Our high school soccer pre-season got underway on August 22, with two weeks of practices before the Varsity Boys’ faced off against Life Center Academy in Westampton, NJ on September 1, losing a close 3-2 non-conference game against a nationally-ranked team. Middle School Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer Tryouts will be on September 8, 9, and 12, from 3:00-5:00 p.m.

In the September 1 game against Life Center, 10th grader Chase Leach scored both ACS goals and 12th grader Jake DeNick defended strong in the goal. The Varsity Boys will play in their first home game on Friday, September 9 against Abundant Life Academy of Nutley, NJ. Faculty member Chris Lopez is in his first year as the Boys’ Varsity Head Coach, leading a talented team that finished in second place last season in the Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference (TSCAC).

Both the Varsity Boys’ and Girls’ teams will play at home against American Christian School from Rockaway, NJ on September 12.  ACS alumnus Carly Witherow (’08) is in her 8th year as the Varsity Girls’ Head Coach, with five TSCAC championships under her belt.

ACS welcomes two new coaches for the Middle School teams — Silas Nixon for the Middle School Boys’ team and Becky Pineo for the Middle School Girls’ team. Varsity Soccer Teams Lose Close Matches in TSCAC Championship Tournament; Nine Players Named Conference All-Stars

The ACS Varsity Soccer Teams fought hard in the Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference Championship tournament on Saturday, November 6, but fell just shy of victory. The Varsity Boys lost 2-1 to Pilgrim Academy in the Boys’ Championship Final, finishing the season in 2nd place. It was the first time since 2012 that the Varsity Boys’ team had advanced to the Championship Game. The Varsity Girls lost their Consolation Game 3-2 to King’s Christian School, ending the season in 4th place.

In the Boys’ Championship game, Pilgrim Academy took an early lead, scoring its two goals in the first 13 minutes of the game. ACS answered in the first half with a goal by 12th grader Aaron Glancey, off an assist from 9th grader Chase Leach. The ACS defense fought hard in the second half, stopping any further goals by Pilgrim. On offense in the second half,  ACS took the upper hand and had numerous shots on goal, but failed to score.

In the Girls’ Consolation Game, ACS was down 3-0 to King’s Christian School at half-time, but came back in the second half to score two goals, by 10th grader Alicia O’Donnell and 11th grader Eden Wilson. Strong defense by ACS in the second half prevented King’s Christian from scoring again, but ACS was unable to score as well.

A large group of enthusiastic fans cheered for our Cougars and showed their appreciation for the hard-working athletes during the tournament closing ceremony. Nine ACS players were named TSCAC All-Stars and received medals for their achievement — Aaron Glancey and Manny Johnson (1st team); Devin Tridente and Chase Leach (2nd team); Maddie DeNick, Paige Noble, and Eden Wilson (1st team); Reyna Lewis and Alicia O’Donnell (2nd team).

We’re proud of every ACS Varsity athlete who competed this fall and for the great memories of an exciting season. Thank you also to Coach Carly Witherow and Coach Andres Tortola for encouraging and training our athletes to do their best and to honor God both on and off the field.

Alumni, Students, Families Celebrate Homecoming 2020

Alumni, students, and families gathered at the ACS campus on Saturday, October 17 for Homecoming 2020, which featured two exciting Varsity vs. Alumni Soccer games, the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen and presentation of their court, and the dedication of the newly installed artificial turf Varsity Soccer Field. The campus grounds were creatively decorated for fall, including pumpkins painted by students in the high school art classes to celebrate the 50th anniversary of ACS.

Congratulations to our 2020 Homecoming Court — Homecoming King JJ Jacoby, Homecoming Queen Chloe Vogel, Homecoming Princesses Sydney Pearson and Rachel Whisman, and Homecoming Prince Jeremiah Engle. The King and Queen and waved to the crowd as they took the traditional ride around the track in a converted jeep, driven by school parents Michael and Kelly Flynn.

The soccer games against Life Center had to be postponed. Instead, the ACS Varsity teams faced off in two very competitive and fast-paced games against an ACS Men’s Alumni Team and an ACS Women’s Alumni Team. Prior to each game, ACS parent Karen Noble led the crowd in the singing of the National Anthem.

The Alumni Men won their game 2 to 1, with Ben Noble (’20) and Tommy Tillis (’10) scoring and assisting for the Alumni team and sophomore Jake DeNick scoring the ACS Varsity team’s goal. The ACS Varsity Women beat the Alumni 5 to 2. Sophomore Eden Wilson scored three goals, and senior Chloe Vogel and sophomore Paige Noble each scored one. For the alumni, Abigail Vogel (’18) assisted her sister, Sarah Vogel Laury (’11), on one goal, and DJ Hitchner (’17) assisted her sister, Carly Harper Witherow (’08), on the second goal.

Between the games, ACS dedicated the new artificial turf soccer field and recognized supporter Ralph Clayton for spearheading and funding the project. He was presented with the game ball, which was later signed by the players on the Varsity teams.

The concession stand was busy throughout the day helping raise funds for ACS Athletics, and students, staff, and alumni enjoyed competing for Chick-fil-A gift cards in a 50th anniversary Homecoming Court Photo Contest, with contestants having to guess the names of the Homecoming Kings and Queens going back to the first Court in 2004. Later that evening, our high school students enjoyed a fun and safe night out at the Homecoming Dance.

Thank you to Athletic Director Pam Hitchner for putting together a family friendly event, assisted by PE teachers Ben Chapman and Kaylee Breunig. We are also grateful to the dedicated volunteers who helped with food, concessions, set-up, and clean-up, including Laura Einwechter, Karen Noble, Ray Picking, Heather and Scott Shivers, Paul and Terry Vogel. The Homecoming festivities will get underway with Open Volleyball outdoors for our alumni, families, and friends from 10 a.m. to noon and 3-on-3 half-court basketball games on our new outdoor basketball court from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Some additional fun activities are being added to Homecoming as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of ACS this year.
