Dynamic Group of 94 Golfers Participate in 2023 Cougar Classic Golf Tournament

A dynamic group of 94 golfers turned out on May 16 to participate in the ACS 2023 Cougar Classic Golf Tournament at McCullough’s Emerald Golf Links in Egg Harbor Township. The tournament was paired with the Legacy Gala on May 12 to help raise funds for the school’s Tuition Assistance Grant Fund. The two events together netted $31,000 for the fund that gives families in need access to a Christian education for their children.

The golfers enjoyed a beautiful, sunny day throughout the Tournament, which was the school’s 18th golf fundraiser since 1999. The Tournament kicked off with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start and concluded with lunch and an awards program at the Vagabond Restaurant located in the golf course clubhouse. The golfers included school parents, grandparents, alumni, alumni parents, business community members, and several ACS staff members and high school students.

As the golfers got ready for the tournament, school parent Jeff Montemurro donated his services as a physical therapist to provide athletic stretching to prevent injuries. The golfers then went on to compete in several contests at different holes throughout the day, including a popular putting contest, which resulted in a two-way tie that led to a putt-off. ACS grandparent Bob Conklin won the putting contest, besting James Andreacci from the OceanFirst Bank team. Conklin had traveled the furthest from Pennsylvania, with his wife, Mary, and two friends to participate in the Tournament.

During lunch, ACS alumnus David (DJ) Schrag (’88) recognized and thanked the golfers, sponsors, volunteers, and staff for helping make the Cougar Classic event a success.  Schrag, who is also an alumni parent and member of the school’s Board of Directors, also announced the golfers who excelled during the tournament and won various prizes. Schrag noted that the first place team included two alumni from the Class of 2019 — Ryan Lomangino and Solomon Griffith.  Lomangino also won first place for the longest drive. 2013 alumnus Ben Chapman was also on the foursome that placed third in the tournament.

Gregory’s Restaurant & Bar, Sal’s Cafe Win Top Awards at 2023 Bowls of Hope Soup Cook-Off Benefit

2023 Bowls of Hope Chef’s Super Soup Award Winner – Gregory’s Restaurant and Bar

Two Somers Point restaurants received the top awards for their New England Clam Chowders at Atlantic Christian School’s 2023 Bowls of Hope Soup Cook-Off Benefit held in the school gym on February 4. Gregory’s Restaurant & Bar, pictured at left, won first place in the “Chef’s Super Soup Award,” and Sal’s Cafe, pictured at right, won first place in the “People’s Choice Golden Spoon Award.” Some 400 people filled the school gym to taste delicious signature soups from 18 area restaurants and then voted for their favorite soup for the People’s Choice Golden Spoon Award. Chef Joe Massaglia of Mama Mia’s Ristorante in Marmora chose his favorite soup for the Chef’s Super Soup Award.

Coming in second place for the Chef’s Award was B.F. Mazzeo in Northfield, with its Butternut Squash Soup, and Chick-fil-A Fire Road received third place for its Tortilla Soup. For the Golden Spoon Award, Towne & Country Cafe came in second place with its Tomato Basil Soup, and Gregory’s Restaurant and Bar placed third.

For B.F. Mazzeo and Chick-fil-A Fire Road this was their first time competing in the Cook-Off. This is the third time that Gregory’s Restaurant & Bar has received the Chef’s Super Soup Award, with prior wins in 2018 and 2023. Sal’s Cafe is also now a three-peat winner, previously receiving the People’s Choice Golden Spoon Award in 2017 and 2022.

The Bowls of Hope showcased 18 restaurants and chefs in and around Atlantic County serving up their specialty soups and competing for the awards. Atlantic Christian high school students were among the some 50 student and staff volunteers who helped serve the soups and worked behind the scenes in the kitchen, with set up and clean up, selling tickets, and more.

7th grader Nino Miranda was recognized during the evening for winning first place in a Bowls of Hope Video Contest for creating a video to help promote the event. Two runners-up finalists in the video contest also were recognized — 11th grader Zachary Fosbenner and 6th grader Jennyfer Loiza-Riveros.

We are also grateful to a number of parents who donated desserts, and to Greate Bay Country Club for providing high top tables for our guests. Some 20 South Jersey Restaurants to Compete in 10th Bowls of Hope Soup Cook-Off Benefit on Feb. 4

Some 20 South Jersey restaurants will be competing in Atlantic Christian School’s exciting Bowls of Hope Soup Cook-Off Benefit on Saturday, February 4 from 6-8 p.m. at its campus on 391 Zion Road in Egg Harbor Township.

