Fun Activities Planned for Spirit Week — Jan. 27-Feb. 3

A series of fun activities, including themed dress-down days with prizes for the best dressed, are planned for Spirit Week — from Friday, January 27 to Friday, February 3. Students in K-12th grade, staff, school families, and friends are encouraged to participate and show their school spirit as the ACS basketball teams get ready to play several exciting home games.

Spirit Week will kick off with “Green-and-White Day” on Friday, January 27, as ACS hosts King’s Christian School at home, and will culminate with “Whiteout Day” on Friday, February 3, when ACS will face off against The Pilgrim Academy at home. Students dressed in all white at the February 3 games will get free admission.

Athletic Director Pam Hitchner said the ACS middle school and high school basketball teams are posting strong, winning records and fans are filling the stands at home games to cheer them on to victory.

The Middle School Boys’ Team, under head coach Josh Clark, is undefeated with a 12-0 record, and the Middle School Girls’ Team, under head coach Dan Vasquez, has a 4-2 record in the Atlantic Cape Junior High League. The Varsity Boys’ Team, under head coach Drew Carney, is 8-5 overall and 3-0 in the Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference (TSCAC) and the Varsity Girls’ Team is 13-5 overall and 3-0 in the TSCAC.

Athletic Director Hitchner, who has organized Spirit Week, wants to see every student and staff member show their school spirit by participating in the Spirit Week activities. She said students who are best dressed according to each day’s theme will be selected for prizes.

No ripped jeans or leggings or tight or yoga-style pants are allowed on any day. If you have elementary PE class on any of the days, you need to wear sneakers so you can participate in gym class. Any students choosing not to participate should come to school in their regular school uniform.

The chart below lists the lineup of activities planned for Spirit Week:

Cheer

Twenty-two middle school and high school students are part of this year’s cheerleading squad, under head coach Morgan Gibson, assisted by Michelle Wheeler. Team tryouts were held in early September and the squad has been practicing weekly since that time. Practices will increase to four times a week in mid-December. The team will cheer at select home and away games and is preparing to compete in three upcoming ImpACT Cheer and Dance Competitions from January to March.

“We’re very excited about taking our Cheer Team to the next level and competing in a different division this year,” Gibson said. The Cheer Team achieved national recognition in the spring of 2022 after competing in several meets and being named the national grand champion in The ONE Finals School Cheer Division, Junior High Intermediate Level.

Gibson said the squad has been busy this fall leading several fundraisers to help cover the costs of competition entry fees, uniforms, cheer training equipment, and more.  The squad has raised some $5,000 toward their $15,000 goal by selling wristbands in October to Playland’s Castaway Cove and selling Spiritwear, s’mores kits, and doing face painting at Homecoming and the Under the Lights home soccer game on October 21.

The members of the cheer squad are: Ashlee Alford, Ava Barberio (captain), Annalena DiMaio, Rebecca DiMaio (captain), April Eaves, Mackenzie Flynn (captain), Makenzie Fresh, Kylie Jackson, Raslyn Jacoby, Emily Johnson, Grace Johnson, Abigail Kelley, Ava Lombardi, Autumn Loo, Kiara Loo, Tara Mccorkle, Madeline Neill, Solia Pecou, Chelsie Richards, Haven Sanchez (captain), Makayla Tomlinson, and Taylor Vola.

Largest-Ever Cheerleading Squad Begins Exciting Winter Season, Plans to Enter Spring Cheer Competitions

The winter cheerleading season is underway with 29 middle school and high school students participating, making it the largest cheer squad in school history. The team has ambitious goals, with plans to cheer at both home and away basketball games and to participate in several cheerleading competitions in the spring of 2022. The squad cheered for the first time at the December 7 home Varsity basketball games against Doane Academy and traveled to Pennsylvania on December 10 to cheer for ACS at the Delco Basketball Tournament.

Congratulations to five of the team members, who have already seen competitive cheer success in a local area meet. 7th graders Ashlee Alford, Annalena DiMaio, April Eaves, Mackenzie Flynn, and Abigail Kelley, who are part of the Varsity EHT Eagles Cheerleading Team, won first place in the Varsity Division at the Egg Harbor Township High School Cheer Competition on November 14.

