Our kindergarten classes celebrated Johnny Appleseed Day and Apple Day during the week of September 28, learning how to make applesauce from scratch and doing an apple taste test.

The first step in the applesauce-making process was to cut up red and green apples and stack them into crock pots to cook, a task carried out by the classroom aides and KB teacher Mrs. Vaccaro. In the afternoon, once the apples had cooked down, the students took turns using a food mill to mash the apples into applesauce. Of course, the students also enjoyed eating the applesauce they had made.

Students also had the opportunity to do an apple tasting test. “This week we have been learning all about our senses and the apple tasting test gave the children an opportunity to describe the feel, look, smell, sound, and taste of various apples,” said Mrs. Vaccaro.
