Cheer Team Wins First Place at The ONE Cheer and Dance Finals in Virginia in Jr. High Intermediate Division

Three cheers for our ACS Cheer Team for winning first place for the second consecutive year at The ONE Finals cheer competition held April 1-2 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. The squad took first place in the School Cheer Division, Junior High Intermediate Level.

“This was an amazing accomplishment for this squad of 21 middle school and high school students to win the top spot again,” said head coach Morgan Gibson. “We faced a number of challenges this year and the team worked very hard to overcome them and be at the top of their game for every competition. I am very proud of them.” The team has been practicing since last September on improving their tumbling skills and learning routines, under the leadership of Gibson and assistant coach Michelle Wheeler.

Gibson said the team will now advance to compete for the national Grand Champion title in its Division. The ONE Finals are held in five different locations across the U.S. from March-May. A final, virtual round of competition to select the overall national grand champion in each division will be held in June. A video of the ACS Cheer Team competing in Virginia will be reviewed and scored again by a new panel of judges for that final competition. The winners will be announced in June.

The 21 members of the cheer team are: Ashlee Alford, Ava Barberio, Annalena DiMaio, Rebecca DeMaio, April Eaves, Gianna Flynn, Mackenzie Flynn, Makenzie Fresh, Emily Johnson, Grace Johnson, Abigail Kelley, Ava Lombardi, Autumn Loo, Kiara Loo, Tara McCorkle, Heather Milstead, Mia Morales, Madeline Neill, Chelsie Richards, Haven Sanchez, and Makayla Tomlinson. The manager is Jadelyn Maurer.

Thank you to everyone who supported the cheer team, including participating in the recent Applebee’s Flapjack fundraiser, and the parents who hosted team dinners and encouraged our cheerleaders through a season filled with challenges.

ACS Cheer Team Wins First Place in First Competition of 2023 Season, Seeking to Advance Again to The One Finals in April

The ACS Cheer Team, which earned the prestigious title of National Grand Champion last year in The ONE Finals Junior High Intermediate Division, has earned a first place win in this 2023 season and is setting its sights on advancing to compete again in The One Finals in April. The 20-member team, which is comprised of both middle school and high school students, has also moved up to compete this year in the Varsity Division.

At the January 14 ImpACT Cheer and Dance Challenge held at Brookdale Community College, the ACS Cheer Team earned first place in the Varsity Division, based on points. With this win, the team earned a partial bid to compete again in The ONE Finals in Virginia Beach on April 1-2.

The team is now preparing for its second ImpACT Cheer and Dance Challenge competition on February 5 at the RWJ Barnabas Arena in Toms River and will compete again on March 4 at Brookdale Community College. The goal is to gain additional wins and points to receive a full bid to The ONE Finals.

Head coach Morgan Gibson and assistant coach Michelle Wheeler have been working with the team on a regular basis since September to sharpen their skills and to learn a new competition routine. That new routine was performed for the first time for ACS fans during half-time at the January 20 home basketball games against Gloucester County Christian School.

Fans cheered and clapped as they watched the cheerleaders display their skills in building, tumbling, dance, and creativity. The team will continue to lead cheers and perform its half-time routine at upcoming Friday night Varsity home basketball games.

The 20 students who are participating on the competition cheer team this season are: Ashlee Alford, Ava Barberio, Annalena DiMaio, Rebecca DiMaio, April Eaves, Mackenzie Flynn, Makenzie Fresh, Kylie Jackson, Emily Johnson, Grace Johnson, Abigail Kelley, Ava Lombardi, Autumn Loo, Kiara Loo, Tara Mccorkle, Mia Morales, Madeline Neill, Chelsie Richards, Haven Sanchez, and Makayla Tomlinson.

ACS Cheer Team Named National Grand Champion in The ONE Finals School Cheer Division, Jr. High Intermediate Level

The ACS Cheer Team was recently named the National Grand Champion in The ONE Finals School Cheer Division, Junior High Intermediate Level. The exciting announcement, a first for any ACS cheer team in school history, was made on June 4.

