New High School Class to Focus on Missions and Ministries

ACS has added a new high school elective called “Missions and Ministries” and faculty member Dave Genter, who will be teaching the course, is looking for help from ACS families, friends, and local churches to build a networking list of missionaries that the students can study and support.

The new elective is part of the “Ministry” concentration, one of  five high school concentrations that allow high school students to be more immersed in a specialized field as they explore their God-given gifts and abilities. The other concentrations are Business, Education, Health and Medicine, and Technology.

“The students in this class will be researching missions and missionaries — where they are, the challenges they face, their needs, and how we can pray for them,” Genter said. “We will also do some correspondence with the missionaries in the field and will try to face time some of them.” Genter said time will be set aside each week to pray specifically for the missionaries they are studying.

Please contact Mr. Genter with the names and contact numbers of any missionaries that you may know or support to help the class building their missionary network. Please email Mr. Genter at: dgenter@acseht.org.

Enrolling Now for Fall 2020 — Planning for Five-Day, On-Campus Learning, With New Remote-Only Option

Enrollment is underway for the 2020-2021 school year and ACS is looking forward to welcoming students from 6 months to the 12th grade on Tuesday, September 8 for a five-day-per-week, on-campus schedule. ACS is also offering a new “remote-only” option for students in grades 4-12 who prefer to learn at home.

“We are very excited about the start of the coming school year,” said Chief School Administrator Karen Oblen. “This summer we have been busy developing our plans to provide full in-person instruction for our students and a committee comprised of administrators, teachers, and parents has been working hard on all the details.”

“We have made a significant and informed investment in our facilities, technology, protective equipment, personnel, and training to be sure we can provide students and staff with a safe learning environment,” Oblen said. At the same time, Oblen said webcams have been installed in every classroom to provide synchronous remote classroom instruction if necessary when a student is ill and for Upper School students who choose the new remote-only learning option.

The Admissions Department is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.  to answer questions and give tours of the campus by appointment.  Please contact Admissions Director Jessica Martin at jmartin@acseht.org or 609-653-1199, ext. 314. Classes are filling quickly and space is limited, so don’t delay.

CLICK HERE to schedule a tour online. All visitors will have their temperature taken and must wear a mask while in the school building. CLICK HERE to complete and submit our online admissions application.

Oblen said enhanced cleaning protocols and health screening procedures will help promote a healthy environment on the school campus, including daily temperature and wellness checks for students and staff upon arrival to school. Sanitation stations have been installed in classrooms and hallways and plexi-glass shields have been purchased for use on classroom desks and on lunch tables.

Face coverings will be required for all faculty and staff when in the school building and for children in K-12 when entering and exiting the building and when transitioning in hallways and other common areas. Entry into any buildings on campus will be limited.

Congratulations, Class of 2020!

ACS marked its 27th Commencement with an uplifting outdoor ceremony on July 8, as various speakers encouraged the 20 students in the Class of 2020 to trust God and the plan He has for their lives.

“In the midst of this pandemic, the future may seem unsure, but you graduates do not need to fear what the unknown future holds as long as you put your faith and trust in the Lord,” said Chief School Administrator Karen Oblen, who welcomed the parents, faculty, staff, and friends to the ceremony that was also live-streamed on the ACS YouTube channel.

Commencement keynote speaker Pastor Matt Mouliert urged the graduates to surrender to God and seek His purpose for their lives. “You have been given this precious life from Almighty God — spend it wisely because you can only spend it once,” Mouliert said. “If you keep God at the center of your life, then you will succeed, your life will matter.” Mouliert is Senior Pastor of Crossroads Fellowship in Pleasantville, has taught Bible classes at ACS for 9 years, and his two sons, Jake (’16) and Luke (’18), are ACS alumni.

