Support Our Race for Education – Friday, October 25

Our 2019 Race for Education fundraiser is just around the corner — on Friday, October 25. Students from PreK3 to the 8th grade will be jogging, walking, skipping, and running to complete laps around the school track during a one-hour time frame. Sponsor a student or a class and help us reach our $27,000 goal. The funds raised will be used this year for classroom and art supplies, playground and PE equipment, Chromebooks and other technology upgrades, and much more.

Letters from our students to prospective donors are being mailed out this week. We welcome grandparents and other family members to volunteer on the day of the Race, which will start at 9:00 a.m., or just come out and cheer on our students.

In addition to sponsoring a gift or pledge per mile, there are two additional sponsorship opportunities — to be a Classroom Sponsor for a $200 donation or an Event Sponsor for a $400 donation. There are two “Class Grand Prizes” this year — one for an Early Ed/Elementary class and one for a Middle School class — for raising the most donations (based on the class average).

Please help make this year’s Race for Education our best ever! For any questions for to sign up to volunteer, please contact Princesa (PJ) Santos, our Assistant Director of Development and Communication, at 609-653-1199, ext. 302 or psantos@acseht.org.

ACS is partnering with NextStep Planning and Education to launch this new program that will give ACS high school students an opportunity to explore their career interests by working in local businesses. To date, NextStep has over 25 certified business partners. Parents had their first opportunity to learn about the new program during the 6th-12th grade Back-to-School Night on September 24 and a representative of NextStep provided information at a table in the school foyer.

The job shadowing program will supplement the work of our new guidance coordinator, Mrs. Kelly Schlundt, in helping prepare ACS students for college and careers after graduation. NextStep is also providing its services to several other area high schools including Absegami, Cedar Creek, and Oakcrest.

Please contact Upper School Principal Meg McHale with any questions about the NextStep program at 609-653-1199, ext. 309 or mmchale@acseht.org.

ACS to Implement New, Computer-Administered Learning Assessment Tool for K-8 Students

ACS will be using a new assessment tool called NWEA Map Growth during this school year that will replace the TeraNova as a standardized test. Teachers in grades K-8 will begin administering this new MAP Growth test on a computer or Chromebook during the weeks of September 30 to October 11.

Elementary School Principal Gail Alford sent an email to parents on Friday, September 27 explaining the new assessment tool. The test will be given three times during the school year — October, January, and May — and will measure reading, math, and language skills. The test results will be quickly available to teachers to help them identify each student’s strengths and weaknesses, tailor classroom lessons, and set goals for students.

Following each testing period, parents and guardians will receive a Family Report showing a summary of their child is performing academically.

PreK3 Students Enjoy Pajamas and Teddy Bear Day This Week

Our PreK3 students wore pajamas to school on Wednesday and brought in their own teddy bear or other favorite stuffed animal. It was all part of this week’s learning-focused theme — bears.

Storytime with Goldilocks and the Three Bears

All week long, Mrs. Costello and Mrs. VanAcker organized fun, creative bear-themed activities to help make learning interesting and interactive. Class activities included sorting bears by color and size, counting bears, reading the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and learning the sound of the letter “B.”

5th Graders Lead Elementary Chapel on How to React When Jealousy Comes

When jealousy comes — pray, remember the good things God has done for you, and rejoice in the blessings that others received. This was the core message that Mrs. Kiefer’s 5th grade students shared in Elementary Chapel on Friday, September 27, which included showing a video of skits they had created. The chapel’s message was building on the 2019-2020 spiritual development theme that encourages our students to be transformed by the renewing of their mind — to think Biblically and thereby live differently.

Over the past week, the 5th graders wrote and acted out four original skits that depicted real-life scenarios when jealousy can occur. In the skits, the students put into practice the best, Biblically-based ways to react and set aside those jealous feelings. Mrs. Kiefer took videos of the skits, which were shown during chapel.

5th grader Mia Morales also used her artistic talents to create a poster, which has been distributed to hang on the walls in our 1st to 5th grade classrooms as important reminders of how God wants each of us to cope with jealousy.