“We’re looking forward to tasting a wide variety of delicious soups that will be part of our cook-off, and getting the opportunity to vote for our favorite soup to receive the People’s Choice Golden Spoon Award,” said Chief School Administrator Karen Oblen. Chef Joseph Massaglia, chef owner of Mama Mia’s Ristorante in Marmora, will also be the Celebrity Cook-Off judge who will select one restaurant to receive the “Super Soup Chef’s Award.”

All proceeds from the Soup Cook-Off from ticket sales, sponsorships, and donations will benefit the educational programs of Atlantic Christian School and the Atlantic City Rescue Mission. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online at: ACSEHT.ORG/BOWLSOFHOPE.  Beverages, bread, and dessert are included in the ticket price — $20 for adults, $10 for students, and $5 for children 6 to 10 years of age, 5 and under are free.  CLICK HERE to purchase tickets.

ACS is also conducting a Bowls of Hope Food Drive to benefit the Community Food Bank of New Jersey, Southern Branch, and those attending the Cook-Off are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to donate. A Student Talent Show will also be held during the evening.

Tickets and Sponsorships on Sale for our Feb. 4 Bowls of Hope Soup Cook-Off

Our 2023 Bowls of Hope Soup Cook-Off is just two weeks away on Saturday, February 4 and ACS parents, families, and friends are invited to attend this enjoyable evening of good food and fellowship that will benefit the school and the Atlantic City Rescue Mission. Now in its 10th year, the Bowls of Hope will feature some 20 restaurants and chefs serving up their signature soups. The Cook-Off will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the school gym and  ACS students will also entertain the crowd with a Talent Show.

Some of the restaurants and chefs already signed up for the Cook-Off are: Atlantic City Rescue Mission Kitchen,  Carluccio’s, Gregory’s Restaurant & Bar, Jing Sushi House, La Tia Peruvian Cuisine, Maharaja Indian Restaurant, Root Cellar Tavern, Sal’s Cafe, Sofia Restaurant, Stir It Up Catering, The Cheese Board, Towne & Country Cafe, and Windjammer Cafe. Several of these restaurants and chefs have won past Bowls of Hope People’s Choice and Super Soup Chef’s Choice Awards. Chef Joseph Massaglia, host of Joe’s Table for Two radio show and owner of Mama Mia’s Ristorante Bin Marmora, will be attending the event to serve as our celebrity soup judge.

Everyone attending the Bowls of Hope is also being asked to bring in a can of soup or other non-perishable to donate to the Community FoodBank of NJ, Southern Branch. It’s all about giving back to our community!

The prices of the Bowls of Hope tickets, which are considered a charitable, tax-deductible gift, are: Adults-$20; Students-$10; Children (6-10)-$5; Children 5 and under are free. ACS School Families Enjoy Food, Fun, Fellowship at Back-to-School BBQ

Our 18th annual Back-to-School BBQ on Friday, September 16 was our largest ever — with over 1,200 parents, students, faculty, staff, alumni, and alumni parents coming together to enjoy an evening of fun and fellowship under beautiful, sunny skies. There were plenty of activities for children young and old, including face painting, Ga-Ga ball, 9-square-in-the-air, and several inflatables. Worship music performed live by a largely faculty-parent band was a welcome new addition to the event and everyone enjoyed taking a hay ride provided by Sleepy Hollow Family Campground, whose owners are ACS alumni parents.

For those with a sweet tooth, there were several tasty desserts available, including Kona Water Ice, Chef Steve’s Popcorn, and funnel cake.  Several groups were raising funds by selling various items — the Parent-Teacher Fellowship was selling SpiritWear sweatshirts and the ACS Cheer Squad sold mums and Playland Castaway Cove wristbands.

Thank you to the parent volunteers from the Board of Directors and PTF, as well as to our faculty and staff, who worked at the grill, served in the buffet line, volunteered in the kitchen and at the game locations, and donated food, including delicious pulled pork prepared by the Pearson family. The talented musicians who performed worship music throughout the evening, which prompted some to get up and dance, were: Ted Dawkins, Mark Huff, Amy Parker, Bill Smallwood, Bob Westcott, Jane Zigner, and Julie Zimmer, with Lee Martin on sound.