Valedictorian Ashleigh Martin, 17, of Mays Landing, said she and her classmates were very thankful to able to come together for an in-person Commencement. “This year has been an emotional roller coaster for us all, but in all this fear and despair, we have a God who carried us through,” Martin said. “We may not have had our missions trips, prom, and senior celebrations,  but we learned to trust in what God would do. We learned to persevere and finish the year strong.” Martin is receiving a full academic scholarship to attend Anderson University in the fall where she will major in musical theater. She was also one of 15 seniors in southern New Jersey to receive  recently chosen by the Press of Atlantic City

Salutatorian Josephine D’Anna, 18, of Northfield, said one of the important lessons she has learned over the past four years of high school was to develop an attitude of humility by making God first in everything you do. “I encourage you, Class of 2020, as we go on to college, work, and into the world to look at every situation with humility and to realize that God’s work is more important than striving for success. Instead, always strive to do you best for Him.” D’Anna will be attending Thomas Jefferson University in the fall, where she will major in nursing. She received the Comcast Achievers Scholarship, the Sons of Italy Scholarship, the Special Forces Association scholarship, and a scholarship from the Northfield Mother’s League.

Chief School Administrator Karen Oblen, Upper School Principal Meg McHale, and Board of Directors’ Chair Les Tomlinson participated in the presentation of the diplomas to the graduates. After receiving their diplomas, the graduates stepped out into the audience to present their parents and guardians with long stemmed roses as a gesture of gratitude.

As each graduate was introduced, McHale announced the various awards and scholarships that students had received. She noted that the Class of 2020 was collectively receiving over $530,000 in college scholarships, after being offered over $1.2 million from the schools they applied to.

The four students who attended ACS continuously since kindergarten — Lauren Harmon, Paige Hoover, Dalton Sage, and Kathryn Winder — were  recognized and later received a gift card from the Parent Teacher Fellowship (PTF). Two students — Harmon and Ian Iaconelli – were also the recipients of a PTF essay-writing scholarship. Harmon will be attending Cairn University to seek a degree in psychology and communications. She is receiving the Cairn Merit Scholarship and the University Director’s Award. Iaconelli will be attending Eastern University in the fall to pursue a degree in physical therapy. He also received the Red Cross Scholarship.

Staff members Kelly Flynn and Bill Smallwood led the attendees in a time of worship, singing “The Blessing” by Kari Jobe, Elevation Worship, and Cody Carnes. Ian Iaconelli, who was class president in his junior and senior year, gave the benediction to close the program.

Blessing Ceremony on July 16 Recognizes Accomplishments of 8th Grade Class

ACS celebrated the accomplishments of twenty-two 8th grade students at the 8th Grade Blessing Ceremony on Thursday, July 16 held outdoors on the school campus grounds and also live-streamed on the ACS YouTube channel.

Chief School Administrator Karen Oblen welcomed family members, staff, and friends to the ceremony and 8th grader Evangelina Kim offered the opening prayer. Oblen thanked parents for recognizing the importance  of a Christian education and encouraged each student to build on the spiritual foundation provided at ACS.

“I pray that God’s Word has been firmly rooted in your hearts, that those seeds that have planted here are watered and that God causes them to grow,” Oblen said. “I pray that you remember that God loves you more than anything. That He’s got you back; that He’s your rear guard; that He goes before you and behind you, and that He will never leave you or forsake you.”

The valedictorian of the Class of 2020, Ashleigh Martin, gave a challenge to the students as they move on to high school to cling to God and turn to Him in prayer. “Wherever you go for these next four years, trust in God and His plan for your life and you will prosper in everything you do,” Martin said.

Before the presentation of awards and promotion certificates by Upper School Principal Meg McHale and Chief School Administrator Karen Oblen, middle school teachers George Dickson and Lisa Dye (on behalf of Sara Coates who could not attend) shared advice and heartfelt farewells to the class.

A number of students were recognized for their accomplishments in academics, physical fitness, citizenship, Christian character, and leadership. On behalf of the Parent Teacher Fellowship, Upper School Principal McHale recognized three students who had attended ACS since kindergarten — Jackson Gayeski, Michaela Schlemo, and Noelle Thompson — and following the ceremony they were given a devotional and a gift card. Staff members Kelly Flynn and Bill Smallwood performed a vocal duet of  “The Blessing” and 8th grader Noah Gibbs closed the ceremony in prayer.

