Varsity Basketball Player Olivia Chapman Honored for Pulling Down 500 Career Rebounds

ACS recognized and honored forward Olivia Chapman, a 4-year member of the Varsity Girls’ Basketball team, for pulling down 500 rebounds during her high school career with a special ceremony during the January 30 home game in the ACS gym.  Olivia grabbed her 500th rebound in the first two minutes of the game against Veritas Christian Academy.

Game play stopped temporarily as ACS cheerleaders, Olivia’s parents, Chuck and Donna Chapman, and fellow players celebrated her accomplishment. Olivia is just the 14th ACS Varsity basketball player in school history to reach this milestone.

During a brief ceremony,  Varsity Girls’ Head Coach Kaylee Breunig presented Olivia with a commemorative basketball and described her as “the heart and soul of the team.”

“I have been coaching Olivia for the past three years and I believe she is one of the most naturally, God-gifted athletes to play for our girls’ program,” Breunig said.  Olivia has been a starter on the ACS Varsity Girls’ team for the past three years. She has led the team in rebounds for the past two years and usually leads the team in steals each game.

ACS went on to beat Veritas Academy 49-32, with Olivia pulling down a total of 18 rebounds during the game.

Three Alumni Lady Cougars Basketball Players Made Their Mark on College Teams

Three alumni who played on ACS championship Lady Cougars basketball teams made significant contributions this season to their college teams — 2017 graduate Dakota Hitchner, 2015 graduate Ola Oguntuase, and 2016 graduate Candace Winkel (pictured above with ACS Athletic Director Pam Hitchner).

Winkel, a shooting guard on Clarks Summit University’s Women’s Basketball team, sank her 1,000th point on February 20 in the final game of regular season play in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. Athletic Director Pam Hitchner and Winkel’s family were at the game to celebrate this rare accomplishment at the college level.  Winkel’s team finished 4th in the conference and went on to the playoffs, but lost in the first round. Winkel is graduating this May with a degree in counseling and plans to earn her Masters in counseling at Clarks Summit.

Hitchner, in her second year as the point guard on Cairn University’s Women’s Basketball team, averaged 20 points a game and received Honorable Mention All-Conference in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. Hitchner, a junior, is majoring in physical education.

Oguntuase, a pre-med major at Jefferson University, has been a member of this strong Division 2 team since her freshman year. The team came in first place this year in the Central Athletic Collegiate Conference and was moving on to play in the NCAA Division 2 Championship tournament, but due to the Coronavirus pandemic the tournament games were recently cancelled. Oguntuase, who plays center, averaged five minutes of playing time this year and played strong in the final game of the regular season.

Varsity Boys’ Basketball Team Wins First Place in Division 4B at Nationals Tournament

The ACS Varsity Boys’ Basketball team capped off its championship-winning season in the Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference (TSCAC) with additional success on March 7, winning first place in Division 4B at the National Christian School Athletic Association’s national tournament in Ohio. The tournament features Christian high school teams from across the U.S. who are the best in their regions.

The Boys’ team lost its first tournament game to Bishop Walsh of Maryland, and then won the next two games, beating Thales Academy from North Carolina and Cumberland Valley from Pennsylvania. Overall, the ACS Boys’ team finished 17th out of the 52 boys’ high school teams that competed.

“As a senior, it was great to go out with a win for our school at Nationals,” said guard Ben Noble, who scored 34 points, had 13 assists, and 6 steals during the tournament. Several other players made strong contributions during the tournament. Mark Rosie, one of 3 seniors on the team, had 16 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists, and 6 steals. Senior forward Dan Roland had 24 points, 15 rebounds, 8 assists, and 2 steals.  Junior 6′ 8″ center Landon Shivers, who led the team in scoring with 65 points, had 30 rebounds, 9 assists, 10 blocks, and one steal.

Athletic Director Pam Hitchner said college coaches come to Nationals to check out the talent and she was pleased that a college coach from Kansas City spoke with Landon after watching him play at the tournament.

The Lady Cougars, who were seeded in Division 1, lost their first two games to Grace Christian from West Virginia and Calvary Christian from Maryland, and won their third game playing in Division 2 against Grace Christian from Illinois. Hitchner said the Lady Cougars ended in 3rd place in Division 2 and came in 7th overall out of 32 girls’ high school teams that competed.

