Paula Cibotti Accardi (’75-6th grade) has reconnected with ACS as a grandparent. Paula is thrilled that one of her grandsons, Daniel Accardi-Gonzalez, is in the 7th grade at ACS, where she has seen him grow academically and spiritually over the past year and a half.  In 1975, ACS only went up to the 6th grade. Paula attended for just one year and was one of four students in the 1975 6th grade graduating class. Paula was one year behind ACS alumnus Debby Zanes Reinwalds (’74) and they were childhood neighbors and friends in Ventnor. They are still friends today and Paula is grateful to Debby for introducing her to ACS and encouraging her to learn more about God. Paula graduated in 1981 from Atlantic City High School and got married in 1982. One of her three daughters is Angela Accardi-Gonzalez, Daniel’s mother. Paula worked for many years as a basic skills instructor/aide in the Linwood Public Schools and as a hairdresser on weekends. John (Tony) Polcini (’89). Congratulations to Tony for being elected in May 2022 to a four-year term as an at-large member of the City Council of Ocean City.  Tony may be the first ACS alumnus to be elected to serve in public office. “I count it a privilege that God blessed me with the opportunity to have this responsibility to serve the people of Ocean City, a place where I grew up, worked as a student, ran a business, and am raising my own family,” Tony said. “My goal is to make Ocean City the greatest family resort.” In addition to serving on City Council, Tony works as a salesman for Supplyitall Brady IFS in Vineland. He and his wife, Jennifer, have two sons, JD and Michael, and have been long-time active members of Mission Point Church in Somers Point.

Caleb will be working as an accountant at Liberty. Brianna and Caleb also welcomed their fourth child, Jocelyn, on January 14, 2023,  shortly before the move to Lynchburg. Baby Jocelyn joins siblings Brantley, 11, Maverick, 9, and McKenna, 2, and Brianna is looking forward to being a stay-at-home mom.

Byron Nelson (’09) is in his 4th year as the Boys’ Basketball Head Coach at the Atlantic County Institute of Technology in Mays Landing and is having another exceptional season, recently winning the championship in the Bill Osborn Memorial Bracket at the Boardwalk Basketball Classic in December in Wildwood. Coach Byron also teaches health and PE at ACIT. Byron and his brothers, Wayne and Andrew, were recently highlighted in a Press of Atlantic City column on January 13, 2023, which focused on how all three brothers are involved in coaching basketball in the Atlantic City area. Wayne is head coach of the Atlantic City High School boys’ basketball team and Andrew, who also attended ACS until the 8th grade, is Bryon’s assistant coach at ACIT. Byron graduated from Kean University in 2016 with a BS in communication recreation administration. Byron is married to ACS classmate Amy Vogel Nelson (’09) and they have two young sons, Cameron and Malakai.  Amy and Byron reside in Northfield and worship at Landmark Church in Ocean City.

Dara Brown Heston (’11). If you visit the Charity Center Thrift Store on Tilton Road in Northfield, you will likely be welcomed with a smile by Dara, who is the store manager. Since 2015, Dara has been working for the Atlantic City Rescue Mission, first as a chef and now as manager of the thrift store. Dara’s passion is helping people in need. She also enjoys using her artistic talents to paint murals in the U.S. and overseas. She and her husband, Mike, traveled to Nicaragua several years ago, where Dara painted several murals. They fell in love with the simpler life and saw opportunities to help. They now hope to return to Nicaragua in the future to live and pursue missions work with the youth. Dara’s plans to serve in Nicaragua were featured in a June 16, 2022 article in the Shore Local Newsmagazine, which was written by 2014 ACS graduate Sarah Fertsch, who is a staff writer for the publication. Dara and Mike live in Hammonton and are now expecting their first child in March 2023.

