ACS marked its 30th Commencement on June 9 with various speakers urging the 29 students in the Class of 2023 to draw upon the Biblical values and lessons learned at ACS, to use their gifts and abilities to serve God, and to seek God’s wisdom and strength as they begin the next chapter of their lives.
“It is my prayer that each of your dreams will be realized and that you will continue to make a difference in the world,” said Chief School Administrator Karen Oblen, who welcomed the parents, faculty, staff, and friends to the ceremony held in the school gym that was also live-streamed on the ACS YouTube channel. “The seeds of God’s Word have been planted in you here. Now go out and do God’s work.”
Commencement keynote speaker Christian Delacruz, the ACS Event Coordinator and a middle school and high school Bible teacher, encouraged the graduates to be bold in their faith and to seek to know God intimately. “As you move out into the world and seek to fulfill your dreams, understand that there is no secure foundation except in Christ alone.”
Salutatorian Reyna Lewis, 18, of Egg Harbor Township, noted that it took years of hard work, dedication, and perseverance for her and her fellow classmates to make it to graduation day, and thanked ACS teachers and family members for the important role that they played. “When faced with problems or trials, we were always encouraged to go to God because He is the one who gives us wisdom, love, understanding, and strength,” Lewis said. She finished with a 4.11 GPA and will be attending the University of Notre Dame to major in biochemistry.
Valedictorian Paige Noble, 18, of Egg Harbor Township, challenged her classmates to make the most of every opportunity and new experience. “We only live one life and we need to live that life for Jesus most of all,” Noble said. “God will do extraordinary things if we are looking for Him to use us. God needs to use us in His plan, not our own.” Noble, who achieved a 4.22 GPA, will be attending Cairn University and is considering majoring in math education, marketing, or sports management.
Three talented seniors who were members of the High School Worship Team — Daniella Ajayi, Tommy Ellison, Jr., and Jada Logan — presented special music during the program, performing “Time of Our Lives” by Tyrone Wells. Ajayi will be attending Howard University, where she plans to major in health sciences and minor in psychology. Ellison will be attending Liberty University, where he plans to major in nursing and minor in music therapy. Logan will be attending Temple University, where she plans to major in computer science.
Chief School Administrator Karen Oblen, Upper School Principal Meg McHale, and Board of Directors’ Chair Les Tomlinson participated in the presentation of the diplomas to the graduates. After receiving their diplomas, the graduates stepped out into the audience to present their parents and guardians with long stemmed roses as a gesture of gratitude.
As each graduate was introduced, McHale announced the various awards and scholarships that students had received. She noted that the Class of 2023 was collectively receiving $790,000 in college scholarships, after being offered $1.14 million from the schools they applied to. One graduate plans to serve in the U.S. Coast Guard.
Board of Directors Chair Pastor Les Tomlinson gave a closing charge to the graduates in his benediction at the close of the ceremony — Go out in joy, in confidence, in strength, in wisdom, in love with kindness and blessings to give away, use your studies to bless God’s beautiful world, and go out with freedom, knowing there so much more to see and enjoy.

The ACS Varsity Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball Teams are the 2023 Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference Champions! Both teams won hard-fought battles on February 25 in their championship games, which were held in the ACS gym. The No. 1-seeded Lady Cougars remained undefeated, beating Gloucester County Christian School 48-43, and the No. 2-seeded Varsity Boys’ Team pulled off an upset, beating No. 1-seeded Pilgrim Academy 54-45, a team that had been undefeated all season. It was a night to celebrate!
This is the fourth consecutive year that our Varsity Boys’ Team has brought home the championship trophy. The Lady Cougars last won the TSCAC championship in 2021. ACS advanced to the championship games by handily winning their semi-final matches on February 23 against King’s Christian School.
Congratulations to Varsity Boys’ head coach Drew Carney, assisted by Dan Carney and ACS 2013 alumnus Ben Chapman, and to Varsity Girls’ head coach and ACS 2012 alumnus Kaylee Breunig, assisted by Dara Kimmerley, for their hard work and dedication. This was an exciting and memorable season.
