We’re No. 1! ACS Varsity Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball Teams Both Capture 2023 Conference Championships

The ACS Varsity Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball Teams are the 2023 Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference Champions! Both teams won hard-fought battles on February 25 in their championship games, which were held in the ACS gym. The No. 1-seeded Lady Cougars remained undefeated, beating Gloucester County Christian School 48-43, and the No. 2-seeded Varsity Boys’ Team pulled off an upset, beating No. 1-seeded Pilgrim Academy 54-45, a team that had been undefeated all season. It was a night to celebrate!

This is the fourth consecutive year that our Varsity Boys’ Team has brought home the championship trophy. The Lady Cougars last won the TSCAC championship in 2021. ACS advanced to the championship games by handily winning their semi-final matches on February 23 against King’s Christian School.

Congratulations to Varsity Boys’ head coach Drew Carney, assisted by Dan Carney and ACS 2013 alumnus Ben Chapman, and to Varsity Girls’ head coach and ACS 2012 alumnus Kaylee Breunig, assisted by Dara Kimmerley, for their hard work and dedication. This was an exciting and memorable season.

Eight ACS players were named TSCAC All-Stars for the 2023 season and were recognized at the end of the championship games. The four Girls’ Varsity All-Stars are — Evangelina Kim and Paige Noble (1st team), Reyna Lewis (2nd team), and Becca Kelley (honorable mention). The four Boys’ Varsity All-Stars are — Noah Stokes (1st team), Caleb Vogel (2nd team), and Charlie Costello and Noah Gibbs (honorable mention).

ACS also received two other special recognition awards from the conference. Senior Paige Noble received the 2023 TSCAC MVP Varsity Girls’ Basketball Award. She was one of the team’s leading scorers and a force to be reckoned with both on offense and defense. Paige will be attending Cairn University in the fall.

Coach Breunig received the 2023 TSCAC Varsity Girls Basketball Coach of the Year Award. This is the second time she has received this award. The first time was in the 2017-2018 season when she was in her first year as head coach of the Lady Cougars.

During this season, Coach Breunig was also honored for earning her 100th win on February 15 when the Lady Cougars defeated Oakcrest 54-24 in a nonconference game. In her 6th year as head coach, Coach Breunig has now led the Lady Cougars to two TSCAC Conference championships and five first place finishes in the regular season. She also received the TSCAC Coach of the Year Award in the 2017-2018 season, her first year as head coach. Coach Breunig is a 2012 ACS alumnus who was a strong varsity player and team leader during her four years on the Lady Cougars.

In the Championship varsity girls’ game, junior guard Evangelina Kim led the team in scoring with 20 points and pulled down 8 rebounds. Senior forward Reyna Lewis scored 16 and also had 8 rebounds. Senior guard Paige Noble had 7 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 steals. Freshman forward Gianna Flynn scored five and Flynn and junior forward Becca Kelley each had five rebounds.

In the Championship varsity boys’ game, three players were the top scorers — junior Noah Gibbs, with 15 points, sophomore Noah Stokes with 14 points, and senior Caleb Vogel with 13 points. Gibbs and Stokes also led the team in rebounds, each pulling down 12, and were strong on defense, with Gibbs grabbing 3 steals and Stokes getting 2 blocks. A key contributor to the team’s success in the final quarter of the game was consistently sinking their baskets at the foul line.

At the conclusion of the games, the ACS teams did the traditional “cutting down of the nets,” which each player and coach cutting a piece of the net to take home as a souvenir of their victories.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Varsity Basketball Teams Heading to TSCAC Championship Round Saturday After Winning Semi-Final Playoff Games

Congratulations to our Varsity Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball Teams for winning their semi-final playoff games on Thursday night to secure a spot in the Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference Championship Games on Saturday, February 26. We are proud of you!

The Thursday night playoff games, played in the ACS gym before a crowd of fired-up fans, got underway with the Lady Cougars facing off against Cumberland Christian School and defeating them 56-13. Jr. Paige Noble led the team on offense with 18 points and four assists, and also pulled down five rebounds. Other key players in the game were Jr. Maddie DeNick, who scored 11 points and had 7 rebounds, and Soph. Evangelina Kim, who had 8 points and 6 steals.

