Varsity Softball Team Wins Conference Championship, Baseball Team Finishes in 3rd Place; ACS Receives MVP, Coach of Year, and All-Star Awards

The Varsity Girls Softball Team won the Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference championship on June 3, beating The Pilgrim Academy 20-10, in a game that ended early in the 5th inning under the 10-run rule. The win went to starting pitcher Ava Nixon, and strong, steady play from at least eight Lady Cougars who were red hot at the plate, hitting singles, doubles, and triples throughout the game.

An enthusiastic crowd of ACS parents and friends cheered on the Lady Cougars from the stands, including members of the Varsity Baseball Team, who had won their Tournament Consolation Game earlier in the day, beating Calvary Academy 8-3 to finish the season in 3rd place. Both games were played at the Stockton University athletic fields.

“We’re grateful to all our players and coaches for making this such a memorable season,” said Athletic Director Pam Hitchner. “We never gave up and aimed to play our best in every game and the hard work paid off.”

The Lady Cougars finished the regular season with a 14-2 overall record and were 9-1 in the conference. ACS entered the playoffs tied for first place with The Pilgrim Academy. The Lady Cougars beat Gloucester County Christian School 12-4 in the semi-final playoff game to advance to the TSCAC championship game.

The Varsity Boys Baseball Team had an overall record of 9-7 at the end of the regular season and were in 3rd place in the conference with a 6-5 record. ACS lost 7-6 to The Pilgrim Academy in the semi-final playoff game to advance to the consolation game in the final tournament.

After the tournament games, TSCAC awards were announced and for the second consecutive year junior shortstop Evangelina Kim was named the TSCAC Softball MVP and Varsity Softball Coach Dara Kimmerley received the TSCAC Softball Coach of the Year Award. Ten ACS players were named All-Stars — six from our championship-winning softball team and four from our 3rd place-finishing baseball team.

The six ACS Varsity Girls who were named All-Stars were: Evangelina Kim, Paige Noble, and Taylor Sutton (1st team); and Kaia Barbour, Alli Lushina, and Ava Nixon (2nd team). The four ACS Varsity Boys named All-Stars were: Charlie Costello and Robby Barberio (1st team); and Seth Phillips and Adam Schlundt (2nd team).

Congratulations to all our coaches for a memorable season — Varsity Baseball Head Coach Carl Phillips, an ACS 2017 alumnus, and assistant coaches Robert Barberio and Brendan Keller, and Varsity Softball Coach Dara Kimmerley and assistant coaches Lori Pearson and Richie Jackson.

High School, Middle School Students Receive Awards for Athletic Participation, Leadership, and Team Success

Seniors who received the Billy Robinson Award and the Cougar Award.

High school and middle school students who played on an ACS sports team during the 2022-2023 school year received recognition for their participation, leadership, and athletic abilities at Athletic Awards Programs on June 2 and 5.

At the High School Athletics Awards event on June 2, it was a time to celebrate and reflect on a distinguished year of achievement as Athletic Director Pam Hitchner gave an overview of each team’s accomplishments. Hitchner also took time to thank and recognize ACS parents and volunteer Terry Vogel, and her husband, Paul, for their 28 years of service in support of ACS Athletics. In particular, Mrs. Vogel had overseen concession sales at home athletic games, helping raise thousands of dollars for ACS athletic programs.

Athletic Director Pam Hitchner recognized and thanked Paul and Terry Vogel for their 28 years of volunteer service to support ACS athletics.

The evening culminated with the announcement of special recognition awards. Seniors Cruz Lewis and Paige Noble were chosen by the Athletic Department to be the recipients of the 2023 Billy Robinson Award, which recognizes one high school boy and one high school girl for significant achievement, Christian testimony, and athletic ability. Robby Barberio, Maddie DeNick, and Reyna Lewis received the Cougar Award, which is given to seniors who have demonstrated outstanding Christian character, leadership, responsibility, and commitment in the area of athletics. The five athletes are pictured above.

