Thank You for Supporting Our Fall Book Fair — Nearly $11,000 in Record Sales

Thank you to the many parents, grandparents, and other family members who supported our Seussical, JR.-themed fall Book Fair held from November 14-23. With over 1,200 books sold, the gross sales neared $11,000, setting a new school record, according to faculty member Patti Scardilli, who oversaw the Fair, assisted by Rhapsody Hahn-Chaney, ACS K-12 Computer Teacher.

The Book Fair profits of $2,675 are being used to purchase Christian literature and resources for the school library and classrooms. Scardilli said close to 100 new books are being added to the ACS library, including picture books, early readers, chapter books, and graphic novels.

Scardilli has now begun reading some of the new books to elementary students on their weekly library day. “The new books are so inspiring for our students — there are stories about God’s grace, about the heroes in the Bible, about courage, and the power of prayer,” Scardilli said.

Scardilli said the goal this year was to ensure that the Book Fair promoted a Biblical worldview and that the inventory was consistent with the ACS mission statement and values.

“We achieved that goal and ensured that all of the books, posters, and other products for sale were suitable for our student body,”  Scardilli said. To achieve that goal, ACS partnered for the first time with Christian-based vendors, including the Truth That Rocks Bookstore, Munce, Swanson, and New Day, to provide the books, stationery items, Bibles, devotionals, and gift items for the Book Fair.

Students visited the school library from November 14-18 to preview the Book Fair items and create their wish lists. Teachers’ classroom wish lists were also posted. In-person family shopping began on November 18 and 19, with opportunities to shop both before and after the Seussical, JR. musical performances. Family shopping continued the following week concluding on Grandparent Appreciation Day on November 23.

She thanked the some 20 parents, grandparents, staff, and students who volunteered and helped make the fair a success.

ACS Book Fair Gets Underway — Shop from Nov. 19-23

The ACS Book Fair got underway the week of November 14 with students visiting the school library to preview the books and novelty items and create their shopping wish lists.

In-person family shopping opens on Friday, November 18 — the opening night of the Seussical JR. musical — with opportunities to shop both before and after the show, from 6:00-7:00 p.m. and from 8:00-9:00 p.m. The Book Fair will also be open on Saturday, November 19 before and after the two Seussical JR. performances, from 1:00-2:00 p.m., 3:00-4:00 p.m., 6:00-7:00 p.m., and 8:00-9:00 p.m. The Book Fair will be closed while the musical is being performed.

Family shopping will continue the following week, on November 21-22, from 3:00-5:00 p.m. and on November 23, Grandparent Appreciation Day, from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Thank you to the parents and grandparents who signed up to volunteer for the Book Fair. On opening day on November 14, ACS parent Noriko Dorsey assisted students in Mrs. Reilly’s kindergarten class as they looked at various books and helped them create their wish lists. Mrs. Reilly and her aide, Mrs. Fosbenner, also worked with the students on their wish lists. A copy of each student’s wish list is sent home so parents can approve selections and send money in with students from November 21-23.

Middle school and high school students are also shopping at the fair during their lunch break.

Librarian Patti Scardilli said ACS is very happy to be partnering with several Christian companies to promote a Biblical worldview through the books, posters, and other products that are on sale. The Truth That Rocks Bookstore, as well as Munce, Swanson, New Day, and other Christian vendors, are supplying books and products for the Book Fair.

“We have a great selection of Christian books, games, stationery items, toys, CDs, DVDs, and more,” Scardilli said. In keeping with the Seussical JR. theme, the school library and adjacent hallway are decorated with Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat, and other characters from Dr. Seuss’ famous books.

ACS Launches Successful Summer Community Farmers Market

ACS launched a new Community Farmers Market on its campus this summer that attracted close to 1,000 visitors and featured 53 different vendors over the course of 10 Saturday market days. Thank you to the many ACS family members, teachers, and students who participated as vendors and came out to shop, helping make the market a success as the first summer-long farmers market in Egg Harbor Township. On August 27, the final market day, vendors and ACS staff gathered for a group photo.

Egg Harbor Township Mayor Paul Hodson kicked off the launch of the new market at a ribbon-cutting with school officials and volunteers on June 25.   “You’ve started something good here and I really think it’s going to take off,” said Mayor Hodson, as he walked around the market and interacted with vendors. Participating in the ribbon-cutting were Carole Karabashian, ACS Director of Development and Communication; Arzum Sanchez, the Farmers Market Manager; Mayor Hodson; and Elaine Carroll, Farmers Market volunteer and ambassador.

The market opened outdoors on June 18 with just five vendors — Busy Bees, Smith Poultry Farm, Root Cellar Tavern, Thirty-One Gifts, and April Made for Kitten Aid — and grew to average of 18 vendors per week, with some vendors moving into the air-conditioned gym and others staying outdoors.

There was something for everyone at the market — fresh vegetables from Smith Poultry Farm of Williamstown and the ACS School Garden, beautiful succulent arrangements from Round Tree Farm in Mullica Hill, handmade crafts, jewelry, art and photography, dog treats, books, educational materials, and more.