The Varsity Boys’ game followed after, with ACS beating King’s Christian School 46-39 in a hard fought battle.  ACS trailed King’s Christian by 2 at half-time and by as many as 8 to start the 3rd quarter. But ACS went on an 18-0 run from the end of the 3rd quarter through the start of the 4th quarter to seize control of the game. Soph. Noah Gibbs and Jr. Caleb Vogel carried the team down the stretch on offense, scoring 17 of the team’s 24 second half points. Vogel finished with 13 points and Gibbs with 12. Other high scorers were Sr. Devin Tridente with 12 points and Sr. Aaron Glancey with 8 points.

The Lady Cougars, under head coach Kaylee Breunig, finished in first place in the regular season, with a 7-1 record, and are advancing to the TSCAC championship final for the eighth straight year. They will play Gloucester Country Christian School on Saturday at 3 p.m.  The Varsity Boys’ team, under head coach Drew Carney, placed second in the regular season, with an 8-2 record, and will play Pilgrim Academy in the Championship final at 5 p.m. Both games will be played at Gloucester County Christian School, which is located at 151 Golf Club Road in Sewell.

ACS Retires Basketball Jersey of 2010 Alumnus Jodi Kelley Crane, First 1,000-Point Scorer on Varsity Girls’ Team

The ACS Athletic Department recognized and honored 2010 alumnus Jodi Kelley Crane in a special ceremony on Friday, February 4 to retire her #5 Varsity Girls’ Basketball jersey. Athletic Director Pam Hitchner praised Jodi for her outstanding contribution to the Varsity Girls’ Basketball Program from 2007 to 2010 and for becoming the first player on the Varsity Girls’ basketball team to score 1,000 points. The ceremony was held after the Varsity Girls’ home game against King’s Christian School.

Hitchner, who coached Jodi when she played on the Varsity Girls’ Basketball team, noted that her nickname on the court was “Machine Gun Kelley,” for her rapid fire ability to sink the ball in the basket, especially from the 3-point range.

Jodi’s parents, siblings, nieces, and many other family members were on hand to celebrate with Jodi on this special occasion. Two of Jodi’s former teammates — ACS Varsity Girls’ coach Kaylee Breunig (’12) and former Assistant Varsity Girls’ coach Maryah Coleman (’11) — also congratulated her and posed for a photo.

Hitchner said Jodi is only the second ACS basketball player to have their jersey retired.  In 2007, ACS retired the #10 jersey of Varsity Boys’ Basketball player Billy Robinson (’87), 20 years after he made his mark as an extraordinary high school basketball player in both New Jersey and the nation. In his junior year, Billy led the nation in scoring with 39.8 points per game and went on to score 2,695 points by the end of his senior year at ACS.  Billy is now in his 13th season as head coach of Milligan University’s Men’s Basketball program.

Hitchner said there are plans to hang a new banner in the ACS gym to recognize the two players and their jerseys, and in the future, any player who scores over 2,000 points will have their jersey retired.  Photo credit: Mia Liggins.

 

Athletes, Family Members Honored at Basketball Senior Night on March 1

ACS honored its 12 Seniors on the Varsity Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball Teams and on the Cheer Team and their parents in a special ceremony on March 1 before the start of the last regular season home games against Cumberland Christian School. We look forward to seeing our seniors play in the upcoming Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference playoff games, which were postponed to the week of March 15, with the championship final games to be played on Saturday, March 20 in the ACS gym.

The Seniors girls honored were: Olivia Chapman, Kami DeNick, Kayla DeNick, Shelby Einwechter, Bekah Kimmerley, Katherine Kong, Sydney Pearson, Chloe Vogel, and Cristen Winkel. The Senior boys honored were: Joshua Jacoby, Malachi Green, and Jacob Rosie.

Both ACS teams went on to win their games and several seniors put in an outstanding effort. In the Varsity Girls’ game, which ended 50-23, forward Olivia Chapman had 10 steals, 8 rebounds; forward Sydney Pearson had 16 points and 10 rebounds; and point guard Cristen Winkel scored a season high 24 points and had 6 assists. In the Varsity Boys’ game, which ended 67-42, point guard Malachi Green scored a career high 33 points, had 8 rebounds, and 5 steals. Forward Jacob Rosie had 6 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals.