Eight ACS players were named TSCAC All-Stars for the 2023 season and were recognized at the end of the championship games. The four Girls’ Varsity All-Stars are — Evangelina Kim and Paige Noble (1st team), Reyna Lewis (2nd team), and Becca Kelley (honorable mention). The four Boys’ Varsity All-Stars are — Noah Stokes (1st team), Caleb Vogel (2nd team), and Charlie Costello and Noah Gibbs (honorable mention).
ACS also received two other special recognition awards from the conference. Senior Paige Noble received the 2023 TSCAC MVP Varsity Girls’ Basketball Award. She was one of the team’s leading scorers and a force to be reckoned with both on offense and defense. Paige will be attending Cairn University in the fall.
Coach Breunig received the 2023 TSCAC Varsity Girls Basketball Coach of the Year Award. This is the second time she has received this award. The first time was in the 2017-2018 season when she was in her first year as head coach of the Lady Cougars.
During this season, Coach Breunig was also honored for earning her 100th win on February 15 when the Lady Cougars defeated Oakcrest 54-24 in a nonconference game. In her 6th year as head coach, Coach Breunig has now led the Lady Cougars to two TSCAC Conference championships and five first place finishes in the regular season. She also received the TSCAC Coach of the Year Award in the 2017-2018 season, her first year as head coach. Coach Breunig is a 2012 ACS alumnus who was a strong varsity player and team leader during her four years on the Lady Cougars.
In the Championship varsity girls’ game, junior guard Evangelina Kim led the team in scoring with 20 points and pulled down 8 rebounds. Senior forward Reyna Lewis scored 16 and also had 8 rebounds. Senior guard Paige Noble had 7 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 steals. Freshman forward Gianna Flynn scored five and Flynn and junior forward Becca Kelley each had five rebounds.
In the Championship varsity boys’ game, three players were the top scorers — junior Noah Gibbs, with 15 points, sophomore Noah Stokes with 14 points, and senior Caleb Vogel with 13 points. Gibbs and Stokes also led the team in rebounds, each pulling down 12, and were strong on defense, with Gibbs grabbing 3 steals and Stokes getting 2 blocks. A key contributor to the team’s success in the final quarter of the game was consistently sinking their baskets at the foul line.
At the conclusion of the games, the ACS teams did the traditional “cutting down of the nets,” which each player and coach cutting a piece of the net to take home as a souvenir of their victories.
ACS is pleased to periodically recognize and congratulate several of its alumni and former students who are making their mark in college, in the working world, and in other endeavors, building on the strong educational and spiritual foundation they received during their years at ACS. Byron Nelson (’09) is in his 4th year as the Boys’ Basketball Head Coach at the Atlantic County Institute of Technology in Mays Landing and is having another exceptional season, recently winning the championship in the Bill Osborn Memorial Bracket at the Boardwalk Basketball Classic in December in Wildwood. Coach Byron also teaches health and PE at ACIT. Byron and his brothers, Wayne and Andrew, were recently highlighted in a Press of Atlantic City column on January 13, 2023, which focused on how all three brothers are involved in coaching basketball in the Atlantic City area. Wayne is head coach of the Atlantic City High School boys’ basketball team and Andrew, who also attended ACS until the 8th grade, is Bryon’s assistant coach at ACIT. Since 2015, Dara has been working for the Atlantic City Rescue Mission, first as a chef and now as manager of the thrift store. Dara’s passion is helping people in need. She also enjoys using her artistic talents to paint murals in the U.S. and overseas. She and her husband, Mike, traveled to Nicaragua several years ago, where Dara painted several murals. They fell in love with the simpler life and saw opportunities to help. They now hope to return to Nicaragua in the future to live and pursue missions work with the youth. Dara’s plans to serve in Nicaragua were featured in a June 16, 2022 article in the Shore Local Newsmagazine, which was written by 2014 ACS graduate Sarah Fertsch, who is a staff writer for the publication. Dara and Mike live in Hammonton and are now expecting their first child in March 2023.

His heart is focused on serving in ministry and he has taken a Bible equipping class with Sojourn Community Church and done a pastoral internship with them. Trevor recently returned to ACS to be the guest speaker at Middle School Chapel on December 1, 2022, where he talked about the tactics and strategies of the devil and how he works tirelessly to make us question the truth in God’s Word. “The devil is the prince of lies and his native tongue is lies,” Trevor said in his remarks. “By identifying who our enemy is it will set you up on a pattern for redemption and joy.” Trevor’s mother, Linda Stiteler, is an ACS middle school teacher.