Following is a list of the special awards and scholarships that were announced for students in the 8th grade class:

New Employee Spotlight — Guidance Counselor Mrs. Christina Ragland

ACS is excited to welcome Mrs. Christina Ragland, who will be joining the ACS faculty this fall as our new Guidance Counselor. She holds a Master’s degree in K-12 counseling and guidance from New York University and is a New Jersey-certified school counselor.

“We are looking forward to having Mrs. Ragland bring her skills, passion,  and experience as a guidance counselor to ACS to help our students develop academic plans that reflect their skills, talents, and strengths,” said Chief School Administrator Karen Oblen. “We also know that God will be working through Mrs. Ragland to come alongside our students from elementary school to high school to address behavioral and academic challenges.” Mrs. Ragland will also be teaching the high school “College and Careers” course.

Mrs. Ragland is a native of Jersey City, NJ. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Rutgers University in 2011 with a BA in psychology. During her undergraduate studies, she was a research assistant in the RISC lab and a member of the Abbott Leadership Institute which teaches education advocacy, policy, and practices to parents, educators, community members, and students.

During her graduate studies at New York University, Mrs. Ragland worked at the Henry and Lucy Moses Center for Students with Disabilities as a graduate assistant. She also completed a guidance internship at Landmark High School in New York City and worked with the high school counselor and college advisor. She taught workshops to junior and seniors on the college process, led a small group on self-esteem called “Brand New Me” for freshman and sophomore girls, conducted one-on-one sessions, as well as organized college trips and retreats for students. She was also nominated and received the “Youth on the Move” award for her community involvement and mentorship for youth in her community.

Upon graduation, Mrs. Ragland relocated to South Jersey and began working in the school system as a paraprofessional for students with autism. She then began working at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center as a Care Coordinator for the Case Management Department. Mrs. Ragland has taught workshops for schools and community events on such topics as self-esteem, bullying, and college preparation.

Mrs. Ragland is an active member of Lighthouse Community Church in Pleasantville, New Jersey, where she serves on the social media team, administration team, and is a co-leader of a small group for young adult women. She has a passion for seeing souls added to God’s Kingdom and helping individuals recognize and live out their God-given purposes.

Mrs. Ragland and her husband, Christian, are proud parents of three children, Moriah Kansas, Morgan Kaidence, and Matthew Kevin. Mrs. Ragland considers her family her biggest blessing and enjoys making new memories with them and sharing them on her Facebook mommy blog page called, “Mommy and MK.”

2020-2021 Enrollment Underway, School Campus Open for Tours

Enrollment for the 2020-2021 school year is underway and COVID-19 guidelines in New Jersey now allow for prospective families to make an appointment to take a tour of our highly-rated school and to meet with the Admissions Department. ACS recently earned a “2020 Best Schools” ranking from Niche, the largest website for researching public and private K-12 schools.

Admissions Director Jessica Martin said there are openings for students at every grade level, from Early Education to the 12th grade. Please call or email Mrs. Martin to schedule your appointment at 609-653-1199, ext. 314 or jmartin@acseht.org. Only parents or guardians may attend the appointment and everyone is required to wear a mask while in the school building.

Martin also said the tuition rates for the 2020-2021 school year have been approved by the school’s Board of Directors and are posted on the school’s website under the Admissions tab.

This is the second consecutive year ACS has received a “Best Schools” ranking from Niche, which is used by millions of families to choose the right schools for their children. ACS has an overall grade of “A-” on Niche and is ranked #32 out of 47 “Best Private K-12 schools in NJ.” Other Niche rankings of ACS include: #3 in “Best Private High Schools in Atlantic County,” #12 out of 26 “Best Christian High Schools in New Jersey,” and #35 of 196 “Most Diverse Private High School in New Jersey.”

