Varsity Soccer Season Gets Underway, Middle School Soccer Tryouts Run From Sept. 8-12

Our high school soccer pre-season got underway on August 22, with two weeks of practices before the Varsity Boys’ faced off against Life Center Academy in Westampton, NJ on September 1, losing a close 3-2 non-conference game against a nationally-ranked team. Middle School Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer Tryouts will be on September 8, 9, and 12, from 3:00-5:00 p.m.

In the September 1 game against Life Center, 10th grader Chase Leach scored both ACS goals and 12th grader Jake DeNick defended strong in the goal. The Varsity Boys will play in their first home game on Friday, September 9 against Abundant Life Academy of Nutley, NJ. Faculty member Chris Lopez is in his first year as the Boys’ Varsity Head Coach, leading a talented team that finished in second place last season in the Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference (TSCAC).

Both the Varsity Boys’ and Girls’ teams will play at home against American Christian School from Rockaway, NJ on September 12.  ACS alumnus Carly Witherow (’08) is in her 8th year as the Varsity Girls’ Head Coach, with five TSCAC championships under her belt.

ACS welcomes two new coaches for the Middle School teams — Silas Nixon for the Middle School Boys’ team and Becky Pineo for the Middle School Girls’ team. Any middle school student interested in playing on an ACS team should come prepared to tryouts with cleats, shin guards, a water bottle, and completed athletic participation forms. The packet of Athletic Forms is available in the school office and on the ACS App and website under the “Athletics” tab. An Athletic Fee of $150 will be due for all Middle School players on the team roster.

The Middle School teams will face their first opponent on Friday, September 16 at home against Gloucester County Christian School, with a 4 p.m. start time.

Athletic Calendars with information on all upcoming soccer games are posted on the ACS website and ACS App and are updated as needed. The calendars can be found on the “High School Athletic Calendar” and “Middle School Athletic Calendar” pages under the “Athletics” tab.

ACS Students Compete in Northern NJ Christian School Spelling Contest; Madelyn Petrinec Places 2nd in 4th Grade Level

Thirteen ACS students from the 2nd to the 8th grades competed in a Northern New Jersey Christian School Spelling Contest on October 14 and Madelyn Petrinec received a red ribbon for taking second place among 4th graders in the contest. The spelling contest was held at the Abundant Life Worship Center in Nutley, New Jersey and ACS was among eight schools who competed in the event.

“Maddie is a super star speller and we are proud of her,” said Spelling Club Advisor Jessica Martin. “This was the first time our school competed in this contest and it had a different format from our school’s annual spelling bee.”  Unlike the format of the ACS bee held each winter, the students did not know what words would be included in the contest and were not able to study ahead for them. “Our students did very well considering this different format, and we had several students who narrowly missed joining Maddie in the finals.” The bee format had students only competing at their specific grade levels and the top three spellers advanced to the finals for their grade.

The students selected to represent ACS in the contest were winners or runners-up in last year’s class-level spelling bees. The students who competed were:  Oritseyemi Pessu and Barrett Woods (2nd grade); Caitlyn Doucett and Charlotte Newman (3rd grade); Madelyn Petrinec and Luke Sabulao (4th grade); Mia Gaffney and Gaebriel Hahn-Chaney (5th grade); Nino Miranda and Matthew Coates (6th grade); Tommy Potenski and Nathanael Thompson (7th grade); and Gabriella Goodwin (8th grade).

The seven other schools who sent students to compete in the bee were: Abundant Life Academy, American Christian School, Eastern Christian School, Hawthorne Christian Academy, Sussex Christian School, The Arrow Academy, and Timothy Christian School.

 

ACS Middle School, High School Athletes Sweep TSCAC Track Meet

Congratulations to the 60 ACS middle school and high school students who competed in the Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference Track Meet on Thursday, May 6 and earned medals and top team honors. All four ACS teams — the High School Boys’ and Girls’ teams and the Middle School Boys’ and Girls’ teams — finished in first place with the highest number of points earned among the teams from six other regional Christian schools who participated.

Overall, ACS received 34 first place medals — with the Middle School Girls’ earning 10, the Middle School Boys’ earning 8, the High School Girls with 7, and the High School Boys had 9.

“I’m very grateful for the outstanding efforts of the entire ACS family that all worked together, using their various gifts and talents, to make this track meet a success,” said Athletic Director Pam Hitchner, who organized the meet. This is the 14th year that ACS has hosted the Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference track at its campus.  The other schools participating in the meet were: Abundant Life Academy, Ambassador Christian Academy, Cumberland Christian School, Gloucester County Christian School, King’s Christian School, and The Pilgrim Academy.

The day-long event, held under sunny, blue skies, saw several middle school and high school athletes set school and meet records. The track and field athletes and their individual accomplishments will be recognized at the year-end sports awards ceremonies.

Hitchner said that the ACS runners shined particularly bright during the meet, taking first place in all 12 relay races held. Several middle school and high school athletes also made significant contributions to their teams. 7th grader Sophia Costello scored 14 points for her Middle School Girls’ team and 8th grader Isabell Alford scored 12. For the Middle School Boys’ team, 8th grader Jayden Sanchez led all teammates, scoring 13 points. On the High School Girls’ team, 10th graders Paige Noble and Reyna Lewis led their team with 12 and 10 points, respectively.  For the High School Boys, 10th grader Cruz Lewis scored 15 points and his 11th grade brother, Cole, scored 7. Collectively, the three Lewis siblings scored 32 points over the course of the meet.

A large volunteer team of students, alumni, and parents helped manage the 20 track and field events in the meet, serving as timers, working at the scorer’s table, and cooking and serving at the concessions stand. In particular, Hitchner recognized and thanked several individuals for their efforts: PE teacher Ben Chapman, for field preparation of the meet competition areas;  PE teacher Kaylee Breunig, who served as Hitchner’s assistant;  alumni parent Larry Martin, who oversaw the scorer’s table; substitute teacher Mike Bohs, who served as the official starter of all the races; Jeff Wolf, who served as the “Clerk of Course,” assisted by his daughter, Renee; and PTF President Terry Vogel, who headed up the concessions stand that raised funds to support the ACS Athletic Department.