There was a lot to celebrate in the achievements of the various Varsity teams. In the fall sports season, the Varsity Boys Soccer team, under head coach Chris Lopez, finished the regular season in second place and advanced to play in the Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference Championship match against King’s Christian School. The game ended in a tie of 2-2, with goals scored by Chase Leach and Malachi Vasquez. The game then went into double overtime, with both teams still tied. King’s Christian won in penalty kicks 4-2 and ACS finished the season in second place.

The Lady Cougars Varsity Soccer Team, under head coach Carly Witherow, finished in 3rd place in the regular season and lost in the conference consolation game to Calvary Academy. Ten ACS soccer players were named TSCAC All-Stars. Witherow, in her 11th year as head coach, was recognized for being the longest serving soccer coach and most winning soccer coach, leading ACS teams to 5 TSCAC Championships and twice being named TSCAC Coach of the Year. She is stepping down as head coach this year.

In winter sports, both the Varsity Boys and Girls Basketball Teams were the TSCAC Champions, winning hard-fought battles in their February 25 championship games held in the ACS gym. The No. 1-seeded Lady Cougars had an undefeated season, and the No. 2-seeded Varsity Boys’ Team pulled off an upset, beating No. 1-seeded Pilgrim Academy 54-45, a team that had been undefeated all season. Eight ACS players were named TSCAC All-Stars, senior Paige Noble received the 2023 TSCAC MVP Varsity Girls’ Basketball Award, and Varsity Girls’ head coach Kaylee Breunig received the 2023 TSCAC Varsity Girls Basketball Coach of the Year Award.

In the spring, the Varsity Girls Softball Team was tied for first place in the regular season, and went on to win the TSCAC Championship Title on June 3, beating Pilgrim Academy. The Varsity Boys Baseball team finished in third place in the regular season and won their TSCAC consolation game, beating Calvary Academy, finishing the seasons in third place. For the second consecutive year, 11th grade shortstop Evangelina Kim received the conference MVP Award in softball and Varsity Girls Softball head coach Dara Kimmerley received the Softball Coach of the Year Award. Ten ACS Varsity Baseball and Softball players were named TSCAC All-Stars.

The Varsity Cheerleading Team, under head coach Morgan Gibson and assistant coach Michelle Wheeler, made history again this year. For the second consecutive year, the Cheer Team was named the  National Champions in The ONE Varsity Intermediate School Cheer Division. The ACS Cheer Team had earlier won first place in its category at The ONE Cheer and Dance Finals held April 1-2 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. In both the April and Finals rounds of competition, the scoring was based on execution, technique and degree of difficulty, as well as the ability to inspire a crowd.

The track program continued to grow this year. The Cross Country Club, in its third year, competed in meets with King’s Christian School and at the Homecoming 5K Run. Over 90 middle school and high school students participated in the spring track program, with ACS high school boys’ and girls’ track teams winning first place at the TSCAC Track Meet hosted at ACS on May 11. The teams also competed at the Mid-Atlantic Christian School Association (MACSA) Invitational Track Meet at Messiah University.

During the program, the head coaches of the various teams presented certificates and special awards to their players, including the Coaches Award, Most Valuable Player, and Most Improved Player. The coaches participating in the program were: Girls Soccer — Carly Witherow; Boys Soccer — Chris Lopez; Girls Basketball — Kaylee Breunig and Dara Kimmerley; Boys Basketball — Drew Carney; Girls Softball — Dara Kimmerley; Boys Baseball — Carl Phillips; and Cheer — Morgan Gibson (head coach) and Michelle Wheeler (assistant coach).

Middle School Athletic Awards

At the Middle School Athletic Awards program on June 5, students who participated in soccer, basketball, baseball, softball, and track were recognized and honored. Athletic Director Pam Hitchner thanked the coaches for another outstanding year of competition in the Atlantic Cape Junior High League, of which ACS is a member. The middle school boys’ teams came in first place in soccer, basketball, and baseball and the middle school girls had winning records in soccer and softball. In the spring, the Middle School boys’ and girls’ track teams came in first place in the TSCAC Track Meet.