Celebrating the Class of 2020 – With Yard Signs, Video, Press of AC Photo Gallery

ACS created colorful yard signs with a photo of each of the 20 seniors in the Class of 2020 to honor and celebrate their accomplishments. The yard signs were displayed at the school campus and then delivered to the students at their homes from May 5 to 15. ACS also created a video with poignant, personalized messages for each senior from the administration and high school faculty. Photos of the seniors are also on display in a virtual graduation photo gallery on the Press of Atlantic City online.

The yard signs were delivered by Upper School Principal Meg McHale and the ACS Cougar mascot, traveling to the students’ homes in Absecon, Egg Harbor Township, Northfield, Somers Point, Mays Landing, Ocean View, and even Cape May Courthouse. Teachers, students, and high school parents then participated in a drive-by parade on various days — waving and honking their car horns as the seniors and their parents gathered on their front lawns with their sign.

“We wanted to do something special for our seniors to make them feel loved and appreciated,” said Chief School Administrator Karen Oblen. “The outbreak of the coronavirus cancelled so many of the events that were planned for our seniors and in mid-May it was uncertain whether we would even be able to hold commencement.”

Oblen added that the school administration, parents, and seniors are very pleased that a recent decision by the Governor’s Office in late May will allow commencements to be held outdoors with adherence to social distancing guidelines on or after July 6. ACS Commencement has now been scheduled for Wednesday, July 8 at at 10 a.m. The rain date is July 9.

Ashleigh Martin One of 25 Area Seniors to Receive 2020 Press of Atlantic City Young Leaders Award

Congratulations to ACS 12th grader Ashleigh Martin — one of 25 South Jersey seniors to receive the 2020 Press of Atlantic City Young Leaders Award.  The award recipients were selected from high schools in Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland, and southern Ocean counties for their academic achievement, diverse extracurricular activities, and service to their communities.

The Press of Atlantic City published a special section online and had a pull-out section in its May 22 issue that devoted one biographical page to Ashleigh and each of the other recipients. Ashleigh is receiving a full scholarship to attend Anderson University this fall, where she will major in musical theater. Ashleigh is the second ACS senior to receive this prestigious award. Ayolola Oguntuase was selected to receive the 2019 Young Leaders Award. Lola is majoring in pre-med at Thomas Jefferson University.

ACS School Library Is Now Online, Linked to ACS Website

The ACS Library is now online! An online catalog of the books in our school library, created by ACS Library Media Specialist Rhapsody Hahn-Chaney,  was added to the ACS website in late March.

Hahn-Chaney said the catalog works just like a catalog at the public library — you can go online to search for books by author, title, subject, series, etc. The online library site will also show which books are checked in or checked out. To find the catalog, go to the “Student Life” tab on the website and choose the “Library” sub-tab in the drop down.

Throughout the school year, K-5 students visit the library weekly to check out books, learn library research skills, and to read books and enjoy reading circle time. The library is also a resource for research by middle and high school students.

“Using their bar codes, students will be able to login to their accounts, save books to a list, reserve a book, and see what they have checked out,  a great way for parents to keep track of this too,” Hahn-Chaney said.

Hahn-Chaney also created several videos featuring the library that she posted on March 20 on her virtual library classroom site for students in K-5 to watch. The videos included a special message from security guard Curtis Dull and Hahn-Chaney reading the poem “I’m Up Here” by Karla Kuskin.

New School Closure Information

April 3, 2020

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Governor Murphy’s series of Executive Orders, our K-12 campus and Early Education Center are closed until further notice. We will inform school families as soon as possible once a reopen date has been established. Since March 17, our faculty members have continued providing classroom instruction to our K-12 students via remote eLearning platforms. Please contact your child’s Principal by email with any questions as the school office is closed in compliance with the Governor Murphy’s executive order directing residents to remain at home.

In this time of uncertainty, Scripture reminds us to draw closer to God and to put fear aside. As it says in Philippians 4:6-7 – “Do no be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”

Three Alumni Lady Cougars Basketball Players Made Their Mark on College Teams

Three alumni who played on ACS championship Lady Cougars basketball teams made significant contributions this season to their college teams — 2017 graduate Dakota Hitchner, 2015 graduate Ola Oguntuase, and 2016 graduate Candace Winkel (pictured above with ACS Athletic Director Pam Hitchner).