Trevor now leads the 6th-12th grade youth group that meets on Wednesday nights at Fresh Start Church in Egg Harbor Township and also leads the K-5th grade children’s group on Sunday mornings, a position in which he has been serving for 10 years.  Trevor is working on earning his Bachelor’s degree and during the day works at River Deck Marina in Sweetwater in the catering department. His heart is focused on serving in ministry and he has taken a Bible equipping class with Sojourn Community Church and done a pastoral internship with them. Trevor recently returned to ACS to be the guest speaker at Middle School Chapel on December 1, 2022, where he talked about the tactics and strategies of the devil and how he works tirelessly to make us question the truth in God’s Word. “The devil is the prince of lies and his native tongue is lies,” Trevor said in his remarks. “By identifying who our enemy is it will set you up on a pattern for redemption and joy.” Trevor’s mother, Linda Stiteler, is an ACS middle school teacher.

Staff Spotlight — Meet Our Seven New Early Education and Elementary Teachers

ACS is pleased to welcome seven new Early Education and Elementary teachers to our school family — Heather Aspenberg, Samuel Gottschall, Dena Johnson, Olivia Leach, Holly McCrosson, Jessica Samuels, and Michelle Wheeler. Several of these teachers have previously served at ACS in different roles, including as aides, substitute teachers, summer camp staff, and coaching the cheer team. What they all share is a passion for Christian education and a desire to show love and encouragement to their students and be a light for Christ.

Faculty member Heather Aspenberg

Heather Aspenberg — Heather is our new PreK3B teacher. She first came to ACS last year to work as an Early Education Center aide and continued working over the summer in the Early Ed Summer Program. Two close family members who had previously worked at ACS encouraged her to apply — her mother-in-law, Patty Aspenberg, and her sister-in-law, Christy. Heather holds a BA in hospitality from Johnson and Wales, but after working for several years as a general manager at Sonesta in Somers Point, she decided to change direction and pursue a job in education. “I’ve been working with children since high school and really feel that’s my calling,” Heather said. Her life verse, found in 1 Peter 4:8, serves her well in her new position. “It’s easy to think negatively, but we have to love everyone, show them grace and mercy, and pray for them daily,” Heather said.  Heather and her husband, Brian, live in Egg Harbor Township and worship at Fresh Start Church. They have three children, and their son, Liam, is in the 7th grade at ACS.

Faculty member Samuel Gottschall

Samuel Gottschall — Sam is a native of Piscataway, but relocated to South Jersey some three years ago after meeting his wife, Elyse, who has deep roots in the area. His father-in-law is Kyle Huber, the lead pastor at Greentree Church in Egg Harbor Township. Sam holds an BA in music from Moody Bible Institute and a MA in elementary education from Grand Canyon University. Prior to coming to ACS, Sam was a special education aide in the Ocean City School District, and he is bringing that experience into the classroom as a new 5th grade teacher. Sam said his favorite verse is Hebrews 4:12. “This verse captures how I want to live my life,” Sam said.  “It describes the Word of God as living and active, with the ability to create real change.” Sam and Elyse live in Egg Harbor Township and co-lead the children’s ministry at Greentree Church.

Faculty member Dena Johnson

Dena Johnson — Dena has returned to the ACS faculty this year after teaching middle school and high school Spanish from 2016-2020. In her new position, Dena is teaching 5th grade grammar, spelling, writing, and Bible. “I love languages and I’m just moving from Spanish to English,” Dena said with a smile. Prior to serving at ACS, Dena taught Spanish in the Wildwood Crest K-8 school for 12 years. A Bible verse that has been especially meaningful to her in the last decade is Psalm 25:5 — “Guide me in your truth, and teach me, for you are God by Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.” Dena also serves in ministry at Mission Point, where she has been a preschool Sunday school teacher for 22 years. Dena and her husband, Rob, have one son, Samuel, who is in 7th grade at ACS.

