New Cell Phone Rules, Morning Snack Break for 6th-12th Graders

Bell to Bell, No Cell — This is the new rule on cell phone use by 6th to 12th grade students during the school day.  Students will be able to use their cell phones during the breaks between classes and during lunch, but will not be allowed on their phones during class. Cell phones can be a serious distraction in the classroom and negatively impact learning. Our goal with this new rule is to help our students reach their full learning potential in the classroom.
Snack Break — ACS is adding a new “Snack Break”  for 6th-12th grade students from 10:08 to 10:18 am. The daily morning break will give our Upper School students a chance to fuel up with a healthy snack, take a mental break to recharge, and then return to class with renewed energy and focus.

Teachers, Staff Prepare Classrooms, Attend Workshop Sessions for New Year

ACS teachers have been working hard this past week preparing their classrooms to be a warm, loving, and welcoming place for their students.  From Monday to Wednesday, teachers and staff attended in-service training and workshops where they had an opportunity to get acquainted, review school policies and procedures, and focus on this year’s spiritual development theme — “All In” — based on Mark 12:30. On Monday, Chief School Administrator Karen Oblen introduced members of the Board of Directors (pictured above left), who provided breakfast that morning, and welcomed and introduced the 13 new employees who have joined the ACS faculty/staff this year (pictured below).

Each in-service session began with worship and devotions. Business Administrator Kelly Flynn, Development Assistant and faculty member Lee Martin, and Facilities Director Bill Smallwood provided inspiration and encouragement through prayer and worship. Middle school and high school teachers received two days of hands-on training on using Chromebooks in the classroom, in preparation for a new Chromebook educational initiative this year. Event Coordinator Jessica Martin oversaw the preparation of healthy breakfasts and lunches.  We’re ready for an exciting year of growing and learning.

ACS High School Students Featured Guests on Local WEHA FM Radio Show

High school students Ashleigh Martin, Lola Oguntuase, Sydney Pearson, and Ryan Lomangino were live on the air as the featured guests on Saturday, August 18 on WEHA  88.7/100.3 FM with Jared Thomas, host of “The Real CCM101” radio show. ACS at Summer Community Events — Nat’l Night Out, SJN Business Expo

ACS staff and our Cougar mascot talked with students and parents about the benefits of a Christian education at the August 7 National Night Out events in Egg Harbor Township, Galloway, and Mays Landing. It was great to see friends of ACS and even some alumni parents who stopped by the ACS tables to say hello, including Pastor Al and Evelyn Syvertsen from Beacon Evangelical Free Church and Pastor Sean Griffith and Amy Culleny from Sojourn Community Church and Sojourn Productions.

ACS joined the South Jersey Network this summer and made new connections with the local business community at the SJN Business Expo on August 28 at the Greate Bay Country Club in Somers Point. Admissions Director Heidi Sray and Development and Communications Director Carole Karabashian had the opportunity to promote ACS to over 600 people who attended the Expo.

Early Ed, Cougar Camp Wrap Up Fun-Filled Summer

The ACS campus was buzzing with activity all summer long as over 100 children from Early Ed to the sixth grade attended our popular, award-winning Early Ed and summer Cougar Camp programs. Cougar Camp Director Dara Kimmerly put together a fun-filled schedule of weekly themed activities. Campers enjoyed field trips to Young’s Skating Center, the Atlantic City Aquarium, the Funny Farm Rescue, and much more. The campers also looked forward each week to spending a day at the lake at nearby Sleepy Hollow Family Campground. Early Education Director and Elementary Principal Gail Alford oversaw the Early Ed summer program.

The summer programs concluded on August 24, with campers performing songs and scripture learned during daily Bible and worship time at a closing program in the gym for family members and friends. Then it was one final afternoon of fun that included enjoying the Big Kahuna water slide and having dessert served up by Paige’s Italian Water Ice. Congratulations to our camp directors and camp counselors for a memorable summer.

ACS Hosts Successful Summer Red Cross Blood Drive

Thank you to everyone who donated blood at our American Cross Blood Drive on August 2 and helped make the event a success. One unit/pint of blood can help save 3 lives. Our blood drive collected 26 units of blood — which will touch the lives of 78 area hospital patients. We plan to hold another blood drive in January 2019.  Look for more details that will be posted in the “Cougar Current,” on our school website, and on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

9th Graders Create Roller Coaster Replicas

Students in Miss Stonelake’s 9th grade physical science class designed and built model roller coasters as part of a class project that they presented to their fellow students June 6-8. The roller coasters pictured here were created by Hannah Urbaczewski and Beca Kimmerley (“Loot Liama,” top left); JJ Jacoby and Dan Sheldon (“Super Bowl 52,” top right, JJ with Miss Stonelake), Shelby Einwechter (“Ohana,” bottom left), and Haoshen “Katherine” Kong (“Jurassic Park,” bottom right). The students were required to name and decorate their coasters and  include hills, loops, and a vehicle that could travel through the entire coaster without stopping. The assignment helped students apply what they had learned about energy conversion, friction, and the law of conservation of energy.