The ACS teams will be playing in the TSCAC playoff games next week, which were originally scheduled for the week of March 1.  The Varsity Girls, who are undefeated and in 1st place in the conference, will play in the semi-final playoff game (opposing school to be determined) and the Varsity Boys, who are in 3rd place, will play in the quarter-final game against Cumberland Christian. The dates and times of the playoff games are still to be determined, but the championship final games will be held on Saturday, March at the ACS gym. All games will be livestreamed. ACS Varsity Basketball Teams Heading into Playoffs Next Week as Pep Rallies Promote School Spirit

The ACS Varsity Girls’ and Boys’ Basketball Teams are heading into the playoffs next week in strong positions to advance to the Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference championship finals on Saturday, March 6, which will be held in the ACS gym.  At pep rallies on Thursday, February 25, ACS students and staff cheered for the players and showed their school spirit, proudly displaying our school colors of green and white. The students also enjoyed dressing up all week in various, themed costumes for Spirit Week.

The ACS Varsity Girls’ are undefeated and in first place in the TSCAC, with an 8-0 record, and the Varsity Boys’ team has a 6-2 record in the TSCAC and is ready to fight its way into a spot in the championship finals. Both teams won their games at Pilgrim Academy on Thursday, February 25 and have two more conference games to play — on Friday, February 26 against King’s Christian School, and on Monday, March 1, against Cumberland Christian School.

Athletic Director Pam Hitchner said the Varsity Girls’ team with its undefeated record has secured its spot in the semi-final playoff game on Thursday, March 4 in the ACS gym. The Varsity Boys’ playoff schedule will not be determined until after Monday’s final regular season game. The quarter-final round of games will be held on Tuesday, March 2, but Hitchner said it is not yet clear which teams will be playing in that round. Hitchner also said that attendance at the games in the ACS gym is still limited due to COVID-19 room capacity limitations, but ACS families and supporters can watch the games online as they will be live-streamed on the ACS YouTube Channel.

Exciting Winter Sports Season Gets Underway for Basketball and Cheer Teams – Watch ACS Games Live on YouTube

An exciting winter sports season is underway as high school and middle school basketball  and cheer teams showed off their skills at several games during the week of January 25. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, no spectators are allowed in the stands, but fans can watch the games live on YouTube.

Athletic Director Pam Hitchner said that home games of both the middle and high school basketball games are being live-streamed on the ACS YouTube channel and away games will also be available to watch online using links provided by other schools.

All links will be posted on the ACS website on the “High School Athletics” page and the ACS link is available below. Anyone who would like to get email notifications of live-streamed ACS home games when they are about to air on YouTube can do so by subscribing to the ACS YouTube channel.

The game schedules for middle school and high school are also posted on the ACS website under the “Athletics” tab and will be updated regularly as needed.

Hitchner said she was very pleased that over 70 middle school and high school students are participating on the various athletic teams, and even more came out for tryouts. “There is a lot of enthusiasm for our winter sports and we are taking every precaution to keep everyone safe and healthy throughout the season,” Hitchner said. “We will really miss hearing the cheers of our fans in the stands at the games, but we know they will be rooting for us from home.”

High School Season

The Varsity Boys’ and Girls’ teams won their January 25 scrimmage games against Buena High School and then played the following day at home against Calvary Academy, posting their first Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference wins of the season. The Varsity Girls beat Calvary 52-9 and the Varsity Boys played strong to beat Calvary 61-53. The JV Boys tied their game 37-37.

On Wednesday, the ACS teams traveled to Sparta, NJ to play Veritas Christian Academy in a non-conference game. The ACS Varsity Girls lost a close match in overtime to Veritas 57-50, and the Varsity Boys lost their game as well, 43-56. The two schools will face off again this weekend at ACS on Saturday, January 30. Four games will be played on Saturday — JV Girls at 2 p.m.; Varsity Girls at 3:30 p.m.; JV Boys at 5 p.m.; and Varsity Boys at 6:30 p.m.

