The ACS Mock Trial team recently participated in a virtual scrimmage with Kinnelon High School, a public school in Morris County, as they prepare for the upcoming New Jersey State Bar Foundation Mock Trial Competition in January. This practice session helped our students sharpen their skills and become more familiar with the details of this year’s case.

The state released a criminal case involving a defendant charged with False Public Alarm in the second degree after an alleged swatting incident at a local coffee shop. The false emergency report created chaos, resulting in one of the baristas being burned by spilled hot coffee. Students are now studying the case, preparing arguments, and learning how to present evidence effectively.

We are grateful for the commitment of Atlantic County public defender Hunter Hurst, who is serving as our attorney coach, and for the leadership of Mrs. Rhapsody Hahn-Chaney, who has returned as our teacher coach. Their guidance plays a key role in helping students grow in confidence and skill.

This year’s ACS Mock Trial program includes 12 high school students serving as attorneys and witnesses, two middle school students serving as members of the jury, and two high school students competing as courtroom sketch artists. The program helps students grow in critical thinking, public speaking, and problem-solving, while also offering scholarship opportunities for seniors. It is also a wonderful way to build friendships and foster a love for learning.