Winkel, a shooting guard on Clarks Summit University’s Women’s Basketball team, sank her 1,000th point on February 20 in the final game of regular season play in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. Athletic Director Pam Hitchner and Winkel’s family were at the game to celebrate this rare accomplishment at the college level.  Winkel’s team finished 4th in the conference and went on to the playoffs, but lost in the first round. Winkel is graduating this May with a degree in counseling and plans to earn her Masters in counseling at Clarks Summit.

Hitchner, in her second year as the point guard on Cairn University’s Women’s Basketball team, averaged 20 points a game and received Honorable Mention All-Conference in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. Hitchner, a junior, is majoring in physical education.

Oguntuase, a pre-med major at Jefferson University, has been a member of this strong Division 2 team since her freshman year. The team came in first place this year in the Central Athletic Collegiate Conference and was moving on to play in the NCAA Division 2 Championship tournament, but due to the Coronavirus pandemic the tournament games were recently cancelled. Oguntuase, who plays center, averaged five minutes of playing time this year and played strong in the final game of the regular season.

The Varsity Baseball team will play its first game on Friday, March 20 — a non-league home game against Annapolis Area Christian School. The Varsity Baseball team will play its second, non-league game on Friday, March 27 at home against Oakcrest High School. The first Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference games for the Varsity Baseball and Softball teams will be on Tuesday, March 31 at home against Pilgrim Academy.

The Middle School baseball and softball teams will play their first games in the Atlantic Cape Junior High League on Tuesday, April 21 at home against Pilgrim Academy.

The head coaches who will lead our high school and middle school teams this season are:

  • Varsity Girls’ Softball — Dara Kimmerley, in her 6th year, with a strong record of winning seasons, including a TSCAC championship in 2017, a first place regular season finish in 2018, and taking the team to the championship game in 2019.
  • Middle School Boys’ Baseball — Charlie Costello, an ACS parent in his first year as head coach. He assisted former head coach Rob Barberio last year when the team finished in 3rd place in the league.
  • Middle School Girls’ Softball — Rick Jackson, an ACS parent in his first year as head coach. He assisted former head coach Mike Bohs, who led the team to a 1st place finish in the league in 2018 and tied for first in 2019.

See What’s New Around the 37-Acre ACS Campus

Work crews are converting our grass soccer field to an artificial turf field expected to be ready by mid-April.

With spring around the corner, we thank God for providing funding for a number of improvements now underway on our beautiful, spacious 37-acre campus, including new security fencing, an artificial turf soccer field, and a new outdoor toddler playground also covered with artificial turf.

“We are so excited about these new upgrades to some of our outdoor facilities that have been made possible through donations and grants,” said Chief School Administrator Karen Oblen. “Our students from preschool to high school will be benefiting from these improvements for years to come.”

New security fencing will soon surround outdoor play areas, made possible by state security grant funding for non-public schools. Progressive Fence began installing the green support poles for the fencing in January. The height of the fencing will range from 6- to 10-feet high, and will include several lockable gates at entry points to the track. Oblen said additional new fencing is planned for the next school year to go along the property lines near the baseball and softball fields.

Several weeks ago, work crews from Clayton Companies began removing the grass on the main soccer field used by the Varsity Boys’ and Middle School Boys’ soccer field to replace it with artificial turf. The turf field and the labor is being donated by Clayton Companies and is expected to be ready by mid-April. Oblen said the turf field will have better drainage and will be significantly less costly to maintain than the grass field.

With the start of warmer weather this month, ACS students in toddler preschool classes have come outdoors to explore their new play area, which has been fenced in and covered with artificial turf. “The children were all smiles and the turf is a safe surface that is easy to keep clean,” said Elementary Principal and Early Education Director Gail Alford. Recently completed asphalt-covered walkways along the perimeters of the playgrounds are also providing easier access to the play areas and the track.