Middle School Season

The Middle School Boys’ and Girls’ teams won their first games of the season on January 26 away at Pilgrim Academy. The MS Boys, under head coach Lee Martin, beat Pilgrim 53-37, and the MS Girls, under head coach and ACS alumnus Grant Miller (’07), beat Pilgrim 31-19. The MS Boys team lost its January 28 away game at Life Center, 52-64.

The 13 members of the Middle School Boys’ Basketball team are: John Cook, Charlie Costello, Ethan Costello, Micah D’Anna, Judah Dawkins, Jayden Dixon, CJ Ford, Caden Kim, Chase Leach, Joseph McCrae, Jayden Sanchez, Adam Schlundt, and Justice Settles.

The 15 members of the Middle School Girls’ Basketball team are: Alexis Andujar, Angela Awad, Sophia Capito, Katie Colella, Sophia Costello, Gianna Flynn, Kiera Frontino, Lucy Huff, Sophia Johnson, Taylor Murphy, Ava Nixon, Nadia Pearson, Skyler Shivers, Taylor Sutton, and Anyae Welch.

Cheer Season

Twenty-three middle school and high school students are part of this year’s cheerleading squad, co-coached by staff members Mrs. Kelly Flynn and Mrs. Morgan Gibson. Practices got underway in early December to prepare for the season. The squad is cheering at home games to support our middle school and high school teams. The intramural cheer squad for students in 1st-5th grade, which practiced in November and December, is also planning to cheer at several upcoming home games, dates to be determined.

Varsity Basketball Player Sydney Pearson Honored for Scoring 1,000 Career Points

ACS recognized and honored senior forward Sydney Pearson, a member of the Varsity Girls’ Basketball team, for scoring 1,000 points during her high school career with a special presentation during the January 26 home game in the ACS gym. Pearson scored her 1,000th point with a layup in the first quarter of the first conference game of the season against Calvary Academy.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, spectators were not allowed to watch the game in the gym, but after sinking her layup, game play stopped temporarily as ACS cheerleaders, Sydney’s parents, and fellow players celebrated her accomplishment. Sydney is just the 6th ACS Varsity Girls’ basketball player in school history to reach this significant milestone.

Athletic Director Pam Hitchner presented Sydney with a special commemorative game ball. Sydney’s parents, Doug and Lori Pearson, and Varsity Girls’ Basketball Coach Kaylee Breunig, posed for photos with Sydney.

ACS went on to win that game 52-9, with Sydney scoring 12 points in the game.

Varsity Boys’ Basketball Team Brings Home TSCAC Championship Trophy; Varsity Girls’ Lose Close Championship Match

The undefeated Varsity Boys’ Basketball team received the TSCAC Championship Trophy at the conclusion of the February 22 Tournament in the ACS gym.

Congratulations to our Varsity Boys’ basketball team for winning the Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference championship on February 22, beating the #2-seeded King’s Christian School 47-32. The ACS Boys, under head coach Dan Carney, finished the regular season undefeated in the conference and brought home the championship trophy for the 10th time in school history.

Our Varsity Girls’ basketball team was seeded in first place entering the championship tournament with a 12-0 regular season record. The team lost a hard-fought match in the championship game 45-41 to King’s Christian School. During the Tournament awards ceremony, the Varsity Girls’ team, under head coach Kaylee Breunig, was recognized for its outstanding regular season and received a TSCAC trophy.

The Varsity Girls’ Basketball Team received the TSCAC regular season 1st place trophy.

“We were thrilled to have the opportunity to host the Championship Tournament in the ACS gym and we are proud of every player on our Boys’ and Girls’ teams who always gave 110% whenever they stepped onto the court,” said Athletic Director Pam Hitchner. At the conclusion of the tournament, each member of the winning Varsity Boys’ team and their coaches climbed up a ladder to cut off a piece of the basketball net as a special keepsake, a tournament tradition.

The Varsity Boys’ and Girls’ teams will travel to Ohio next week to compete in a 3-day national tournament that concludes March 7. The tournament is organized by the National Christian School Athletic Association and features teams from across the U.S. who are the best in their regions.