Faculty member Olivia Leach

Olivia Leach — Olivia is a new 2nd grade teacher. She gained valuable experience serving at ACS over the past two years, as a substitute teacher and as a staff member for summer Cougar Camp and the Early Education Summer Program. She is a native of Boyertown, PA and holds a BS in early education and a MS in special education from Cairn University. She lives in Linwood and her brother, Chase, is an ACS 10th grader. She attends Coastal Christian and is also part of the Morning Star Fellowship worship team. Her life verse is 1 Timothy 4:12 – “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.”

Faculty member Holly McCrosson

Holly McCrosson — Holly is a South Jersey native who grew up in Upper Township and graduated from Ocean City High School. She has known of ACS for some years and even considered transferring to it for her senior year of high school because she wanted to grow spiritually. In 2021, she earned her BA in elementary education from Southeastern University and decided to use her time at home during the COVID-19 pandemic to earn an MA in trauma informed education from Columbia College.  As a new kindergarten teacher, Holly said a Bible verse that is meaningful to her is 1 Corinthians 13:4-8. “I want people to feel God’s love when they see me, and especially the children that I have the privilege of working with this year,” Holly said. Prior to coming to ACS, she worked as a preschool teacher at Tomorrow’s World in Marmora. Her home church is Calvary Baptist Church in Dennis, but this fall she has become involved with a church plant in Pleasantville, Rise City Church, started by several alumni from Southeastern University.

Faculty member Jessica Samuels

Jessica Samuels — Jessica joins the ACS faculty as our PreK4B teacher, bringing a wealth of experience with young children. She worked for eight years as a PreK4 teacher at the Gospel of Grace Christian School, formerly located in Linwood, and has been a stay-at-home mom for the past six years with her two children, Saylor, 3, and Shiloh, 6, who started attending ACS this fall. A talented musician, Jessica loves incorporating music into the classroom. She has been a worship leader for over 17 years with Gospel of Grace Ministries in Egg Harbor Township. She also enjoys working in the ACS Early Education Center alongside her sister-in-law, PreK4A teacher Jennifer Kelley. “Christian education is a top priority for my husband, Jake, and I and originally I was planning to be a flex aide in the Early Education Center, but God had other plans and I have learned over the years that no matter what we think, God is in control,” Jessica said. A Bible verse that has been meaningful to her in the past three years is Isaiah 55:8, where the Lord declares – “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

Faculty member Michelle Wheeler

Michelle Wheeler — Michelle has been an ACS parent, cheer team coach, and preschool aide, and is now excited to join the faculty as our PreK2A teacher. Michelle said she loves being part of a school where children are learning about God and His Word every day to help them follow the right path for the rest of their lives. Michelle holds an Associates degree from Wilmington University, where she was also on the Wildcats Cheer Team. Michelle and her husband, Sean, live in Mays Landing and have two children, Adrianna and Sean, who attend ACS. “My children love to pray and I’ve seen them grow so much spiritually since attending ACS,” Michelle said. She said her life verse found in 1 Thessalonians 5:11 encompasses how she tries to be an encourager in her daily life, at home, in the classroom, and elsewhere. “We all have some sort of goal in life and maybe all someone needs is just a few words of encouragement to give them the push that they need,” Michelle said. She and her family worship at Fusion Church.

ACS Cheer Team Participates in Fresh Start “Night to Shine” Event

Fifteen members of the ACS Cheer Team participated in Fresh Start Church’s “Night to Shine” event on Friday, February 12, clapping and cheering as a car parade of special needs students passed by. The event was organized through the Tim Tebow Foundation.

“Our cheer team was thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of this event and to show the students in each car that they were loved and appreciated,” said cheer coach Kelly Flynn, who accompanied the team to the event held in Egg Harbor Township. Some 70 cars were part of the car parade that lasted two hours.

“Even though it was freezing cold and snow on the ground, our girls were enthusiastic and made sure they told each guest of honor how special they were,” Flynn said.  This was the first service project for the 21-member cheer team this year and Flynn said they have also been invited to be part of several Memorial Day Parades.