Bowls of Hope Soup Cook-Off Just One Week Away on Saturday, Feb. 5; Buy Your Tickets Online or at the Door

Our 2022 Bowls of Hope Soup Cook-Off Benefit is just one week away — on Saturday, February 5, 2022 — from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the school gym. An exciting line-up of restaurants and chefs are competing in the cook-off and ACS students will be entertaining the crowd with a lively Student Talent Show. All proceeds will benefit Atlantic Christian and the Atlantic City Rescue Mission.

Tickets can be purchased at the door or online at: acseht.org/bowlsofhope/tickets. Tickets prices are $20 for adults, $10 for students, and $5 for children aged 6-10 year old. Children five and under are free.  ACS is also selling $20 Super Soup Coupon Cards that can be used from February to May to enjoy a free serving of soup with a minimum purchase from the outstanding restaurants participating in our Cook-Off. The Coupon Cards can be purchased online or at the Bowls of Hope Soup Cook-Off.

For one ticket price, attendees at the Cook-Off can sample signature soups and vote for their favorite. The top vote-getter will be presented with the “Golden Spoon People’s Choice Award” during the evening. ACS Event Coordinator Christian Delacruz will be promoting the Bowls of Hope on the morning of February 5 as a guest on “Joe’s Table for Two” radio show on WOND 1400 AM, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. The show’s host, Chef Joseph Massaglia, will once again be our celebrity soup judge at the Bowls of Hope and will select his favorite to receive the “Chef’s Super Soup Award.”  Also appearing as a guest on the show will be Chef Donny of Sal’s Cafe, a past Golden Spoon People’s Choice Award Winner who will be entering a soup in the Bowls of Hope  Soup Cook-Off.

We also appreciate and thank our nine generous Bowls of Hope Sponsors who are helping us reach our goal of raising $10,000 from this fundraiser.  Our Bowls of Hope sponsors are: the American Church Group of NJ; B.F. Back-to-School BBQ a Great Time of Fellowship, Building Friendships

Our annual Back-to-School BBQ on September 17 was a great night of fellowship and a time to grow closer together as a school family. It was our biggest BBQ ever as we welcomed over 850 new and returning parents, students, staff, grandparents, and alumni for an enjoyable evening of  good food and lots of games and activities for students of every age.

The favorite activities included the Rock Wall, Ga Ga Ball, 9-Square in the Air, several inflatables, and going to the face-painting table.  The BBQ-goers also enjoyed several new food offerings — Kona Water Ice, Funnel Cake, and Chef Steve’s Kettle Corn Popcorn. Children and families also enjoyed a tractor-pulled wagon ride around the ACS campus, provided by the Pricskett family, whose son, Noah, drove the tractor. The Pricsketts, who are alumni parents and own Sleepy Hollow Family Campground, also provided dozens of picnic tables for seating at the BBQ.

Thank you to the many volunteers, including members of the Board of Directors, faculty, and staff, who were busy at the BBQ grill, serving at the food buffet line, doing face-painting, monitoring the student activities, and helping with set-up and clean-up.

We are also grateful to several businesses, a church, school families, and vendors who donated food, beverages, and equipment to help keep the cost of the BBQ affordable for our families. Three Local Restaurants Win Top Honors for Best Soup in 2021 Bowls Of Hope Soup Fundraiser

Gregory’s Restaurant and Bar Manager, Amanda Wyzen-Gregory, right, and her daughter, Sadie, recently accepted the Bowls of Hope Golden Spoon Award for the People’s Choice Best Soup from ACS Development and Communications Director Carole Karabashian.

Congratulations to three local restaurants who were the top vote-getters in our 2021 Bowls of Hope Soup Fundraiser, receiving the largest number of votes for “favorite soup” in on-line voting that concluded on May 31.  And the winners are — Gregory’s Restaurant and Bar, Sana & Sadia’s Mediterranean Cafe, and Towne & Country Cafe.

ACS presented Bowls of Hope “Golden Spoon Award” certificates to representatives from each of the restaurants on Monday, June 14.  The winning restaurants were the top 3 vote-getters out of 15 restaurants that participated in this year’s Bowls of Hope Super Soup Coupon Card fundraiser. The Coupon Cards were sold for $20 each in February and March and purchasers could use the Coupon Card to receive a free cup of soup for a minimum purchase from February 1 through May 31, 2021 and then vote for the restaurant that served their favorite soup.