Bump, Set, Spike! Students Enjoy Friendly Competition in Annual Volleyball Tournament

It was a challenging night of friendly competition, with plenty of bumps, sets, and spikes as ACS students, joined by a few agile faculty and family members, faced off in the ACS gym on Friday, February 28 for the annual Intramural Volleyball Tournament.

Nearly 70 people showed off their skills as nine high school teams and one middle school team competed for team medals and bragging rights. After three hours of double-elimination games, the high school team named “Rest in Peace” took first place. The members of the winning team, comprised of 5 juniors and 1 sophomore, pictured below (from left) are: Jacob Rosie, Chloe Vogel, Landon Shivers, Sydney Pearson, Aaron Glancey, and Cristen Winkel.

A combined junior/senior team named “One-Sixth Black” placed 2nd, a freshman team, wearing pink T-shirts sporting the name “Chew Blocka” placed 3rd, and the “Cruise Control” team with parent, faculty, and high school student players who wore light blue Sterling Tackle shirts, placed 4th. Athletic Director Pam Hitchner and PE teacher Ben Chapman served as referees during the tournament.

New Employee Spotlight: Computer Teacher & Library Media Specialist Rhapsody Hahn-Chaney

ACS welcomes new Computer Teacher and Library Media Specialist Rhapsody Hahn-Chaney

Rhapsody Hahn-Chaney is the new face in the ACS first floor computer lab, where she teaches students from kindergarten to high school to master the technology skills necessary to be successful in the classroom, in college, and the workplace. She also welcomes K-5 students to the school library each week, where they are developing a love of reading and are learning library research skills.

Mrs. Hahn-Chaney became the new computer teacher and library media specialist in January after Mrs. Diane Ash relocated with her family to Massachusetts. However, she is no stranger to ACS as she has been a proud and involved parent since 2015. Her son Caedyn is now in 5th grade and her son Gaebriel is in 3rd grade. But her real first day at ACS was in 1993 as a student in Mrs. Cassell’s kindergarten class. She attended ACS for most of her elementary years.

Hahn-Chaney holds a BS from the Art Institute of Philadelphia and is certified in Inbound Marketing and Digital Skills. Prior to coming to ACS, she was a content writer and manager for DotCom Global Media in Somers Point.

Hahn-Chaney, her husband, Marques, and their two sons live in Mays Landing and are active members of Fresh Start Church in Egg Harbor Township. She is currently working on redesigning the church’s website and recently enjoyed serving at Tim Tebow’s “A Night to Shine” event hosted at the church.

Hahn-Chaney takes her role as a teacher very seriously, describing herself as “an entrusted alternate” for the parents and grandparents who work hard so that their children and grandchildren can attend ACS. “I teach new skills, address bad days, give encouragement, inspire a thought process, share the love of Jesus, show a good example, and administer correction, all to the purpose of being an excellent stand-in for my students’ primary caregivers,.” Hahn-Chaney said.

Her favorite Bible verse is Proverbs 3:5-6. “In our world today, there is great emphasis on being really smart and getting more educated, but God is not impressed by academia,” Hahn-Chaney said. “He cares about our hearts. If I trust Him with all of my heart instead of trying to figure it all out, He will teach me what I need to know and show me what I need to do.”

Seven ACS Varsity Basketball Players Recognized for Outstanding Achievement

TSCAC Varsity Girls’ Basketball MVP – junior forward Sydney Pearson

Seven ACS Varsity Basketball players made outstanding contributions to their teams over the past season and were recently recognized for their achievements. Junior forward Sydney Pearson received the highest individual honor given by the Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference — the Varsity Girls’ MVP award — and six other players were named TSCAC All-Stars.

The ACS players were recognized and honored during an awards ceremony after the conclusion of the Championship Games on February 22. The ACS basketball players who were named TSCAC All-Stars were — Girls’ team: Olivia Chapman, Shelby Einwechter, Sydney Pearson, and Cristen Winkel; and Boys’ team: Ben Noble, Dan Roland, and Landon Shivers. ACS hosted the TSCAC All-Star Games this past Tuesday and fans had the opportunity to cheer on their favorite players for one last time this season.

