Ocean City Veterans Surprise Preschool Class with Thank-You Gift of Johnson’s Popcorn

The preschoolers in Mrs. Kelley’s PreK4 class got surprise thank-you gifts this week from the veterans with VFW Post 6650 in Ocean City — tubs of caramel corn from Johnson’s Popcorn in Ocean City.

Each student and the teachers received a tub of caramel corn as a thank-you from the veterans.  The students in November had created special posters of appreciation for the veterans that were mailed to them ahead of Veterans Day.

Elementary Principal and Early Education Director Gail Alford said that due to the coronavirus pandemic, ACS could not hold its traditional Veterans Appreciation Chapel and invite area veterans to be honored at the chapel. “Instead of thanking them for their service in person, our preschool and elementary students wrote letters, created posters, and other craft projects that were sent to VFW and American Legion posts in the area,” Mrs. Alford said.

In a hand-written note, Post Commander Michael Morrisey wrote to the class: “Thank you for all of your support.”

Mrs. Kelley said she talked to her students about how showing kindness to others can often be returned back to you, like the saying — one good turn deserves another.  “This was such a wonderful surprise and we are all excited to open our tubs and start enjoying some delicious caramel corn,” Mrs. Kelley said.

Save The Date! Race for Education – October 30, 2020

Are you interested in helping Atlantic Christian School raise $30,000 in order to continue to provide a quality education and affordable tuition?

Would you be willing to give a minimal amount of time to help our school raise needed funds?

Here are some facts about this year’s Race:

  • Our Race for Education is a jog-a-thon, which will involve our PreK3-12th grade students walking and/or jogging around the school track for 30 minutes.
  • Our Race for Education will be held on Friday, October 30, 2020.
  • A “Kick-Off” packet of information about our Race for Education will be sent home with each PreK3-12th grade student on Monday, September 21.
  • “Remote learners” are encouraged to participate in our Race for Education as well. We will be sending parents suggestions on how to make this fundraiser a good wellness activity (e.g., walking and/or jogging in your neighborhood or at a local park).
  • The success of our Race for Education is based on sharing your child’s personal fundraising webpage address with potential sponsors by EMAIL, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or by sending individuals a sponsor mailer.
  • Potential sponsors may be family members, relatives, close friends, and neighbors. Don’t forget to include relatives and friends that live out of town and may not normally be able to contribute to other school fundraising efforts. Our Race for Education makes it easy for them to participate as well!
  • There are incentives and prizes to help promote the success of our Race for Education, which encourage student & classroom participation (e.g., Snack Passes, Dress Down Day Cards, “Five Below” Gift Cards, Class Outings, Lap Winner Certificates).
  • Our Race for Education is great fun for our students, no hassle to parents, and will fully benefit our school’s educational program!

Students Compete for Awards in Middle School Science Fair

Excitement was in the air at the Middle School Science Fair on March 6 in the ACS gym. A team of judges reviewed 50 projects and chose the top three entries from the 6th, 7th and 8th grades.

“We are very proud of the efforts of all of the students,” said Middle School science teacher Celine Melody, who organized the fair along with middle school teachers Caitie Lee and Amy Parker.  “It’s been a number of years since we held a Science Fair so this year was our relaunch,” Melody said. “We are looking forward to next year when we will  have some of our students move on to participate in the Jersey Shore Science Fair at Stockton University. ”

In the 6th and 7th grades, students worked in teams, while 8th graders prepared individual projects. The science project counted towards the student’s science grade.

High science teacher Dave Genter, who was one of 10 judges, commended the students for doing an excellent job on their oral presentations to the judges. “The students showed that they are developing their thought processes and scientific skills and have a keen curiosity about the world around them,” Genter said.

Following are the students who received the top Science Fair awards:

6th Grade

1st Place: Joshua Oke & Calvin Castello
2nd Place: Caden Kim & Noah Engle
3rd Place: Gabrielle Goodwin & Alexis Andjuar

Elementary Students Celebrate Dr. Seuss’ Birthday and the Love of Reading

ACS students in preschool and elementary celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday this week as part of Read Across America – a national campaign that focuses on motivating children to be lifelong readers. On Monday, students wore crazy socks to school; 12th graders read Dr. Seuss books to elementary students on Tuesday; and for Wacky Wednesday, teachers, students, and staff dressed up in colorful, mismatched clothes, wigs, and hats. Students also celebrated their love of reading by eating green eggs and ham, listening to secret readers, and reading books showcased in the ACS school library.