Amanda Wyzen-Gregory accepted the award on behalf of Gregory’s Restaurant and Bar in Somers Point from Carole Karabashian, the ACS Development and Communications Director.  Amanda, who is the manager of Gregory’s and an ACS parent, was joined in the photo by her daughter, Sadie, an ACS 1st grader. Gregory’s offered a complimentary cup of its “Soup of the Day” on the Coupon Card.

At Sana & Sadia’s Mediterranean Cafe  in Egg Harbor Township, ACS presented the award to chef Sana Nammour, and her husband and owner, Jacob Nammour. The restaurant offered its signature “Chicken Tortellini Soup” to Bowls of Hope Coupon Card holders.

Towne & Country Cafe owner Steve Thomas received the award for his restaurant, located in Egg Harbor Township, that offered Coupon Card holders a complimentary cup of its “Soup of the Day.”  Thomas is an ACS alumni parent and his restaurant provides the school lunches at ACS.

Thank you to our winning restaurants and the 12 other restaurants who participated in this year’s fundraiser. Gregory’s Restaurant Wins Golden Spoon Award at 2020 Bowls of Hope Soup Cook-Off Benefit

Over 450 people came out on Saturday, February 1 to sample a variety of delicious soups and choose their favorite at our 7th annual Bowls of Hope Soup Cook-Off. Congratulations to Gregory’s Restaurant and Bar in Somers Point for taking first place in the People’s Choice Golden Spoon Award for the second year in a row, serving up a shrimp and crab roasted corn chowder. The Gregory’s family is also part of the ACS family and everyone gathered on stage to receive their award.

Sal’s Coal-Fired Pizza in Somers Point took 2nd place for the second year in a row, serving a tortellini soup. The Atlantic City Rescue Mission Kitchen finished in 3rd place with its broccoli and cheddar soup, the first time the Rescue Mission has placed in the contest. Congratulations to 2011 ACS alumnus Dara Heston, who headed up the Mission’s culinary team.

The Bowls of Hope showcased some of the best restaurants in and around Atlantic County serving up their specialty soups. Thirty-five elementary and middle school students presented 16 entertaining acts throughout the evening, showcasing their God-given talents and abilities. Students sang, danced, played the violin, and even performed while riding hover boards. Faculty member Amy Parker and senior Ashleigh Martin served as the Talent Show emcees.

The excitement is growing for our Bowls of Hope Soup Cook-Off on Saturday, February 1, with 20 restaurants and chefs on board to participate and compete for the “People’s Choice Golden Spoon Award.” The latest restaurants to sign up are Bahay Kubo, Barrels, Bonterra Market, Carluccio’s, Charlie’s, TacocaT, and The Cheese Board. For one ticket price, attendees will enjoy tasting a variety of hot, delicious soups and can vote for their favorite to receive the “People’s Choice Golden Spoon Award.” Bread, beverages, and desserts will also be provided. The evening will also include a Student Talent Show and a Silent Auction.

FM 94.3 and various radio shows on WOND AM 1400 are helping ACS promote the event and doing ticket give-aways, including “Off the Press with Scott Cronick,” “Shore Local Live,” and “Joe’s Table for Two.”

On Tuesday, January 21, ACS Development and Communications Director Carole Karabashian, and ACS parent Amanda Wyzen-Gregory and ACS grandparent Greg Gregory of Gregory’s Restaurant in Somers Point, were the featured guests on “Off the Press with Scott Cronick” show. Gregory’s Restaurant was the 2019 recipient of the Bowls of Hope Golden Spoon Award for its shrimp and lobster bisque.

Mrs. Karabashian appeared on Friday, January 24 from 7:00-7:30 p.m. on “Shore Local Live” and on Saturday, January 25 on “Joe’s Table for Two” from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., joined by Chef Nicole of Eat Clean Organization, who will be participating in the Bowls of Hope with a coconut lobster bisque.

The prices of the Bowls of Hope tickets, which are considered a charitable, tax-deductible gift, are: Adults-$20; Students-$10; Children (6-10)-$5; Children under 5-Free. Tickets can be purchased online and in the ACS school office. Tickets will also be sold at the door that night.

The themes for the auction gift baskets include “Football Party,” “Baker’s Delight,” and “Family Game Night,” and “Ice Cream Social” donated by our PreK4-8th grade classes. Parents, please note that the collection deadline for all Silent Auction baskets has been extended to Monday, January 27.