Senior Dan Roland was also honored just days before the championship tournament for pulling down 500 rebounds during his high school career. Roland became the 13th ACS Varsity Basketball player in school history to reach this significant milestone. He was recognized and given a special game ball at the Feb. 20 semi-final playoff game.

Students from elementary to high school collaborated on a service project this month to decorate and fill 30 Valentine’s Day gift bags with hand-made Valentine’s Day cards, snacks, games, and craft projects for families at the Ronald McDonald House in Camden. This is the third year in a row that ACS students have participated in this Valentine’s Day service project.

The gift bags were delivered on Valentine’s Day by ACS Resource Room Specialist Mrs. Kelly Schlundt, who heads up the project. The gift bags were given to children who are staying at the Ronald McDonald House while they receive treatment at Philadelphia area hospitals.

Mrs. Schlundt said ACS has also been collecting metal soda can tabs in the lunchroom. The tabs collected during the first half of this school year are recycled and the funds help pay for the utility bills at the Ronald McDonald House. “We’ll keep collecting the soda tabs until the end of the school year and will give them to the Ronald McDonald House over the summer or next Valentine’s Day,” Mrs. Schlundt said.

“We were thrilled to have the opportunity to host the Championship Tournament in the ACS gym and we are proud of every player on our Boys’ and Girls’ teams who always gave 110% whenever they stepped onto the court,” said Athletic Director Pam Hitchner. At the conclusion of the tournament, each member of the winning Varsity Boys’ team and their coaches climbed up a ladder to cut off a piece of the basketball net as a special keepsake, a tournament tradition.

The Varsity Boys’ and Girls’ teams will travel to Ohio next week to compete in a 3-day national tournament that concludes March 7. The tournament is organized by the National Christian School Athletic Association and features teams from across the U.S. who are the best in their regions.

“We’re very grateful to our school families and friends who filled our stands at home games and during the Championship Tournament, encouraging our athletes to do their best,” Hitchner said. “We also appreciate the parents and other volunteers, led by long-time ACS parent Terry Vogel, who worked in our Cougar Den concession stand throughout the season, helping raise funds for our athletic program.”

Hitchner also thanked and recognized the assistant coaches and team managers for their important contributions to a memorable season — Varsity Girls’ assistant coach Dara Kimmerley; Varsity Boys’ assistant coaches Drew Carney, Ben Chapman, and Paul Jones; and team managers Ashleigh Martin and Alex Wang.

ACS Students: We Love Our Pastors

Over 50 pastors and ministry leaders from 30 area churches were the honored guests at Pastor Appreciation Day on Wednesday, February 12. The special day began with a complimentary breakfast for the pastors followed by an all-school chapel program that featured students from preschool to the 12th grade.

Senior Ashleigh Martin shares her faith journey at the Pastor Appreciation Day Chapel.

The students sang and danced to songs of praise and worship and recited Bible verses that incorporated the steps to salvation. 12th grader Ashleigh Martin shared how serving God on ACS missions trips to Houston and the Bahamas helped her grow in her faith.

The program also included a video that featured dozens of students talking about why they love their pastors and church and thanking them for the important role they play in their lives. ACS also presented the pastors with a special ACS mug and handmade valentines created by the students in the Servant’s Heart Club.

During breakfast, Pastor Mike Bult of Mainland Baptist Church, spoke on the challenges facing the church in reaching Generation Z with the gospel. He emphasized the importance of building relationships and using the tools of social media to connect with young people. He also talked about the power of prayer and for pastors to encourage parents to pray regularly with their children.

After chapel, the students had fun taking pictures and talking with their pastors. This week was Spirit Week at ACS and many students were wearing cowboy hats, boots, bandannas, and other Western wear attire to fit the day’s theme.

ACS recognized and honored senior guard Ben Noble, a member of the Varsity Boys’ Basketball team, for achieving the significant milestone of scoring 1,000 points during his high school career with a special presentation during a home game on Friday, January 31 in the ACS gym. Noble scored his 1,000th point before a record-breaking crowd by sinking a foul shot in the 4th quarter of the conference game against King’s Christian School.