Visitors could enjoy a cup of lemonade or a plate of delicious sausage and peppers or tacos from Root Cellar Tavern in Dorothy. Major Confections sold fancy cupcakes and desserts. There were inspirational T-shirts and Bibles on sale from Truth That Rocks Bookstore in Northfield, and you could even get a chair massage from a therapist with Drift Day Spa in Northfield. Visitors could also learn about getting organic produce delivered to their home by Just Organics – partnered with Honey Tree Health. Members of Greentree Church in Egg Harbor Township gave spiritual encouragement and shared the gospel with those who stopped by their table.

“The Farmers Market was a great opportunity for our school to connect with the local community, provide a place to get fresh, organic produce, and showcase the many talented local crafters and artists in our area,” said Sanchez, who managed the market each week.  “We were also thrilled to see so many ACS families and students participate in some way, volunteering at the ACS School Garden Table and even selling jewelry and knick-knacks that they had made.”

Neverland-Themed Scholastic Book Fair Coming Nov. 15-24; Shopping Opens First Night of Peter Pan Jr. Musical; Sign Up Online to Volunteer

Our fall Scholastic Book Fair with a Neverland theme is two weeks away and will run from November 15-24. All students and their family members will have opportunities to visit the fair on select days and can shop in person or online for books and gift items. The Book Fair organizers are also in need of volunteers to help with setup and pack up and to serve as shopping assistants.

“Last year’s Book Fair raised some $8,500 for our school library and classroom educational needs and we hope to surpass that goal this year,” said K-12 Computer Teacher Rhapsody Hahn-Chaney, who is overseeing the fair with Library Media Specialist Patti Scardilli.  This year’s goal is to sell 1,250 books and raise $10,000, which will be used to buy teacher requested books for classrooms, books to lend students at the ACS Library, and a subscription to Scholastic News magazine for elementary students to enjoy at home.

Students will be visiting the school library from November 15-19 to preview the Book Fair items and create their “wish lists.” Product selection will include Scholastic books and stationery items, as well as Bibles, devotionals, and Christian books and gift items from the Truth That Rocks Bookstore in Northfield. A Scholastic Book Catalog will be sent home with PreK3-6th grade students. The Scholastic website also has the catalog of books and gift items to choose from.

Shopping will continue the following week, November 22-24, when students can purchase the items they have selected. Family members can visit the Book Fair after school on select days and times from November 22-23.  Parents, grandparents, and friends can also shop online from November 15-28. Book fair purchases can be paid by cash and check or by uploading funds to a digital eWallet (via the Book Fair website).

The in-person family shopping days and hours for November 22-23 are scheduled using the last name of the parent, as follows:

Last name beginning with A-L — Monday, Nov. 22, 3:30-6:30 p.m.

Thank You for Supporting Our Scholastic Book Fair — Record Sales Top $8,500

Thank you to the many parents, grandparents, and other family members who supported our Scholastic Book Fair held from November 9-20.  With over 1,000 books sold, the sales exceeded $8,500, setting a new school record, according to Mrs. Rhapsody Hahn-Chaney, ACS Library Media Specialist, who oversaw the Fair.

ACS also partnered with the Truth That Rocks Bookstore in Northfield, which supplied Christian books, devotionals, and other inspirational items for the book fair. “The mini-Bibles on a keychain were a big hit,” Hahn-Chaney said.

The Book Fair sales benefitted individual students as well as the school. For every purchase, ACS earns points to use for subscriptions to the Scholastic News magazine used in K-5 classrooms, for new books for the school library, and technology and educational supplies for K-12 classrooms.

“This year, we are beefing up the young adult literature section in our library to accommodate more advanced readers in the 5th grade and our upper school students who visit the library on a bi-weekly basis,” Hahn-Chaney said.  A total of $140.16 was also donated by individuals who made purchases during the fair that went toward the “All For Books” program. Hahn-Chaney said these donated funds have been used to purchase select books from Teacher Wish Lists that will be available on classroom bookshelves for students to enjoy.

Hahn-Chaney recognized and thanked a number of parents, grandparents, and staff who volunteered and helped make the fair a success, including: Gail Alford, Katie Boyle, Noriko Dorsey, Angela Lushina, Jessica Martin, Brenda Maurer, Karen Oblen, Patti Scardilli, Sandy Settles, and Ashley Vaccaro.  She also thanked a number of students who gave a helping hand — Ashlee Alford, Isabell Alford, Lily Boyle, Ethan Costello, Noah Engle, Keira Frontino, Jude Gibbs, Caedyn Hahn-Chaney, Gaebriel Hahn-Chaney, Victoria Hines, Richard Jackson, Asher Molina, Thomas Potenski, Austin Salcedo, Kalee Tardif,  Jade Thompson, Nathanael Thompson,  and Noelle Thompson.

Hahn-Chaney also noted that a “secret Santa” helped a couple dozen elementary students who did not bring quite enough money to cover their orders. “Our shopping assistants helped the younger students to shop within their budgets and guided them to make decisions accordingly, but if they were just a bit shy of the total at the register, the difference was paid by the secret Santa,” Hahn-Chanel said. This arrangement was explained to the students so that they would understand the concept of generosity and gratitude, Hahn-Chaney said.