“We’re very grateful to our school families and friends who filled our stands at home games and during the Championship Tournament, encouraging our athletes to do their best,” Hitchner said. “We also appreciate the parents and other volunteers, led by long-time ACS parent Terry Vogel, who worked in our Cougar Den concession stand throughout the season, helping raise funds for our athletic program.”

Hitchner also thanked and recognized the assistant coaches and team managers for their important contributions to a memorable season — Varsity Girls’ assistant coach Dara Kimmerley; Varsity Boys’ assistant coaches Drew Carney, Ben Chapman, and Paul Jones; and team managers Ashleigh Martin and Alex Wang.

Undefeated Varsity Basketball Teams Gearing Up for TSCAC Playoffs Next Week

Our undefeated Varsity Boys’ and Girls’ basketball teams are heading next week into the Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference playoffs. The Boys’ team, with an overall record of 17-9, enters the playoffs in first place after an undefeated (12-0) regular season in the conference. The Varsity Girls, 20-6 overall, also enter the playoffs in first place with a 12-0 record in the TSCAC. Both teams have a bye in the quarter-final round before hosting the semi-final games here at ACS on Thursday, February 20. Come out and cheer for our Cougars!

The Girls’ playoff game on Feb. 20 will begin at 5:00 p.m., followed by the Boys’ game at 6:30 p.m. ACS will be playing the winners of the quarter-final playoff games on Tuesday, February 18. There is a small conference gate fee for the Feb. 20 games – $1 per student, $2 per adult, or $5 per family.

The playoffs will conclude on Saturday, February 22 and ACS is hosting the consolation and championship games. The Girls’ consolation game will be at 1:00 p.m. and the Boys’ consolation game at 3:00 p.m. The Girls’ Championship Game will be at 5:00 p.m. and the Boys’ Championship Game at 7:00 p.m. The gate fees for the final games on Saturday will be $2 per student, $3 per adult, or $10 per family.

Athletes and Family Members Honored at Senior Basketball Night

ACS recognized and honored four senior players on the Varsity Girls’ and Boys’ basketball teams, two team managers, and their parents in a special ceremony on Tuesday, February 11. The ceremony was held between the Girls’ and Boys’ Varsity home games against Gloucester County Christian School.

Athletic Director Pam Hitchner introduced the team members and read notes of special thanks to each player written by Varsity Boys’ Coach Dan Carney and Varsity Girls’ Coach Kaylee Breunig. The following seniors players and managers were honored: Emily Kelley, Ashleigh Martin (Varsity Girls’ team manager), Ben Noble, Dan Roland, Mark Rosie, and Ping-yu (Alex) Wang (Varsity Boys’ team manager).

Varsity Basketball Teams Undefeated in TSCAC With Second Half of Season Ahead

The Varsity Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball teams are off to a stellar start, with undefeated records of 5-0 in the Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference (TSCAC) and five weeks left in the second half of the season. “Both teams are doing great and playing better each time they’re on the court,” said Athletic Director Pam Hitchner. “We’re also very pleased with the enthusiasm of our school families and friends who are filling the bleachers at our home games and helping energize our players.”

The Lady Cougars, led by Kaylee Breunig in her 3rd year as head coach, started the season strong, winning the Delco Christian Tip-Off Basketball Tournament on December 7, with high-scoring guard Cristen Winkel receiving the tournament MVP award, both firsts in school history. The Girls’ team played well again in the December 27-28 Boardwalk Classic in Wildwood, losing to Absegami High School and then beating Cedar Creek High School.

The Varsity Boys’ team also got off to a great start in December at the Doane Academy Tournament, winning 2 out of 3 games and placing third in the tournament. Dan Carney is in his 4th year as head coach, assisted by Drew Carney, Ben Chapman, and Paul Jones.

The ACS teams have a challenging schedule, playing teams both in the TSCAC and in the Cape Atlantic League. The Varsity Girls currently have a 3-1 record against area high schools in the Cape Atlantic League and will face ACIT, Egg Harbor Township, Pleasantville, and Winslow Township in upcoming games.