During the Middle School program, Hitchner also thanked and recognized four new first-year head coaches for their efforts — Becky Pineo (girls soccer), Silas Nixon (boys soccer), Jen Domsic and Sydney Pearson (girls basketball and softball). The other head coaches of Middle School teams, who presented certificates to their players and spoke about their accomplishments, were boys basketball coach Josh Clark and boys baseball coach Charlie Costello.

Middle School Girls Soccer Coach Becky Pineo and her team.

During his remarks, Middle School Boys Soccer Coach Nixon noted that coaching 25 players at different skill levels was the most difficult task he had ever undertaken, but they worked hard and came together as a team that ended up placing first in the league with an undefeated record. Coach Pineo emphasized the importance of displaying Christian character on the athletic field. “Playing sports doesn’t prove our character, but reveals our true character,” Pineo said.

Coaches Domsic and Pearson praised the athletes on both the Middle School Girls Basketball and Softball Teams for working hard to acquire new skills and abilities. “We started from scratch with some of our players, but we persevered and fought hard, and even in our losses we kept fighting,” Pearson said. She noted that the Middle School Girls Softball Team finished with a winning record of 7-3 with all new players.

The Middle School Boys Basketball Team had a remarkable season, with 23 straight victories and finishing in first place in the league. Coach Clark said the word “perseverance” best described the team. “This was a very special team that I was very proud to coach,” Clark said. “They never gave up and always showed up for every game and every practice.”

The Middle School Boys Baseball Team, under Coach Costello, finished the season tied for first place in the league. Coach Costello noted that while success on the athletic field is something to enjoy and be proud of, that the most important goal is to fear the Lord, quoting Proverbs 9:10 — “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”

ACS Middle School, High School Athletes Sweep Conference Track Meet

The first place High School Girls Track Team.

Ninety middle school and high school students competed in the Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference Track Meet on May 11 and swept the event — with all four ACS teams finishing in first place ahead of teams from five other regional Christian schools.

The athletes and several hundred spectators enjoyed warm, sunny skies for the day-long event, which ACS hosted on its campus for the 16th year.  The High School Girls won 9 first place medals and had the highest number of points (63) and the High School Boys placed first with 53 points and also won 9 first place medals. The Middle School Boys placed first with 53 points and won 8 first place medals and the Middle School Girls won first place with 46 points and received 6 first place medals.

“I’m very grateful for the outstanding efforts of the entire ACS family that all worked together, using their various gifts and talents, to make this track meet a success,” said Athletic Director Pam Hitchner, who organized the meet.  The other schools participating in the meet were: Ambassador Christian Academy, Calvary Christian Academy, Gloucester County Christian School, King’s Christian School, and The Pilgrim Academy.

Several athletes set new school records:

  • 12th grader Cruz Lewis set an ACS high school boys and TSCAC record in the 200 meter, running 23.3 seconds, and also set an ACS and TSCAC record in the 400 meter, running it in 52.7 seconds.
  • In the 4 x 100 high school boys relay, the team of 11th grader Noah Gibbs, 12th grader Sam Glancey, 12th grader Cruz Lewis, and 11th grader Malachi Vazquez set a new record with a time of 47.1 seconds.

  • 8th grader Kiara Loo set the middle school girls 400-meter record with a time of 1:06.5, which also tied the high school girls record.

A large volunteer team of students, alumni, and parents helped manage the 23 track and field events in the meet, serving as timers, working at the scorer’s table, and cooking and serving at the concessions stand. In particular, Hitchner recognized and thanked several individuals for their efforts: PE teachers Kaylee Breunig and Josh Clark; faculty member Dan Vazquez; alumni parent Larry Martin and ACS parent Charlie Costello; substitute teacher Mike Bohs; Jeff Wolf, who served as the “Clerk of Course,” and PTF President Terry Vogel, who headed up the concessions stand that raised funds to support the ACS Athletic Department.