ACS Hosts Annual Thank-You Lunch For Staff, Volunteers

ACS recognized and thanked volunteers, faculty, and staff for their commitment and service over the past school year at our school’s annual Thank-You Lunch on Tuesday, June 12 in the Multi-Purpose Room. Chief School Administrator Karen Oblen said that over the past year ACS was blessed to have more than 60 parents, grandparents, and friends in the community give generously of their time and talents as volunteers. Some of the volunteers who attended the luncheon (pictured above) served in the lunch room, on the Parent Teacher Fellowship board, with our Fellowship of Christian Athletes huddle, selling concessions in the Cougar Den, and on the Legacy Gala Committee.

ACS also gave a warm send-off to eleven faculty/staff members who are leaving ACS to pursue other endeavors, several moving out of the area, and two taking new positions as pastors. “We love you and want you to know how much we appreciate all you have sacrificed to do God’s work here at ACS,” said Oblen, who presented the departing employees with personalized ACS sweat-shirts as one of their parting gifts. Oblen also gave special recognition to preschool teacher Karan Erlandson, who is retiring after 15 years of service. Earlier that day during the Early Education Promotion Program, Early and Elementary Education Director Gail Alford (pictured at right) also thanked and recognized Erlandson for “how she poured the love of Jesus into each of her students.”

The faculty/staff members to whom we say “farewell ’til we meet again” pictured below are: First row, from left — Upper School Vice Principal and High School history teacher Gregg Laskow; Spanish teacher Anne Dice; PreK2 teacher Ciara Altieri; PreK 2A  teacher Joelle Howard; Middle School  teacher Casey Hopwood; Middle School teacher Deanna Bailey; Band Director Shirlene Perini; and PreK3A teacher Karan Erlanson; Second row, from left: High School Bible teacher Charlie Moore; Computer teacher Matt McKinnon.  Also not returning  is High School Language Arts teacher Ariel Richvalsky, who missed the group photo, but arrived later with her newborn baby boy Everett. Ariel, with Everett, her 2-year-old daughter Eden, and husband Tim Richvalsky, an ACS alumnus (’03), are pictured below left.  Faculty member Laskow and his wife Caitlin, a former ACS faculty member, also recently welcomed a new addition to the family in May, son Hudson, who joins 2-year-old sister Madison (pictured below right).

3B Class Proud Authors of Original, Published Book on Super Heroes

“The Fantastic 20 Super Heroes of 3B” — that’s the title of a new, published book written and illustrated by the 20 students in Mrs. McCarthy’s 3rd grade class. This week, the students received their personal copies of the 48-page, bound book, published by Student Treasures Publishing. The book was the result  of a month-long language arts class project in May and features stories and drawings by each student about a new and unique Super Hero of their own creation, with cover artwork drawn by Kaylee Tardif. One student, Ashlee Alford, created “Stuffy Girl,” who has the super power to make stuffed animals to give to sick children in the hospital. Another student, Owen Farrell, created “Morph Man” who has the power to morph into a cheetah to help the police catch a bad guy. “The students had to describe how their hero’s super power would help our community and our school,” said Mrs. McCarthy.  The students also had to hand write their stories using their best cursive writing skills and incorporate similes, metaphors, and other literary devices they have learned over the course of the school year. “The students did an awesome job and they are so proud of the book that many families have purchased extra copies as a keepsake and to give as gifts,” McCarthy said.

High School, Middle School Students Receive Recognition for Athletic Participation

High school and middle school students who played on an ACS sports team during the 2017-2018 school year received recognition for their participation, leadership, and athletic abilities at awards programs on June 1 and 4.

At the high school awards event, it was a time to celebrate and reflect on a year of outstanding accomplishments.  Both the ACS varsity boys’ and girls’ teams brought home league championship trophies in two sports, the varsity girls in soccer and basketball and the varsity boys in basketball and baseball.  The ACS girls’ and boys’ teams also took first place in the TSCAC track meet. In addition, a number of athletes put their names in the ACS record book and were recognized by the Tri-State Christian Athletic Conference for their outstanding individual accomplishments.