Christian Country Music Recording Artist Daryl Boyer Challenges ACS Students to Find Their Identity in Christ

Rising Christian country music recording artist, Daryl Boyer, was the featured speaker at the 6th-12th grade chapel on Friday, September 27, where he shared his testimony about how he found his identity in Christ and led the students in a powerful time of worship, including him performing one of his original songs entitled “King Jesus.”

Boyer’s message to the students and to several dozen ACS parents who also attended the chapel, focused on the importance of finding our worth and identity in Christ and not in our own accomplishments or achievements.

Boyer described how he spent the early part of his life in Nashville seeking to build a career as a musician, but had not committed his life to Christ. He was struggling with alcoholism and depression.

“I had wrapped up my entire identity in succeeding and making it in the music industry and when things didn’t go the way that I had planned, I started spiraling downward,” Boyer said. When he finally cried out God, Boyer said he was delivered “on the spot” from his addiction to alcohol and turned his life over to Christ.

Since then, Boyer has written and recorded two original songs that have hit the #1 spot on the Christian Music Weekly Christian Country chart. His most recent #1 single — “Running Down Revival” ‘– was released in March and his first #1 single — “Never Looking Back” — held the top position on the CMW Christian Country chart for 24 weeks in 2017-2018.

Boyer now also has a special link to ACS. He is a new ACS parent. His wife, Steffanie, is the new After-Care Director, and their daughter, Leah, is enrolled in the 7th grade.

6th-12th Grade Back-to-School Night — Tuesday, Sept. 24; Great Turnout for Thursday Night’s Elementary Back to School Night

Next Tuesday, September 24, is our Middle School and High School Back-to-School Night. We hope to see all of our parents who have students in grades 6-12 come out for this very informative inter-active event that will begin at 6:30 pm in the school’s gymnasium and will end at 8 pm.

The evening will begin with a general assembly where important information will be presented about upcoming school events, athletics, clubs, after-school enrichment classes, fundraising and volunteer opportunities, and more. Parents will then get to walk in their student’s shoes – following his/her class schedule, visiting different classrooms, meeting the teachers, and hearing a synopsis of the class goals.

We had a great turnout of close to 200 parents on Thursday who filled the gym bleachers for our Elementary Back-to-School Night. The evening gave parents a chance to get better acquainted with our teachers and to learn more about the specific educational goals at each grade level from kindergarten to the 5th grade. The evening began in the gym with an overview of school events and programs from Elementary Principal Gail Alford and other school staff. Parents then made their way to the classrooms to meet the teachers. Parents enjoyed sitting at their child’s desk and had a chance to see artwork and other classroom work on display inside and outside the classrooms.

Representatives of the new mobile app Xspero, the Parent Teacher Fellowship, and the Cub Scout Pack 389 were in the school lobby to meet with parents and answer questions about their programs.

High School Students Challenged to Grow Closer to God at September Retreat

What is God saying to you and what do you need to do about it? ACS high school students were challenged to answer that question throughout the two-day Spiritual Emphasis Retreat on September 16 and 17 at America’s Keswick.

“The retreat is a time of growing closer to God and each other and we were pleased to see this take place in so many ways this week,” said Upper School Principal Meg McHale.

Retreat speaker Travis Lee

During morning and evening sessions, Travis Lee, founder of the Travis Lee Band, led a time of prayer, worship, and devotions, after which students broke into smaller COMPASS groups, where our high school teachers facilitated discussion focusing on how to apply God’s Word to their lives.

Building a Tower of Babel with graham crackers

Students also participated in several friendly class competitions, including an Amazing Race game based on solving clues related to Biblical knowledge. In one contest, students competed to build the tallest “Tower of Babel” using graham crackers and frosting and without speaking to each other during the process. Some students also explored a team-building challenge course set up on America’s Keswick grounds that included setting up wooden planks between raised platforms and walking across them.

In free time, the students found plenty of ways to bond through a variety of indoor and outdoor recreational activities, including archery tag, canoeing, racquetball, swimming, tennis, volleyball, and more.

The Middle School Spiritual Emphasis Retreat will also be held at America’s Keswick this year on Thursday, October 10. Mrs. McHale will be emailing information to parents soon regarding signing a permission slip and submitting payment for the retreat.