We’re No. 1! ACS Varsity Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball Teams Both Capture 2023 Conference Championships

The ACS Varsity Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball Teams are the 2023 Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference Champions! Both teams won hard-fought battles on February 25 in their championship games, which were held in the ACS gym. The No. 1-seeded Lady Cougars remained undefeated, beating Gloucester County Christian School 48-43, and the No. 2-seeded Varsity Boys’ Team pulled off an upset, beating No. 1-seeded Pilgrim Academy 54-45, a team that had been undefeated all season. It was a night to celebrate!

This is the fourth consecutive year that our Varsity Boys’ Team has brought home the championship trophy. The Lady Cougars last won the TSCAC championship in 2021. ACS advanced to the championship games by handily winning their semi-final matches on February 23 against King’s Christian School.

Congratulations to Varsity Boys’ head coach Drew Carney, assisted by Dan Carney and ACS 2013 alumnus Ben Chapman, and to Varsity Girls’ head coach and ACS 2012 alumnus Kaylee Breunig, assisted by Dara Kimmerley, for their hard work and dedication. This was an exciting and memorable season.

Eight ACS players were named TSCAC All-Stars for the 2023 season and were recognized at the end of the championship games. The four Girls’ Varsity All-Stars are — Evangelina Kim and Paige Noble (1st team), Reyna Lewis (2nd team), and Becca Kelley (honorable mention). The four Boys’ Varsity All-Stars are — Noah Stokes (1st team), Caleb Vogel (2nd team), and Charlie Costello and Noah Gibbs (honorable mention).

ACS also received two other special recognition awards from the conference. Senior Paige Noble received the 2023 TSCAC MVP Varsity Girls’ Basketball Award. She was one of the team’s leading scorers and a force to be reckoned with both on offense and defense. Paige will be attending Cairn University in the fall.

Coach Breunig received the 2023 TSCAC Varsity Girls Basketball Coach of the Year Award. This is the second time she has received this award. The first time was in the 2017-2018 season when she was in her first year as head coach of the Lady Cougars.

During this season, Coach Breunig was also honored for earning her 100th win on February 15 when the Lady Cougars defeated Oakcrest 54-24 in a nonconference game. In her 6th year as head coach, Coach Breunig has now led the Lady Cougars to two TSCAC Conference championships and five first place finishes in the regular season. She also received the TSCAC Coach of the Year Award in the 2017-2018 season, her first year as head coach. Coach Breunig is a 2012 ACS alumnus who was a strong varsity player and team leader during her four years on the Lady Cougars.

In the Championship varsity girls’ game, junior guard Evangelina Kim led the team in scoring with 20 points and pulled down 8 rebounds. Senior forward Reyna Lewis scored 16 and also had 8 rebounds. Senior guard Paige Noble had 7 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 steals. Freshman forward Gianna Flynn scored five and Flynn and junior forward Becca Kelley each had five rebounds.

In the Championship varsity boys’ game, three players were the top scorers — junior Noah Gibbs, with 15 points, sophomore Noah Stokes with 14 points, and senior Caleb Vogel with 13 points. Gibbs and Stokes also led the team in rebounds, each pulling down 12, and were strong on defense, with Gibbs grabbing 3 steals and Stokes getting 2 blocks. A key contributor to the team’s success in the final quarter of the game was consistently sinking their baskets at the foul line.

At the conclusion of the games, the ACS teams did the traditional “cutting down of the nets,” which each player and coach cutting a piece of the net to take home as a souvenir of their victories.

Student Spotlight — Fellowship of Christian Athletes Shares Testimony of Senior Cruz Lewis from Summer Camp Experience

ACS 12th grader Cruz Lewis was a featured athlete the week of September 19 in a Fellowship of Christian Athletes South Jersey email sent out to hundreds of FCA friends and supporters in which he shared the impact that a summer FCA sports camp had on his spiritual growth. Cruz will also be sharing his testimony at an FCA Fields of Faith event on October 12 at the Lower Cape May Regional football field, to be held from 6-8 p.m.