Candace Winkel Menno (’16) graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Masters in the Science of Counseling from Clarks Summit University in May 2022 and a month later tied the knot with PJ Menno. ACS is pleased to welcome seven new Early Education and Elementary teachers to our school family — Heather Aspenberg, Samuel Gottschall, Dena Johnson, Olivia Leach, Holly McCrosson, Jessica Samuels, and Michelle Wheeler. Several of these teachers have previously served at ACS in different roles, including as aides, substitute teachers, summer camp staff, and coaching the cheer team. What they all share is a passion for Christian education and a desire to show love and encouragement to their students and be a light for Christ.
Heather Aspenberg — Heather is our new PreK3B teacher. She first came to ACS last year to work as an Early Education Center aide and continued working over the summer in the Early Ed Summer Program. Two close family members who had previously worked at ACS encouraged her to apply — her mother-in-law, Patty Aspenberg, and her sister-in-law, Christy. Heather holds a BA in hospitality from Johnson and Wales, but after working for several years as a general manager at Sonesta in Somers Point, she decided to change direction and pursue a job in education. “I’ve been working with children since high school and really feel that’s my calling,” Heather said. Her life verse, found in 1 Peter 4:8, serves her well in her new position. “It’s easy to think negatively, but we have to love everyone, show them grace and mercy, and pray for them daily,” Heather said. Heather and her husband, Brian, live in Egg Harbor Township and worship at Fresh Start Church. They have three children, and their son, Liam, is in the 7th grade at ACS.
Samuel Gottschall — Sam is a native of Piscataway, but relocated to South Jersey some three years ago after meeting his wife, Elyse, who has deep roots in the area. His father-in-law is Kyle Huber, the lead pastor at Greentree Church in Egg Harbor Township. Sam holds an BA in music from Moody Bible Institute and a MA in elementary education from Grand Canyon University. Prior to coming to ACS, Sam was a special education aide in the Ocean City School District, and he is bringing that experience into the classroom as a new 5th grade teacher. Sam said his favorite verse is Hebrews 4:12. “This verse captures how I want to live my life,” Sam said. “It describes the Word of God as living and active, with the ability to create real change.” Sam and Elyse live in Egg Harbor Township and co-lead the children’s ministry at Greentree Church.
Dena Johnson — Dena has returned to the ACS faculty this year after teaching middle school and high school Spanish from 2016-2020. In her new position, Dena is teaching 5th grade grammar, spelling, writing, and Bible. “I love languages and I’m just moving from Spanish to English,” Dena said with a smile. Prior to serving at ACS, Dena taught Spanish in the Wildwood Crest K-8 school for 12 years. A Bible verse that has been especially meaningful to her in the last decade is Psalm 25:5 — “Guide me in your truth, and teach me, for you are God by Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.” Dena also serves in ministry at Mission Point, where she has been a preschool Sunday school teacher for 22 years. Dena and her husband, Rob, have one son, Samuel, who is in 7th grade at ACS.
Olivia Leach — Olivia is a new 2nd grade teacher. She gained valuable experience serving at ACS over the past two years, as a substitute teacher and as a staff member for summer Cougar Camp and the Early Education Summer Program. She is a native of Boyertown, PA and holds a BS in early education and a MS in special education from Cairn University. She lives in Linwood and her brother, Chase, is an ACS 10th grader. She attends Coastal Christian and is also part of the Morning Star Fellowship worship team. Her life verse is 1 Timothy 4:12 – “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.”
Holly McCrosson — Holly is a South Jersey native who grew up in Upper Township and graduated from Ocean City High School. She has known of ACS for some years and even considered transferring to it for her senior year of high school because she wanted to grow spiritually. In 2021, she earned her BA in elementary education from Southeastern University and decided to use her time at home during the COVID-19 pandemic to earn an MA in trauma informed education from Columbia College. As a new kindergarten teacher, Holly said a Bible verse that is meaningful to her is 1 Corinthians 13:4-8. “I want people to feel God’s love when they see me, and especially the children that I have the privilege of working with this year,” Holly said. Prior to coming to ACS, she worked as a preschool teacher at Tomorrow’s World in Marmora. Her home church is Calvary Baptist Church in Dennis, but this fall she has become involved with a church plant in Pleasantville, Rise City Church, started by several alumni from Southeastern University.