New Employee Spotlight: Computer Teacher & Library Media Specialist Rhapsody Hahn-Chaney

ACS welcomes new Computer Teacher and Library Media Specialist Rhapsody Hahn-Chaney

Rhapsody Hahn-Chaney is the new face in the ACS first floor computer lab, where she teaches students from kindergarten to high school to master the technology skills necessary to be successful in the classroom, in college, and the workplace. She also welcomes K-5 students to the school library each week, where they are developing a love of reading and are learning library research skills.

Mrs. Hahn-Chaney became the new computer teacher and library media specialist in January after Mrs. Diane Ash relocated with her family to Massachusetts. However, she is no stranger to ACS as she has been a proud and involved parent since 2015. Her son Caedyn is now in 5th grade and her son Gaebriel is in 3rd grade. But her real first day at ACS was in 1993 as a student in Mrs. Cassell’s kindergarten class. She attended ACS for most of her elementary years.

Hahn-Chaney holds a BS from the Art Institute of Philadelphia and is certified in Inbound Marketing and Digital Skills. Prior to coming to ACS, she was a content writer and manager for DotCom Global Media in Somers Point.

Hahn-Chaney, her husband, Marques, and their two sons live in Mays Landing and are active members of Fresh Start Church in Egg Harbor Township. She is currently working on redesigning the church’s website and recently enjoyed serving at Tim Tebow’s “A Night to Shine” event hosted at the church.

Hahn-Chaney takes her role as a teacher very seriously, describing herself as “an entrusted alternate” for the parents and grandparents who work hard so that their children and grandchildren can attend ACS. “I teach new skills, address bad days, give encouragement, inspire a thought process, share the love of Jesus, show a good example, and administer correction, all to the purpose of being an excellent stand-in for my students’ primary caregivers,.” Hahn-Chaney said.

Her favorite Bible verse is Proverbs 3:5-6. “In our world today, there is great emphasis on being really smart and getting more educated, but God is not impressed by academia,” Hahn-Chaney said. “He cares about our hearts. If I trust Him with all of my heart instead of trying to figure it all out, He will teach me what I need to know and show me what I need to do.”

Employee Spotlight – Mrs. Arzum Sanchez

Mrs. Arzum Sanchez, ACS Human Resources/Accounts Payable Manager

As the Human Resources/Accounts Payable Manager, Mrs. Arzum Sanchez knows every ACS employee by their first name and is always ready to answer a question about health insurance plans and other employee benefits. But in addition to fulfilling her tasks in the school’s Business Office, Mrs. Sanchez is a dedicated volunteer. Most recently, she served as the back stage manager of the school’s “Annie, Jr.” musical production, overseeing nearly 40 students during the after-school rehearsals and performances.

“I’m very passionate about serving others and giving of your time and talents to bless others,” Mrs. Sanchez said. Outside of ACS, she volunteers at Fresh Start Church, where she has attended for the past 13 years, and helps with fundraising efforts for KW Cares, a community give-back project of Keller Williams realty.

Prior to coming to ACS in November 2017, Mrs. Sanchez was working full-time as an investor/realtor with the Keller Williams Atlantic Shore office in Northfield. She still actively works in her real estate business, by appointment at night and on weekends. “I really just love working in real estate and helping people successfully make one of the most important financial transactions of their lives,” Mrs. Sanchez said.

Mrs. Sanchez, who is a native of Atlantic City, holds a BA in business from Stockton University and is also taking graduate courses when her busy schedule permits. She and her husband, Pablo, live in Egg Harbor Township and have four children — Elijah (26), Alexys (24), ACS 8th grader Haven, and ACS 7th grader Jayden. She is also a proud grandmother to 22-month-old Victoria.

“I’m so happy that my children are at ACS,” Mrs. Sanchez said. “I used to drive by the school and pray that our children could come here and God answered my prayers.”