Cruz has been a stand-out track athlete for ACS and received a scholarship from the ACS Athletic Department last spring to attend a one-week FCA sports camp at Kutztown University in June to receive special training in track. ACS student Jayden Sanchez, then a 9th grader, also attended the sports camp with Cruz.

In the email, Cruz shared his testimony about how the FCA camp impacted his walk with Christ. Following is his testimony:

“Going to FCA camp at Kutztown University was for sure a life changing and life altering experience for me.  I have never been away to camp and thought it was going to be something that I would not enjoy. I was proven wrong upon arrival when I was greeted by the most welcoming people, and that really showed me that they were there to further the kingdom of God through the people that were coming through those doors. My walk with Christ was not the strongest, as I was goin through some hard times going into camp, but, being around my brothers in Christ and learning together really brought me out of my dark time and helped me along.

“I believe I was placed there for a reason. God had a plan for that time at camp. In leaving Kutztown, I have brought with me compassion and love for all of the people around me. I want to make an impact for Christ and I have tried to lead those around me in a more positive way to attend the one goal in mind, and that is to further God’s kingdom, not for personal gain but for personal and for others growth and the growth of the Kingdom.

“I was truly blessed by the experience of going to Kutztown University for FCA Camp and I look forward to going next year and being the best leader I can be.”

Athletic Director Pam Hitchner said she was very happy to see Cruz growing in his walk with the Lord and has posted his testimony on a bulletin board near the Athletic Department office in the gym.  Hitchner noted that Cruz has been a four-sport athlete throughout his middle school and high school years at ACS. At the May 2022 Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference track meet, Cruz excelled in several events — winning 1st place in the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.5; placing 2nd in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:13, and placing 3rd in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.1.

Varsity Girls’ Softball Team Wins Championship Title, Varsity Boys’ Baseball Finishes in 2nd Place

The ACS Varsity Girls’ Softball Team won the Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference title on Saturday, May 28, defeating Pilgrim Academy 15-8 and finishing the season undefeated with a 12-0 record. The ACS Varsity Boys’ Baseball Team faced off against Pilgrim Academy in the title match and lost 6-3, finishing the season in 2nd place.

In the Championship Softball game, the Lady Cougars powered back from a 5-0 deficit in the 3rd inning to finish strong. Sophomore shortstop Evangelina Kim was on fire on offense, going 3 for 3 with a triple and a double. Senior outfielder Ang Eggie had two hits, including a double. Freshman pitcher Ava Nixon pitched a complete game with two strikeouts and she also singled.

After the victory, Kim was awarded the TSCAC Most Valuable Player award and head coach Dara Kimmerley, in her 8th year at the helm, received the TSCAC Coach of the Year Award. Junior 1st baseman Maddie DeNick, Kim, and freshman catcher Taylor Sutton were selected as first team TSCAC All-Stars. Nixon and junior 3rd baseman Paige Noble were named to the second team All-Stars.

“This was such a special and memorable season,” Kimmerley said. “Our pitcher and catcher were both freshmen and we had just one senior on the team, but everyone worked very hard and never gave up. This was a team effort and I’m so proud and thankful for each and every player.”

The Boys’ Varsity Baseball team came within striking distance of a win at the top of the 7th inning in their championship match against Pilgrim Academy.  The bases were loaded, with two outs, and sophomore pitcher John Hannum hit a long ball to centerfield, but it was caught, ending the rally.

In the conference awards ceremony, head coach Gus Casey received the TSCAC Coach of the Year Award and five ACS baseball players were named TSCAC All-Stars. The All-Stars, pictured below from left are: freshman outfielder James Papanikolaou (2nd team),  freshman shortstop/pitcher Charlie Costello (1st team), junior 3rd baseman Rob Barberio (2nd team), senior catcher Eric VonColln (1st team), and sophomore pitcher John Hannum (1st team).

