chairs, general cleaning, and more.

Volunteers can be high school age or older and ACS students can earn service hours by participating. We welcome all volunteers. Thank you!

 

Looking to Carpool to ACS? Join our Stronger Together Facebook Group to Connect with Other Families

Are you looking to join a carpool to bring your children to ACS?  Join our Facebook group for school parents — the Atlantic Christian School – Stronger Together group — and connect with other school families. Post a message about your interest in carpooling and list your city/area so that fellow parents can reach out to tell you if they are interested.

ACS students who could benefit from a carpool live in the following cities:  Galloway, Middle/Lower Township, Mays Landing, and Upper Township.  Students living in Absecon, Egg Harbor Township, and Ocean City are receiving bus transportation to ACS provided by their local school districts.

Families who are not receiving bus transportation and live within 20 miles to the school are eligible for $1,000 in Aid in Lieu of Transportation for each child in K-12th grade.  To receive this aid, the first step for a family who is driving or carpooling is to fill out the B6T Form and return it to the school office. Your local school district will then send you a B7T Form to fill out during the first semester of school.  The school district (not ACS) will mail a check to parents directly, half the amount after the first semester and half after the second semester.

Congratulations to our 2020-2021 Honor Roll Students in the 1st-12th Grades

Congratulations to the 236 students in the 1st to 12th grades who were academic achievers during the 2020-2021 school year and earned a place on the year-end Honor Roll.

“We’re very thankful for the way our teachers and students worked together to press on through this past school year and stay on track academically, while dealing with the challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic,” said Chief School Administrator Karen Oblen. “Our students are ready for the next school year and we are especially proud of those who excelled and are being recognized on the Honor Roll.”

Oblen said the elementary students in grades 1-5 who earned a 95% average or higher in every major subject received the Highest Honors designation and students who received an 85%-94% average in every major subject received the Honors designation. Middle School and High School students in grades 6-12 who earned a cumulative GPA of 3.8 or higher at the end of the school year received the Highest Honors designation. Students in grades 6-12 who earned a cumulative GPA of 3.5-3.79 received the Honors designation.
