The ACS Costume Department is busily creating costumes for our next school play, The Sound of Music. From lederhosen and dirndls to military uniforms and nun habits, this show calls for a variety of pieces for our 4th-12th grade actors, some with up to seven costume changes.

Head of the costume department, Mrs. Rhapsody Hahn-Chaney is assisted by parent-volunteer Christy Wagner and early elementary aide Brooke Chambers to develop iconic pieces for this classic story. Four upper elementary students Nora Wigglesworth, Izabella Diaz, Alexis Salisbury, and Addison Figueroa are participating in the Costume Club, which meets in the Computer Lab on Thursdays. The girls are learning to handstitch, pin and cut fabric from patterns, use a sewing machine, fit actors, and manage the inventory.

After the show, these new costumes will be added to the ACS Costume Catalog where they can be repurposed for future shows. Our online rental form allows other local schools, theaters, churches, and dance companies to rent costumes from ACS, helping to bring funds into our drama department. New this year, Mrs. Hahn-Chaney has launched a private Facebook group called South Jersey Performing Arts: Directors & Teams and is actively networking with other local designers and directors. She will be publishing a performing arts calendar this fall to promote many stage events in the area and help to bring this community together.
Mrs. Hahn-Chaney wants to formally recognize our many contributors: Brenda Pelikan, for getting our sewing machines professionally repaired, Deb Tormey for streamlining our organization process, Lisa Connolly and Marilyn Harris, for helping source pieces, Debbie Roland of the Margate Players for lending nun costumes, Mary Roesch and Bonnie Shimmin, for fabric and costume donations and the many other helping hands.