The Lady Cougars also paid a special tribute to a young softball player named Parker Henderson in Yukon, Oklahoma who is battling leukemia. The team wore a #45 on their arms in support of Parker.  Thanks to a connection facilitated by catcher Taylor Sutton’s  parents, the Lady Cougars reached out to Parker during the season, sending her a care package, including a softball signed by the team, and letters of encouragement.  Photos of the team after the game, showing the players with the #45 on their arms, were sent to Parker as well.

We’re so proud of the hard work and exceptional effort from all our players throughout the season. Thank you to Varsity Baseball Head Coach Casey and Varsity Softball Head Coach Kimmerley for your dedication and commitment to excellence.

ACS Middle School, High School Athletes Sweep TSCAC Track Meet

Congratulations to the 70 ACS middle school and high school students who competed in the Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference Track Meet on Thursday, May 12 and earned medals and top team honors. All four ACS teams — the High School Boys’ and Girls’ teams and the Middle School Boys’ and Girls’ teams — finished in first place with the highest number of points earned among the teams from six other regional Christian schools who participated.

The day-long event, held under cloudy skies, saw ACS receive 64 first place medals — the Middle School Girls earned 15, the Middle School Boys earned 14, the High School Girls earned 20, and the High School Boys earned 15. 12th grader Caeli Barbour set a school record in the high school girls’ 3200 meter, with a time of 14:17.

ACS relay teams won 9 out the 12 relay races. In field events, ACS athletes also excelled. At the middle school level, Natalia Flores won first place in the long jump, reaching 13 feet, 4 inches, and Skyler Shivers won first place in the shot put, throwing the ball 25 feet. At the high school level, 12th grader Destiny Brewer won first place in the long jump, with 14 feet, 3 inches, and 11th grader Evan Pearson won first place in the shot put, throwing the ball 35 feet, 2 inches.

“I’m very grateful for the outstanding efforts of the entire ACS family that all worked together, using their various gifts and talents, to make this track meet a success,” said Athletic Director Pam Hitchner, who organized the meet. This is the 15th year that ACS has hosted the Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference track at its campus.  The other schools participating in the meet were: Abundant Life Academy, Ambassador Christian Academy, Cumberland Christian School, Gloucester County Christian School, King’s Christian School, and The Pilgrim Academy.

Several middle school and high school athletes also made significant contributions to their teams. 7th grader Kiara Loo scored 9 points for her Middle School Girls’ team and 8th grader Mikayla Cubbage and 7th grader Natalia Flores each scored 8 points. For the Middle School Boys’ team, 7th grader Micah D’Anna scored 14 points and 8th grader Erik Preisner scored 8 points. On the High School Girls’ team, 11th grader Reyna Lewis led the team with 15 points, 12th grader Caeli Barbour scored 11 points, and 11th grader Eden Wilson scored 9 points.  For the High School Boys, 9th grader Jayden Sanchez scored 11 points, 12th graders Aaron Glancey and Cole Lewis each scored 10 points, and 11th grader Cruz Lewis scored 9 points. Collectively, the three Lewis siblings scored 34 points over the course of the meet.

A large volunteer team of students, alumni, and parents helped manage the 20 track and field events in the meet, serving as timers, working at the scorer’s table, and cooking and serving at the concessions stand. In particular, Hitchner recognized and thanked several individuals for their efforts: PE teacher Kaylee Breunig, who served as Hitchner’s assistant;  alumni parent Larry Martin, who oversaw the scorer’s table; substitute teacher Mike Bohs, who served as the official starter of all the races; Jeff Wolf, who served as the “Clerk of Course.” and PTF President Terry Vogel, who headed up the concessions stand that raised funds to support the ACS Athletic Department.

ACS Launching New Track Club This Week, Athletes to Compete in Several Meets

A new Track Club for students in grades 6-12 is launching this week, with 45 students expected to gather for the first after-school practice on Wednesday, March 30. Athletic Director Pam Hitchner, who is heading up the club, said ACS athletes will be competing in at least four track meets that are scheduled for this spring, including the Mid-Atlantic Christian School Association track meet on April 26 and 27 at Messiah University in Pennsylvania.