Five members of the ACS Cheer Squad, who are part of the Varsity EHT Eagles Cheerleading Team, won first place in the Varsity Division at the November 14 Egg Harbor Township High School Cheer Competition.

The ACS cheerleading team has been practicing three to four times a week since early November, led by Head Coach Morgan Gibson and Assistant Coach Kelly Flynn.

Gibson said several new training activities have been added for the squad this season.  On November 27, the co-owners of Reign Athletics, a cheer gym in Moorestown, NJ that runs a competitive All-Star cheerleading program, led the ACS cheerleaders in a 7-hour practice to teach them a competition routine to use in the spring cheer meets and to perform at some half-times (see photo above).

“We were so excited and pleased with the way Kayla Price and Tyler Washington from Reign Athletics worked with our squad and helped them move up to the next level,” Gibson said. “They were also impressed with the skill level of our team and categorized our team as a Level 2 cheerleading squad.”

Gibson said the cheerleaders will also be participating in a 6-week program at Blake’s Gymnastics in Northfield, meeting weekly to work with the Blake’s coaches on improving their tumbling skills.

Congratulations to the 29 students who are part of this year’s Cheerleading Team — Ashlee Alford, Ava Barberio, McKenzie Cubbage, Victoria Dade, Annalena DiMaio, Rebecca DiMaio, April Eaves, Mackenzie Flynn, Makenzie Fresh, Kylie Jackson, Grace Johnson, Melody Kane, Abigail Kelley, Rielly Kisielewski, Ava Lombardi, Autumn Loo, Kiara Loo, Ja’Niyah Martin, Jadelyn Maurer, Lydia McCarthy, Tara McCorkle, Heather Milstead, Nadia Pearson, Sophia Puglisi, Chelsie Richards, Haven Sanchez, Isabella Santos, Makayla Tomlinson, and Geanna Ulerio.

Varsity Basketball Player Landon Shivers Honored for Grabbing 500 Rebounds

ACS recognized and honored junior forward Landon Shivers, a member of the Varsity Boys’ Basketball team, for achieving the significant milestone of pulling down 500 rebounds with a special presentation on Friday, January 10 in the ACS gym before the home game against Baptist Regional School.

Athletic Director Pam Hitchner presented Landon with a special commemorative game ball. Cougars Head Coach Dan Carney and Landon’s parents, Scott and Heather Shivers, were invited to join Landon court-side to be recognized for their contributions to Landon’s success.

The 6-foot, 9-inch Landon pulled down his 500th rebound on December 30 during the Doane Academy Tournament. He becomes one of just 12 basketball players in school history to reach this milestone during their high school career and his name will be added to a school banner hanging in the gym.

In Friday’s game, ACS beat Baptist Regional School 75-42, and Landon grabbed 14 rebounds and had two steals.

Varsity Basketball Teams Undefeated in TSCAC With Second Half of Season Ahead

The Varsity Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball teams are off to a stellar start, with undefeated records of 5-0 in the Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference (TSCAC) and five weeks left in the second half of the season. “Both teams are doing great and playing better each time they’re on the court,” said Athletic Director Pam Hitchner. “We’re also very pleased with the enthusiasm of our school families and friends who are filling the bleachers at our home games and helping energize our players.”

The Lady Cougars, led by Kaylee Breunig in her 3rd year as head coach, started the season strong, winning the Delco Christian Tip-Off Basketball Tournament on December 7, with high-scoring guard Cristen Winkel receiving the tournament MVP award, both firsts in school history. The Girls’ team played well again in the December 27-28 Boardwalk Classic in Wildwood, losing to Absegami High School and then beating Cedar Creek High School.

The Varsity Boys’ team also got off to a great start in December at the Doane Academy Tournament, winning 2 out of 3 games and placing third in the tournament. Dan Carney is in his 4th year as head coach, assisted by Drew Carney, Ben Chapman, and Paul Jones.

The ACS teams have a challenging schedule, playing teams both in the TSCAC and in the Cape Atlantic League. The Varsity Girls currently have a 3-1 record against area high schools in the Cape Atlantic League and will face ACIT, Egg Harbor Township, Pleasantville, and Winslow Township in upcoming games. The Varsity Boys’ are 1-1 in games against Cape Atlantic League teams, and will be playing Cedar Creek at home on February 3.
