Sal’s Café in Somers Point took top honors for its New England Clam Chowder at Atlantic Christian School’s Bowls of Hope Soup-Tasting Benefit on Saturday, February 4 in the school’s gymnasium. Sal’s Café was selected to receive both the “Golden Spoon Award” and the “Chef’s Souper Soup Award” out of the 15 restaurants who participated in the community-building fund-raiser.

Proceeds from the Bowls of Hope benefitted the educational programs at Atlantic Christian School and the Atlantic City Rescue Mission. ACS high school students presented Rescue Mission President Dan Brown with a check for $1,120 on March 8 to help fund the Mission’s kitchen renovation project. In addition, a canned food drive held in conjunction with the Bowls of Hope, led by National Honor Society student members, collected over 260 cans of soup and other non-perishable food items that were donated to the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, Southern Branch.

Close to 400 people enjoyed sampling a variety of delicious soups and voting for their top pick to receive the “Golden Spoon Award.” Acclaimed Chef Joseph Massaglia, owner of Mama Mia’s Ristorante in Seaville and host of the weekly Saturday morning radio show “Table for Two” on WOND 1400 AM, tasted the soups from each of the participants and also selected Sal’s Café for the “Chef’s Souper Soup Award.” Gregory’s Bar and Restaurant in Somers Point placed a close second in the “Golden Spoon Award” with its She Crab Bisque. El Coyote in Galloway was the runner up for Chef Massaglia’s “Souper Soup Award” with its Fiesta Clam Chowder.

“We were thrilled to see so many families and friends come together to support our school and two outstanding local charities that are helping the homeless and needy in our community,” said Chief School Administrator Karen Oblen. “We are very grateful to the participating restaurants that donated the soups and for the support from Sturdy Savings Bank and other community partners that helped make Bowls of Hope a success.”  Atlantic Christian sponsored its first Bowls of Hope event in 2013 and the proceeds benefited local charities involved in Hurricane Sandy Relief.
