Fourth graders in Mrs. Melody’s and Mrs. Hoover’s classes celebrated immigration into the United States by exploring and learning about new cultures. Each student selected a country to research and spent several days learning about that country’s culture, geography, industry, customs, and contributions to American culture. A key component of the research was an interview each student conducted with a friend, acquaintance, or family member who shared the story of how they, or their ancestors, arrived in the United States. To give their presentations, many students dressed in authentic clothing from their country of choice and brought ethnic cuisine to share with their classmates. According to Mrs. Hoover, “From their research and our study, students gain an appreciation for America and the blessings we have as citizens.”