A panel of judges chose the Grand Champions in several divisions and levels after holding a virtual round of competition where they reviewed video footage of the routines of the ACS Cheer Team and four other teams who had won in their category at regional competitions this spring. The ACS Cheer Team won first place in their category at THE ONE Cheer and Dance Finals held April 2-3 in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

“It was a whole new level of excitement, shock, and surprise when we heard Atlantic Christian School’s name announced as the winner,” said cheer team head coach Morgan Gibson, who watched the announcement while gathered with members of the cheer team and their parents. “Whether we had won or lost I was so proud of every middle school and high school student who participated this year and I can’t wait for the next season to begin.”

Gibson also said she was grateful to assistant coaches Kelly Flynn and Michelle Wheeler for the hundreds of hours they dedicated to making the team the best it could be and for building a sisterhood within the team.

Congratulations to the 26 members of the team, who will all receive championship jackets: Ashlee Alford, Isabell Alford, Ava Barberio, Annalena DiMaio, Rebecca DiMaio, April Eaves, Gianna Flynn, Mackenzie Flynn, Makenzie Fresh, Kylie Jackson, Abby Kelley, Rielly Kisielewski, Ava Lombardi, Autumn Loo, Kiera Loo, Ja’Niyah Martin, Jadelyn Maurer, Lydia McCarthy, Tara McCorkle, Heather Milstead, Sophia Puglisi, Chelsie Richards, Haven Sanchez, Isabella Santos, Makayla Tomlinson, and Anyae Welch. ACS will also receive a championship banner to hang in the school gym.

This year’s team did not have any students in 11th or 12th grade, which allowed the team to compete in the Junior High Intermediate Division, but Gibson expects the team to move up into the Varsity Division of competition next year.

Gibson also noted that they plan to hold tryouts for the Varsity competition team in the summer, likely in the last week of July. Details about the tryouts will be sent by email to school families and posted in the ACS Facebook Group “Stronger Together.” After the team is selected, the cheerleaders will practice once or twice a week starting in August. Gibson said she will also offer walk-on tryouts in September and October for students who newly enroll in the school.

Cheer Team Heading to National Competition in VA this Weekend, Thankful for Funds Raised from Bowling Night, Popcorn, Food Sales

The ACS Cheerleading Team is heading to THE ONE FINALS cheer competition in Virginia Beach, Virginia to be held April 1-3 and they are grateful to the many school families and friends who participated in King Pin Bowling Night or purchased bags of Chef Steve’s popcorn, baked goods, and walking tacos that helped raise over $5,000 in funds needed to underwrite their competition expenses.

“We are so excited to be representing ACS at this competition and we are blessed to have the support of our school families and friends in the community who have made our fundraisers a success,” said Morgan Gibson, head coach of the 23-member cheerleading squad of middle school and high school students. The cheer team received an invitation to THE ONE FINALS competition after winning first place on February 12 in Toms River at the ImpACT Competition, in the JV Intermediate Division.

Gibson said additional funds to support the team’s expenses will be raised from two after-school intramural cheer classes that will be offered this spring — one for PK3 to 1st grade students on Thursdays from April 7 to May 26, and one for 2nd to 5th grade students on Mondays from April 11 to May 23. The sign-up forms for these classes have been sent home and are on the ACS website.

ACS staff member Arzum Sanchez, who has helped organize the cheer team fundraisers, said close to 150 people attended the bowling night on March 18 and while there, they also purchased tasty home-made baked goods. “The bowling alley was packed with ACS families and friends and everyone was laughing and having a great time,” Sanchez said.

Help our cheer team get to Nationals by purchasing a bag of Chef Steve’s Popcorn or come out on March 18 for a family bowling event at King Pin Bowling in Egg Harbor Township.

The cheer team of 23 middle school and high school students received an invitation to THE ONE FINALS competition after winning first place on February 12 in Toms River at the ImpACT Competition, in the JV Intermediate Division.

“Our team is thrilled to have this exciting and first-ever opportunity to compete at the national level,” said Head Coach Morgan Gibson. “We know that we can count on the support from our school families and friends to help us raise the funds we need for the trip.”

Gibson said the fundraising goal is $10,000 to cover transportation, housing, food, registration fees, and other related expenses for the cheerleaders and coaches to attend the competition.

Online registration is preferred, but not required to participate.

In addition to the popcorn sale and bowling outing, the cheer team will also be raising funds by holding two after-school intramural cheerleading clinics — one for PK3 to 1st grade students on Thursdays from April 7 to May 26, and one for 2nd to 5th grade students on Mondays from April 11 to May 23. The sign-up form for these classes will be sent home at the end of next week.