“Our goal is to introduce another sport at ACS and give our students who have gifts and talents in different areas a chance to develop and grow those abilities,” Hitchner said.  PE teacher Josh Clark and faculty member Drew Carney, who has experience as a distance runner, will be assisting Hitchner in training the athletes in the club. ACS parent Harold Scott is also donating a javelin and will be training students for competition.

Hitchner said a new long jump runway and sand pit were installed on the campus this week, relocated to an area parallel to the ACS track, thanks to material and services donated by Ralph Clayton and assistance from ACS staff.  The track club members will also be competing with new ACS track shirts, made possible in part by gifts from several donors.

ACS will host a dual track meet on May 17 against King’s Christian School and plans are in discussion for ACS athletes to compete in meets with schools in the Atlantic Cape Junior High League. ACS will also be hosting the annual Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference track meet on May 12 and throwing a javelin will be added to the meet.

There is a $50 athletic fee for participation in the Track Club and practices will be weekly on Wednesdays. Hitchner said students who play on an ACS baseball or softball team can also participate in the Track Club and will not have to choose one or the other.

We’re No. 1! ACS Varsity Boys’ Basketball Team Wins TSCAC Championship; Varsity Girls Finish in 2nd Place

The ACS Varsity Boys’ Basketball team won the 2022 Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference Championship game on Saturday, February 26, beating Pilgrim Academy 51-42 before a standing-room-only crowd at the Gloucester County Christian School gym in Sewell. This is the third consecutive year that our Varsity Boys’ team has brought home the championship trophy.  The Lady Cougars , who finished in first place in the regular season, lost a heart-breaker by one point — 40-39 — to Gloucester County Christian School in the girls’ championship game on Saturday.

Four ACS players on the Varsity Boys’ team were named TSCAC All-Stars and presented with medals hanging from a green lanyard — Sr. guard #3 Aaron Glancey (1st team), #2 Sr. Devin Tridente and #11 Jr. Caleb Vogel (2nd team), and #33 Soph. Noah Gibbs (Honorable Mention). All four All-Stars made significant contributions to the team during the championship game.  Glancey had 11 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and five steals.  Vogel led on offense with 16 points, and Gibbs and Tridente both scored 10 points.

The Lady Cougars Basketball team received their trophy for earning 1st place in the regular season of the Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference.

On the Lady Cougars team, four players were named TSCAC All-Stars and received special medals — #3 Jr. Paige Noble (1st team), #24 Jr. Maddie DeNick and #12 Soph. Evangelina Kim (2nd team), and #11 Jr. Reyna Lewis (Honorable Mention), who was sidelined on Saturday after sustaining an injury in the 3rd quarter.

The Varsity Boys’ championship game started off with Glancey, the team’s strongest player on offense and defense, picking up two fouls in the first two minutes and having to take the bench. The team kept the score close until Glancey could re-enter the game in the 2nd quarter. Vogel then started making his mark on offense, scoring 8 of his 16 points during that period.  Just before the clock ran out at halftime, Tridente hit a huge three-pointer to push the ACS lead to 9 going into the break.

Throughout the 3rd quarter, ACS turned up the intensity on defense, consistently forcing Pilgrim to scramble and commit multiple turnovers. ACS was able to hold Pilgrim forward Connor Storr, who later earned the TSCAC MVP award, to just 2 points in the quarter and 15 points for the game, after he had averaged over 20 points per game during the regular season. Taking a 14-point lead in the 4th quarter, ACS kept control of the game and made multiple foul shots down the stretch to finish with the 51-42 victory.

We are grateful to Coach Drew Carney and assistant coaches Ben Chapman and Dan Carney for an exciting season and for the many hours of hard work that helped develop a Varsity Boys’ team that steadily improved and persevered.  Thank you also to Lady Cougars head coach Kaylee Breunig and assistant coach Dara Kimmerley for building up a winning team that had no seniors and not one returning starter from last year. Congratulations to the coaches and players for a memorable season.  Photo credit: Mia Liggins, Arzum Sanchez.