Abigail Vogel received the Cougar Award, given to a senior who has demonstrated outstanding Christian character, leadership, responsibility, and commitment in the area of athletics. Abigail and junior Solomon Griffith were also chosen by the Athletic Department to be the recipients of the 2018 Billy Robinson Award that recognizes one high school boy and girl athlete for significant achievement, Christian testimony, and athletic ability.  Abigail, who was a valued member of the varsity soccer, basketball, and softball programs all four years of her high school career, will be attending Atlantic Cape Community College to earn an associate’s degree in child development. Solomon is a pitcher/shortstop on ACS Varsity Baseball team, which has won three consecutive league championships, and he recently got his 100th hit of his high school career. At the middle school sports awards program, students who participated in soccer, basketball, baseball, softball, and cheer were recognized and honored. Athletic Director Pam Hitchner thanked the coaches and players for their dedication and commitment and noted that this was the first year in school history that all the middle school teams had winning records. In particular, the members of the MS Softball team received special recognition and medals for being the first undefeated middle school softball team in school history.
The MS Boys’ Basketball and Soccer teams also had outstanding seasons, with the Boys’ Basketball team going 21-2 and Boys’ Soccer posting a record of 8-1-3. The boys’ soccer team was undefeated in the competitive Atlantic Cape Junior High Athletic League’s Division 3 and just missed coming in first due to one tie near the end of the season. Hitchner noted that their defense was hard to beat and became known as the “Green Gate.” The middle school boys’ and girls’ track teams also came in first place in the TSCAC track meet. The head coaches recognized for their efforts to teach the fundamental skills and good sportsmanship were: soccer — Casey Hopwood, Ricardo Leon; basketball –Carly Witherow, Matt Glancey; baseball — Rob Barberio; softball — Mike Bohs; cheer — Morgan Gibson. They finished in 3rd place in the league, after going undefeated in the regular season.

Congratulations, Class of 2018!

Twenty-three seniors took center stage in the school’s gymnasium on June 6 to receive their diplomas from Chief School Administrator Karen Oblen and Board of Directors’ Chair Doug Pearson and to thank their teachers and family members for their guidance and support. As a gesture of their gratitude, the graduates stepped out into the audience during the ceremony to presents their parents and guardians with long stemmed roses.

Alumnus Tony Polcini (’89) opened the program by sharing a few memories from his years at ACS and advised the graduates to put their God-given gifts and abilities to good use. “God will place so many opportunities before you; love them and embrace them as ACS has loved and embraced each one of you,” Polcini said.

Valedictorian Luke Mouliert, 18, of Egg Harbor Township, (on right in photo) thanked parents and teachers for helping each of the graduates succeed academically and for providing a strong spiritual foundation.  He challenged his classmates “not to forget what we’ve learned and to always strive to do what is right, good, and honorable in every situation, no matter how difficult.” Mouliert will be attending Atlantic Cape Community College in the fall and is undeclared.

Salutatorian Steven Chirinos, 18, of Egg Harbor Township (on left in photo) reflected on the strong friendships he has made, favorite memories like the senior trip to Disney World, and the impact that ACS teachers have made. He gave a special thank you to calculus teacher, Mrs. Spiker,  for her “love and dedication to teaching.” Chirinos was one of 7 students in the class who had attended ACS since kindergarten. “It is my hope that we can all look back at our years at ACS and have no regrets, that we can look back and see why God placed us here and how ACS helped us grow closer to Him,” Chirinos said. Chirinos will be attending Rowan University, where he is the recipient of the Merit Scholarship and will be majoring in computer science.

Commencement keynote speaker and high school Bible teacher Charlie Moore opened his remarks with an original twist, playing the guitar and singing a humorous, satirical song that he wrote incorporating favorite memories with the graduates. He followed up in his remarks pointing out that the single most important memory that each of the graduates should take with them is their knowledge of the gospel and the saving work of Jesus Christ. “If you remember nothing else from high school, remember that Jesus Christ can give you the power to get through every single day,” Moore said. He also emphasized the importance of making wise choices as they move on to college, some in the local region and others to California, Oregon, Washington, and Japan. “Wherever you go, the new friendships that you make will have a great influence on you,” Moore said. “I urge you to surround yourself with friends who prize Jesus Christ above all else.”

The High School Select Ensemble, featuring senior Naomi Glancey as soloist, performed “I Will Follow” by Chris Tomlin.  Other graduates who participated in the program were school chaplain Mariyah Black and Tommy Taylor. Black, who gave the Christian character address, will be majoring in Bible and Women in Christian Ministry at Lancaster Bible College and is the recipient of the Charger Grant, Superior Academic Scholarship, and Assembly of God Church Scholarship. Taylor, who received a scholarship to study elementary education and film at Stockton University, gave the closing benediction.  A photo gallery of commencement 2018 can be found on the ACS website and also online at Pressofac.com.