“We’re very proud of our players and our coaches and for the enthusiastic school spirit of our students and families that carried our teams throughout this memorable season,” Hitchner said.

Varsity Cheer Squad Fires Up ACS Basketball Fans

A talented, high-energy 15-member cheerleading squad has been getting ACS fans fired up at home basketball games since early January. The squad will be cheering at three more games before the basketball season concludes — at this Friday’s JV and Varsity Girls’ games against Winslow; at the senior game on February 11; and at the semi-final playoff game on February 20. Come on out and cheer our Cougars on to victory!

The middle school and high school students on the squad, co-coached by staff members Kelly Flynn and Morgan Gibson, started practicing in November to learn nearly 50 chants, cheers, and half-time routines and to develop their tumbling, stunts, and pyramids.

“I love the way this squad really works together,” said Mrs. Flynn. “They help and support each other and not just when they’re cheering, but they’re building great relationships for life.” In addition to practicing or cheering at a game three to four days a week, the squad has also enjoyed their time together at team dinners and Bible studies.

The squad is led by two captains — 9th grader Lauren Kent and 8th grader Haven Sanchez. The other members of the squad are: Angelina Alexis, Isabell Alford, Ava Barberio, Leah Boyer, Victoria Dade, Rebecca DiMaio, Adrienna Foo, Grace Johnson, Paityn Kates, Autumn Loo, Savannah Schwenker, Makayla Tomlinson, and Stephanie Valdes.

Intramural Cheer Squad Makes Its Debut

Our largest-ever intramural cheerleading squad made its debut at our “White Out” home basketball game on January 31 before a capacity crowd in the ACS gym in Egg Harbor Township. The squad will lead cheers and do a half-time routine at two more upcoming home games — the senior game on Tuesday, Feb. 11 and the semi-final playoff game on Thursday, Feb. 20.

The 26-member squad of elementary girls from kindergarten to 5th grade, led for the fifth year by Coach Morgan Gibson, has been practicing weekly since late November, learning the chants and practicing tumbling and stunting.

“We’re so excited to see the growth in this intramural program since it began five years ago,” said coach Gibson. “This is the largest and most experienced squad we’ve ever had. Our 5th graders are the leaders and they have learned so much. We know they’re ready to move on next year to the Varsity squad.”

ACS Participating in Coaches vs. Cancer Campaign

ACS and other Christian schools in the Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference are combining their efforts to support families dealing with cancer with a “Coaches vs. Cancer” campaign. Donations and gate fees collected at the February 3 middle school and high school basketball home games and at the Tuesday, February 11 home JV and Varsity games against Gloucester County Christian School will be donated to the TSCAC campaign.

Special T-shirts are being worn by ACS basketball players and cheerleaders at these games to support the cause. Income from the sale of the T-shirts is also being donated to the campaign.

Athletic Director Pam Hitchner said the funds collected this year will go to two families who have family members undergoing cancer treatment. One family is affiliated with Calvary Academy. The other recipient will be Kevin Weeks and his family. Mr. Weeks, who resides in Egg Harbor Township, is 31 years old and has six children. He is related to two members of the ACS Varsity basketball team, Aaron and Sam Glancey.

Varsity Basketball Player Landon Shivers Honored for Grabbing 500 Rebounds

ACS recognized and honored junior forward Landon Shivers, a member of the Varsity Boys’ Basketball team, for achieving the significant milestone of pulling down 500 rebounds with a special presentation on Friday, January 10 in the ACS gym before the home game against Baptist Regional School.

Athletic Director Pam Hitchner presented Landon with a special commemorative game ball. Cougars Head Coach Dan Carney and Landon’s parents, Scott and Heather Shivers, were invited to join Landon court-side to be recognized for their contributions to Landon’s success.

The 6-foot, 9-inch Landon pulled down his 500th rebound on December 30 during the Doane Academy Tournament. He becomes one of just 12 basketball players in school history to reach this milestone during their high school career and his name will be added to a school banner hanging in the gym.

In Friday’s game, ACS beat Baptist Regional School 75-42, and Landon grabbed 14 rebounds and had two steals.