Jessica Samuels — Jessica joins the ACS faculty as our PreK4B teacher, bringing a wealth of experience with young children. She worked for eight years as a PreK4 teacher at the Gospel of Grace Christian School, formerly located in Linwood, and has been a stay-at-home mom for the past six years with her two children, Saylor, 3, and Shiloh, 6, who started attending ACS this fall. A talented musician, Jessica loves incorporating music into the classroom. She has been a worship leader for over 17 years with Gospel of Grace Ministries in Egg Harbor Township. She also enjoys working in the ACS Early Education Center alongside her sister-in-law, PreK4A teacher Jennifer Kelley. “Christian education is a top priority for my husband, Jake, and I and originally I was planning to be a flex aide in the Early Education Center, but God had other plans and I have learned over the years that no matter what we think, God is in control,” Jessica said. A Bible verse that has been meaningful to her in the past three years is Isaiah 55:8, where the Lord declares – “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Michelle Wheeler — Michelle has been an ACS parent, cheer team coach, and preschool aide, and is now excited to join the faculty as our PreK2A teacher. Michelle said she loves being part of a school where children are learning about God and His Word every day to help them follow the right path for the rest of their lives. Michelle holds an Associates degree from Wilmington University, where she was also on the Wildcats Cheer Team. Michelle and her husband, Sean, live in Mays Landing and have two children, Adrianna and Sean, who attend ACS. “My children love to pray and I’ve seen them grow so much spiritually since attending ACS,” Michelle said. She said her life verse found in 1 Thessalonians 5:11 encompasses how she tries to be an encourager in her daily life, at home, in the classroom, and elsewhere. “We all have some sort of goal in life and maybe all someone needs is just a few words of encouragement to give them the push that they need,” Michelle said. She and her family worship at Fusion Church.
ACS 11th graders learned about the various academic, athletic, and extra-curricular programs offered at Cairn University, a Christian university in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, during an October 18 classroom presentation by Stephen Hogan, an Admissions Counselor at Cairn. The presentation was part of a series of visits from college representatives organized by Guidance Counselor Christina Ragland for the high school “College and Careers Class.”
Ragland said the class, which is required for all 11th graders, goes for the entire school year and focuses on college in the first semester and on careers in the second semester. “The goal of the first semester is to provide students with insight and strategies on how to navigate the college application process, introduce them to the various majors, and explore the similarities and differences among colleges and universities,” Ragland said. Other college representatives on the presentation list this semester are from Lancaster Bible College, Palm Beach Atlantic University, and Stockton University.
During the second semester, students are introduced to a variety of careers and learn about resume building, the job interview process, and entrepreneurship strategies.
“Last year, our students had a Shark Tank-inspired competition where they worked in groups to create a new product or organization and their fellow classmates chose a first, second, and third place winner,” Ragland said. “The students really enjoyed the project and we plan to do that again in the spring.”
Congratulations to our Varsity Boys’ Basketball team for winning first place at a Christmas Basketball Tournament hosted by Cairn University on December 29 and 30, beating Faith Christian Academy of Sellersville, PA in the championship round in overtime play. The Varsity Girls’ team also advanced to the championship game, but lost to Faith Christian Academy of Sellersville, finishing in second place.
12th grader Aaron Glancey and 11th grader Caleb Vogel were named to the All-Tournament Boys’ team, with Vogel also being named the Tournament Boys’ MVP. 10th grader Evangelina Kim was named to the All Tournament Girls’ team.
“We’re proud of the way both teams played,” said Athletic Director Pam Hitchner. “The tournament gave us an opportunity to compete against teams from other states that are not part of our conference and see how we match up.” The four schools who competed in the tournament were: Atlantic Christian School, Faith Christian Academy (Sellersville, PA); Faith Christian Academy (Martinsburg, WV); and Lancaster County Christian School (Lancaster, PA).
As of mid-January, the Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference (TSCAC) basketball season is just getting underway. The Varsity Boys’ team has an overall record of 5-5 and is 1-1 in the TSCAC and the Varsity Girls’ team is 6-5 overall and 2-0 in the TSCAC.
